Really frustrated...

I am really frustrated. I am on a 1500 calorie a day 45 g per meal diet. My weight is steady and I have a healthy BMI. I am diabetic, and recently was put on pure insulin for controlling my blood sugar. I am having trouble with my sugars post meal lately. I am upset I seem to be needing more insulin as weeks go by, too. I am trying to get insurance approval to see a CDE. Anyone else have these issues?

What does your doctor say? Does "trouble" mean high or low? there are a lot of different diabetes medications available today depending on what the problem is.

So, trouble is either. I am running highs now. I am just very frustrated. Due to my health and planning to become pregnant, my only option is just insulin injections that are approved for that use.

When you say 45g per meal I presume you mean 45g of carbohydrates. If that is correct and you are having trouble controlling your blood sugars then the most obvious thing to do would to consider reducing your level of carbs. A number of diabetics have had success using a Low Carb High Fat approach to eating. Have a look at the Low Carber Forum - The LCD Group and follow the link in the announcement section. A good source of information would be Bloodsugar 101 by Jenny Rhul which is an excellent primer for people newly diagnosed as diabetic. You may feel more at peace by talking to your Dr about the LCHF approach. By following up on the info sources quoted you will at least be in an informed position.

I am on an insulin pump so what I am writing needs to be taken with a grain of salt. My A1C labs for the past 7 years have all been in the 6.5 - 7.3 range (only 3 labs at 7.0 & above). I have, for all these years used approximately 90 units/day of Humolog. Since starting here at MFP on 12/27/14, I have done regular exercise on a bike. Currently, my 31 day average of insulin usage is 36.05 units/day of which 31.45units are programmed for the pump to deliver throughout the day. That means I am only using 4.6 units in response to what I eat. My revelation is the exercising is blasting away at the carbs as I am averaging over 200 grams of carbs/day. I'm on the pump as I produce so little insulin I would otherwise be considered T1. My point, in a very round about way, is maybe if you were able to do some type of exercise about 60 - 90 minutes after eating you could control the BS spikes. I know if you're working you may only be able to do this after your evening meal; but, that may be enough. That's generally when I do my exercise.

Thanks. I have gone back to eating simpler foods, and have been doing better. About ultra low carb, I was told that was not medically my best option. I do need to have balanced food intake. I just started on levemir as my long acting and have been increasing the dose under my doctor's care. I am hyper-sensitive to insulin, so only use a little. I do need short acting, too. I try to get exercise, but have been warned to not do anything strenuous due to health. So, it has been mostly walking. Which, I try everyday. I am hoping to get better enough to get back to Zumba and other fitness classes. My issue is to process anything, I need a shot... So, even low carb, I would need a shot.
