Mechanisms of Insulin Resistance

For the biochemistry geeks in the house:
Tissue-specific insulin signaling, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.
The pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome remains debated. However, initiation of the typical
case of metabolic syndrome is due to a degree of genetic predisposition created by multiple
genes coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and a diet containing excess calories. A positive
energy balance leads to increased storage of fat in adipose tissue but with development of
obesity, the ability of adipocytes to store triglycerides is impaired or exceeded.
Consequently, fat is stored in other cell types, including in liver and skeletal muscle [3].
There are some interesting proposed mechanisms and some evidence with mouse models.
Worth a read for the pictures alone.

Dan, I hope those aren't your arteries.
If you can get through the obtuse language, this paper is a goldmine. The picture is much more nuanced than, say, Gary Taubes presents it. Carbs are not even mentioned as a factor. IR acts in many different ways on different parts of the body.0
