If you really love data, take a look at the Premium service. So much data for so little money ...

With the Premium you can add things you'd like to track, it sets up a "training program" to keep you moving forward, but most importantly for me I can download all the data into a csv or excel sheet.
I can then parse out the noise and bring the info to my doctor. I can SHOW him thta I eat x calories, x carbs and my glucose is x, without bouncing through screens on my phone.

They do have a 7 day free trial for Premium.

  • I want to buy a fitbit device, need some advise as to how suitable this product will be. An wether it will meet my needs. I play football at semi pro level and want data when i train and when i play matches. Is there anybody else use fitbit for these purposes that can give me some feedback on how good product is and also which device would be most suitable?? Thank you in advance lol

I'd suggest first consideration being location.
On hip or on wrist - which is most likely to be damaged and make it worthless?

Outside that, the calorie burn will likely be off by some amount, because it's basing calorie burn on steps and distance with your entered weight - but your outfit weighs how much more?
That means you'll actually be burning more - that'll be hard to correct if at all.

Outside that, I'd think the step based calorie burn method actually would work well, sadly that weight issue.

It was worth it for me. Less than I was paying for BodyMedia, and as a numbers geek, what I get is worth the price.

Edit: Feel free to add me on either Fitbit at https://www.fitbit.com/user/382QNM or MFP (or both).

They're pretty intuitive—just go ahead & start one. In the iOS app, it's the 2nd tab at the bottom of the screen.

Outside that, I'd think the step based calorie burn method actually would work well, sadly that weight issue.

For what it's worth, I've found that the steps are over-estimated and the calories burn under-estimated (on Fitbit Charge HR) versus the BodyMedia Link that I've used for the last couple of years.

That being said, either one is better than me trying to estimate what I burn in my daily life, which is, sadly, not too active these days. I still use a heart rate monitor for actual cardio work, but the Fitbit Charge HR has really helped motivate me in more daily routines, even more than the BodyMedia Link.

If you're looking for specific data on training and matches, a good heart rate monitor may be a better investment. If it's for overall activity levels and calorie burn, so far the Fitbit Charge HR is working for me.

  • My Husband just surprised me with a fitbit charge HR today as a get well gift from surgery. It'll be a few days or so before I get to make good use of it but I'm ready to burn it up. Looking for some support, anyone feel free to add me.

I got my husband (and me!) a set of Fitbits for his birthday today. He is trim and fit, golfs when the weather is good, is active, eats all the wrong stuff, but is in great control of his eating habits. I am overweight, walks the dogs some, does housework, tries to eat healthy but it's hard when faced with hubby's food preferences, and am a grazer when it comes to food. I recently retired and "recovering" from a long-time desk job. I have some knee and foot issues that hold me back but am eager to shed some weight and get healthier. I weigh more than I ever have, and hate it. Looking forward to making some contacts here and a healthier year to come!
