I've known better! Sucralose, Aspartame, Splenda, Nutrasweet, Equal, all made me sick before..it is a Neurological toxin for many. I was too excited to find desserts, and used just a tiny amount, all totaled. After just a few days I noticed a red rash on my face, like cold weather chapped skin. Then I remembered why I stopped using any of it years ago.
I use Stevia now- a plant leaf, non chemically altered. **

Here is a list of Keto approved foods using this toxin:
-Sugar Free jello for cream cheese balls
-Root Beer 'Float' using diet pop + HWC
-Toriani sugar free flavored suryp- add to drinks, for cooking.

It may not visibly affect you, use caution anyway; we have too many GOOD, SAFE, REAL FOOD recipes to risk using this stuff.
-Chewing Gum- has both sugar & fake sweetener- absorbed under tongue instantly.

You can find endless youtube medical warnings about how this product was pushed thru in the 1980s, how bad is is for us, and it's in 10,000 products. FDA was right on this one, but overruled and ethically compromised by 'big lobby' interests.
ASPARTAME: dangers-side effects (three 10 min videos)

** "Stevia represents the best potential replacement for artificial sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame. Unlike many low-calorie sweeteners, stevioside is stable at high temperature and over a pH range of 3 -9." re: http://stevia-plant.com/stevia-plant-information

keywords: phenylalanine, MSG, formaldehyde, methanol, chlorinated hydrocarbon,
Also: Polyethelyene glycol- used in MIO flavors for water (People with certain medical problems, such as kidney disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), should only take polyethylene glycol 3350 under the direction of a healthcare provider. in Miralax, laxative powders etc)

Aspartame and some of the others give me a weird sort of tension headache and make me clench my jaw a lot. I avoid them like the plague. How bad are pure maple syrup and pure honey on a low carb plan?

It must vary by person. I use Equal and Sweet N Low daily and don't have problems with them.

It depends on how well it fits within your macros. If you're trying to keep under 20 total carbs, it's pretty hard.

Okay. I'm thinking about maybe putting a bit in my coffee on occasion.

I have used xylitol in the past, I'm pretty sure that's pure birch bark and in the 'safe' category. Apparently you have to check the packaging though because some brands add... yup, you guessed it... sugar!

Health-wise, I don't have issues with any of them, but taste-wise, I can definitely spot the difference, and I like aspertame the least of them all. It's kind of funny, the list of individual ingredients that either cause me to retain water, have GERD, get a blockage, add inflammation, or trigger a rash is huge, and none of them are on it.

I've noticed this as well. Tension headaches and, yes, jaw clenching with aspartame. Haven't noticed it with the others, but I don't use them much, except stevia.

    Good info!

I avoid the artificial stuff too, and take the carb hit from grade b maple or raw honey if I need to add a sweetener to something. Happily I can say that I have FINALLY grown used to my BPC without any sweetener. :)

I can use any AFs with no problem and often use them if i bake with almond flour or something, but daughter gets a bad headache from any AF but stevia. So we adjust what we make or eat for her but I dont count stevia as an AF as most of what we use i grew myself.

I agree that everybody is different and it is a blessing for those folks who do have a negative reaction, that you can identify the source and remove it.

Hi, So You really mean: No health effects ON ME that I am aware of. (you are aware of hers)

STEVIA is a natural sweetener-- from a leaf, as you know...it is a no calorie substitute for sugar, it DOESN'T count as Artificial at all. The fact your daughter is effected to that degree means it is NOT safe for her. It is a neurotoxin for many. I wanted to be responsible and not promote Splenda/Aspartame in recipes I shared specifically to protect those like your child.

I'm not here to preach…"Honor Nutritional Diversity" means people are free to choose.

correction: referring to Mistizoom who said "No health effects that I am aware of." referring obviously to just herself.

and Alliwan who chooses safe Stevia for her child..sorry! Not challenging you. o:)

too many quotes of quotes >:)

No need to "correct" what I posted. I think it was pretty obvious what I meant. If you wish for clarification in the future, just ask.

You said you are a proponent of "Nutritional Diversity" regarding low carb eating, but to be honest it does not appear so based on this thread.

HI Mistizoom… :'( there is no fight here! I've already written to you privately on this subject and apologized.. And I was correcting ME for putting 2 different people's comments in one, and also clarifying that "you -Mistizoom-obviously were referring to yourself. "
The topic has swayed from my concern over endangering others….. i.e. see
Headline: Apologies... and saying in it: "It may not visibly affect you, use caution …."
However, I stand by my warning of sucralose/aspartame as not safe for humans long and short term.
    http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/fraud.htm
-quote: It has also been indicated that women with an intolerance for phenylalinine, one of the components of aspartame, may give birth to infants with as much as a 15% drop in intelligence level if they habitually consume products containing this dangerous substance.)
--Complaints about aspartame represent 80-85% of all food complaints registered with the FDA.

Dieters seeking to avoid sugar usually consume this product long term and in quantity.
Now I will shut up on this subject.

I'm not too worried about injesting anything once a month or less, but I've removed all sweeteners from my food except Stevia and Swerve (about 1/2 t daily). I found that removing all diet 'foods' that I was able to eat in general low carb, did not allow me to lose weight, and staying away from them completely has helped start some weight loss. Finally.

I use Sweet Leaf liquid stevia at home, the occasional Splenda packet when out and make myself sugar-free jello plus cream cheese. I have no issues with any of these things.

I also drink diet soda occasionally (less than once a week?)
