Weight Loss Surgery and it's effect on Diabetes

Many of us have been diagnosed with diabetes. I was first diagnosed about 4 years ago. I had gained weight over the years and had a poor diet of processed carbs, junk food and sugar which let to the elevated blood sugar levels. I started taking prescriptions to control it and increased the dosage a few times.

I've read many studies that show that bariatric patient's a1c levels drop significantly. Not only after they lose a significant amount of weight but sometimes just a few months after surgery. Personally, my a1c dropped from 7.8 to 6.2 in the two months prior to my surgery when I lost weight in the lead up. Cutting out the bad carbs (for the most part), eating less and exercising more seemed to have a dramatic effect on the number. So much so my doctor cut my dosage in half (and cut out one pill all together). I'm hoping to get that number in the normal range soon so I can be off the meds entirely.

How has weight loss surgery affected your diabetes? Have you cut down on medications or eliminated them? For those who are many months/years post op have you been able to keep your blood sugar levels low?

I had my surgery on March 9th and my doctor has taken me off my Metformin, and my other medications, for now because my numbers have all been so good without it while I am recovering. She wants to do blood work in June where we will see where my hba1c levels are at that time. Hoping I will not have to take any of my medications again. In addition to the Metformin I take meds for blood pressure and cholesterol.

I have had hypercholesterolemia for 40+ years without medications in the low 400's. I was talking metformin 2000 mg a day and two different blood pressure pills.
At my two week follow up I dropped the metformin, and one of the BP pills.
Now at 8 months out I have dropped all of the BP pills. My cholesterol medications are the same but for the first time I'm under 200 at 136

VSG on 8th of November 2014 with some 160 mg/dL after pre-surgical regime. Before that I was in the 200 mg/dL area while taking Exenatide shots (first daily Byetta then weekly Bydureon).
On 10th Nov 2014 I was released home with 137 mg/dL ; on 11th Nov I had 123 mg/dL and from 12th Nov I am stable at 90+/-5 mg/dL on emty stomach and 105+/-5 mg/dL after eating with no medication.
My GP and diabetes specialist are very happy with the evolution , and so am I !!!

I haven't had a new A1C in awhile, my post op was 5.4 though - my diabetes was pretty controlled. Although I went from 110-115 fasting to 90-95 fasting.
