I Walked Up My Hill Today!

I went out to my 2.5 acre property today. It is very long (about 500 feet to the river) and it is a hill side that leads to the Clinton River, in Shelby Township, MI. From the top of the property to the river is about a 60 foot drop. Here is a pic I took today, from the top looking down: (the white stuff is snow):

The last time I walked to the river was before I started the Keto Diet, last August. I weighed 314 lbs. I could always walk downhill pretty easily. It was coming back that was a bear. I would have to stop about 3/4 of the way up (or I would of had a heart attack!) :( and there was a stump I could sit on and rest for five minutes, then make it to the top, huffing and puffing.

Today, I wondered how I would fare. So I walked to the river, walked around and proceeded to walk all the way to the top, without stopping AND when I got to the very top, I was about the same tiredness as pre-keto. I felt like a Million Bucks! YAHOOO! :D And wait, there's more! My left sciatic hip and right water-on-the-knee didn't hurt! (maybe tomorrow it will, but it’s still good now 5 hours later).

So maybe there's hope for me after all. The first step, in my health path, is to lose the weight. I have lost about 72 lbs. I still have 52 lbs. to go. The second step is to get back my fitness. I am basically near-atrophied muscled ~ from my (2) desk jobs. I quit my first job and my last day there was yesterday. I start my new job Monday. I won't be working two jobs anymore (13 hrs @ day). I will have free evenings!!!!

Unfortunately, I hate to exercise. I am now contemplating ways to exercise and it be fun. Fitness clubs and swimming are not an option for me. I do have a bicycle, but its still too cold to go out. My bike is about 10 years old and it has maybe 10 miles on it. Pre-keto I hated it, because the seat (and my 314 lbs+ weight) would try to make a eunuch out of me. I purchased a different seat. But I don't think it will be as bad now ~ since I lost the weight.

I thank everyone for helping get to where I am today. I especially thank God for all that he has done for me in helping find this WOE and finding YOU....

I hope you benefit from my experience....

So happy for you! I too hate to exercise. Mostly because I don't want anybody to see me.

That looks beautiful Dan ! There's nothing like a walk outdoors to get some healthy exercise and to commune with nature. I know how hard it is to even think about beginning to exercise, but once you get going, I bet you may find that you miss it if you don't do it.

I'm starting out slowly, with walking on the treadmill at home everyday, or at least 6 out of 7 days per week. It all adds up and it gets easier as you go along.

You can do it too ! Why wait for all the weight to come off before you start ? It may help you lose the rest of the weight more quickly if you start right now, within your physical capabilities of course. If I can do it, so can you !

I wrote a reply to this. It turned into an essay / personal diary entry!! I scrapped it.

Your walk looks gorgeous. If I'm ever in that part of the world call on me as a walking partner.

And awesome job on your walk today!!

Yay! Your place looks gorgeous...apparently I'm missing things like "trees" and "fresh air" and "outdoors" again.

The cool part about the property is that it in the middle of a big suburb. Its connected to a state nature park that is about 3000 acres. So when you're down near the river, you can turn 360 around and see no man made structures. Its like you're out in the countryside.

The bad part is the mosquitos will carry you away and suck all the blood out of you! I have a control plan for that, if ever build my house on the property.

Dude...I hate to be the one to tell you this, but what you did today was (ssssssshhhhhhhh...not too loudly), EXERCISE!!! lol

Don't overthink this physical movement stuff. Just walking your property, taking in the beauty you're surrounded by...that is the dreaded "e" word. Doing a few leg lifts while sitting at your desk at work...that's not just getting the circulation going, that's movement that counts toward "e." Doing a little jig in front of the stove while your radishes are frying...yes sirree, there's "e" again. There are so many ways to challenge a muscle or get your heart rate up just a little bit just while participating in life every single day that I don't really believe a "structured" routine is all that necessary. If you're cognizant of the opportunities to move your body in a way that's not your norm, those efforts make a difference.

Oh, Dan. That's beautiful scenery and that's an amazing achievement. Go you!

I dislike exercise also. I'm trying to do things like gardening, walks with the hubby and swimming while it's still warm. :)

Both the photos and your story are super inspiring, Dan.

Can i just suggest, for people who hate exercise, that you try boxing? Not kick boxing or cardio boxing or any of those newfangled notions. Real boxing boxing. Tons of fun, easy on the joints and a great work out in every way.

Great job! There are some massive hills where I live too and I'm hoping to get better at climbing them this year.

That looks absolutely beautiful ! I want to go there too, lets all have a picnic there ! This looks like a beautiful peaceful place to build a cabin. You have it all, trees, hills and the river, a beautiful place for reflection and rejuvenation.

I find trees and water to be especially uplifting. Right now I am still walking inside on my treadmill. But soon when the weather co-operates a little more, I will walk along the river very near my house, to a couple of parks where I will be surrounded by trees and have the opportunity to sit by the river and watch the wildlife and nature around me. I can hardly wait. My park is not as wild as yours looks however, but still a welcome break from city life.

    Enjoy your paradise !

Great job. I have about the same hill slope and length down to the state highway but it is paved. I now can walk down and back with a quick step but not a year ago without resting. I do it at least once daily if it is free of ice/snow. Keep up your good success.

Hey Dan... Any fish in hat stream? Might be a great way to catch some protein and get some E too.
