We all have some internal dialogue going on during the swim. C'mon let's hear it! How does your internal dialogue go? :smirk:
This is where to share it...

Stay long. Head down. Reach, damnit! Slow that kick. No, don't stop kicking. Kick from the hip. Tuck your tail. You forgot about your head. Those kids on the swim team are trying to kill me. Seriously, 30 kids doing butterfly right now? God I wish I could breathe on the other side. Gotta work that in soon. HEAD DOWN!!! Is there an end to this pool? Don't speed up. Stay relaxed. There you go. Just like that. Now, do it again. Go. (Remember your head...)

    Speed set:

I hate this I hate this I hate this This is how I get faster This is how I get faster I hate this I hate this I hate this Every third [breathing] every third Wall! Breathe! There are no walls in triathlons Don't breathe off the wall But why not there are no walls in triathlons I hate this I hate this This is how I get faster God my arms If I puke on the deck I can log it as "vigorous" right I hate this Wall! Yes! Really, clock?

    IMs:

HIPS hips HIPS hips HIPS hips HIPS hips HIPS hips
God it feels good to breathe. It feels so good to breathe.
Keep up the pace don't slack off push hard keep it up dive dive dive don't slack.
Do I really have to do another lap of fly after this?

    Distance set:

Sixteen. Sixteen. Sixteen. Sixteen. Sixteen. SEASONS DON'T FEAR THE REAPER, NOR DO--Brain, double-u-tee-eff, mate? THAT'S WHY THEY CALL ME MR. FAHRENHEIT--Sixteen--ROMEO AND JULIET ARE TOGETHER FOR ETERNITY ROMEO AND--Sixteen. No. Wait. I'm swimming the other direction. It's an odd number. Seventeen? Or nineteen? Or actually fifteen? Dangit, call it fifteen. I'M A ROCKET SHIP ON MY WAY TO MARS--Fifteen. Fifteen. Sixteen.

When I'm just going for distance or when I am concentrating on form?

When I'm concentrating on form, very much like @‌cheshirecatastrophe.

When I'm just going for distance, my mind roams free. I'll sing to myself, chew on an idea for an article I want to write, analyze a problem for work, make notes about what I need to work on with my husband who is going to be a support kayaker for me this summer, imagine what the beach at Cape Gris Nez might feel like. Hey, a woman girl can dream. I really do find myself visualizing what a Channel swim might feel like to the point where I can sometimes smell diesel fuel when I swim.

Swimming is definitely my thinking time for the long sets. Probably why I come out of the pool all mellow.

Noel, Have you watched the movie "On A Clear Day"? It's about a guy who wants to do a Channel swim (fictional) for several different reasons. You might enjoy it :)

Oh this stroke rate is just way too high...breathe....relax...hands pulling back not down.....lap 4- lap 4 - lap 4 - just started and I'm already exhausted with 96 to go ... - oh dear ...I don't think I'll make it today ....maybe I just do half the usual?...Stop that...concentrate on finishing the next 20 then the next 20 after that... don't cross the mid point (head) with your arms ... You keep doing this when you're tired....lap 50 lap 50 lap 50... Here comes the wall...Looking at watch 30 min... Oh oh that is slow ...why? Is it just the stroke rate issue? Is it body position? Stretch and straight ... Horizontal in the water...don't drag your feet.... Kick from the hips......what lap was it? 56? 58? Oh dear I've lost count ...now can't fully rely on the accuracy of that time...try abit of the TI approach? Swimming downwards.... Lap 70 lap 70 lap 70....you're not rotating...rotate...rotate..rotate...Oh there's the guy in the green and white trunks - he's fast...haven't seen him in awhile...breathe ....pull...your falling behind the music..stroke rate dropping...don't fall behind the music....speed up...so hard...oh...The pool lights been switched off...oh sunlight...this pool is getting packed ....lap 80 lap 80 ...surely that guy cannot be swimming diagonally across the pool? Seriously???? Oh oh we going to collide? Humph! Breath...will I make it? Hands entry into water correct? Don't enter thumb first ... Breathe breathe breathe....oh oh did the battery on the music player just run out of charge? ....haven't charged it in 2 weeks...How will I keep up the stroke rate? Well it's just too bad...Breathe breathe, pull pull, ...don't kick too hard it's wearing you out...can't wait till I can do flip turns again....lap 84? lap 84? lap 84? Hang in there...there's a purpose to all this...I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me...breathe... Breathe...whew almost done...just 6 more laps to go...53 min?... Rotate, rotate, rotate, Push push push to the end....

Six, Six, Six, Six, Six, Six, Six. Oh crap! Here comes the wall and the seventh lap is a sprint. Flip, turn, kick, kick, kick. Sprint! Oh joy! Here comes the wall again. Bring it back down to pace for eight. Tacos al pastor sound good right about now. I could also really go for a roast beef sandwich. Did I do eight yet, or is this eight? This is eight. Or is it nine? Better to do an extra lap than to leave a lap out. I'd better call it eight. I'm passing the ripped guy trying to sprint his entire workout again. This fat guy can swim. Wonder if I'll beat my mile time? This feels like a fast pace, but I'm not sure. What lap is this? Ten or eleven? Tacos again. Tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos, tacos.

:agree: TACOS!!! These are all cracking me up. (However, as a new learner, I'm concerned about all of you experienced swimmers who get distracted to the point of forgetting how many laps you are doing! I can barely remember to grab my mail at the end of the day... Lucky for me, I don't swim enough continuous laps at this point to forget!)

Still, tacos on the brain for most of the workout. After swimming (which compared to most of you is barely a workout), I could eat a horse. Seriously...

Most of the time, stroke count. But sometimes my mind just wanders. Other times a design challenge will float through along with a solution that doesn't come sitting at my desk :)

I wanna SEE that level of skill. Can you imagine how fast she'd be if she'd put her head down... WOAH.

Mmmm that lady with her head up also laps me - her feet screw kick too, and she has her arms way too wide on the pull.

I know my technique looks better than hers... It is so annoying that she is still faster than me, (her and a bunch of others).

However, I also have internal dialogue that goes 'hah guy with the odd front crawl with fist hands and off rotation - beating you really easily now....yay. Woooosh, here I go past you again.'

Actually I am not really that competative - just neither of these people are friendly, no hello smiles or nods. And my internal dialogue clearly doesn't like it!

I'm usually singing along with my Ipod. If I am talking to myself, it is usually "long and lean, long and lean" or "dang it, can't that guy in the next lane learn to not splash so much?????"

Unless the one swimming instructor who is also training for the next Olympics is at the pool in his Speedo. Then it is more like, "yummy, why can't I be about 35 years younger????"

When I'm swimming a mile (1750 yards): (at 100 yards) I've only done 100 yards and I'm already tired. (At 200 yards) Ok, this is starting to get a little easier. I'm thirsty. Wish I had taken a sip of water before I started this. (At 500 yards) I'm halfway to 1000 and then it's only an additional 500 yards plus a small 250. Man, am I thirsty. (At 800 yards) I'm almost halfway there. I need to pee. (At 1000 yards) Only 750 more to go. That's less than 400 twice. (At 1200 yards) 550 left. Less than 10 minutes away.... or I could keep going and make it a 2000 yard swim. Yeah, let's keep going. (At 1750 yards) Only 250 to go before I hit 2000. Let's keep going. I don't need to pee bad enough to stop. (At 2000 yards) I've already done 2 x 1000. Why not make it 3 x 1000? That's only two 500s. I can do a 500 twice. (At 3000 yards) I'm only 600 yards shy of 2 miles. 600 yards is only 2 x 300 which is only 4 x 150. I can do a 150 four times. (At 3600 yards) I wonder why my neck is so sore.

Lap 4...Lap 4...Lap 4.....why do the first 15 or 20 lengths have to be so difficult? Will I survive the set today? Lap 8...Lap 8...Lap 8
Remember no bend in the elbows on entry....rotating...rotating.....15...15...15...lengthen that stroke, all the way to the back....so tiring...18...18...18...body falling out of position....hips and backside up, feet closer together.......30...30...30....is the left hand going in flat with dropped elbow, ...watch the left hand...left hand...left hand...
Oh someone else is in the pool now...40...40...40.......

"George R. R. Martin, please write, and write faster/You’re not going to get any younger, you know/Winter is coming, I’m growing impatient/And you’ve still got two more damn books left to go/So write, George, write like the wind!* I wonder if I swam the English Channel if that would help my resume at all? It might be a good marketing point if my husband and I start that computer training business. But how would we fit a bunch of laptops into a class B motorhome? Nope, stop crossing your hand across the midline. Pull straight back. Tighten up the legs a bit, that's a sloppy kick. George R. R. Martin, please write, and write faster/You’re not going to get any younger, you know I wonder if there's some nationwide gym that has a pool we could join. Hmm, if we do all fifty states, wouldn't it be fun to do an open water swim in each state? I think I need to start planning a date for that 2016 Alcatraz swim. And I wonder if because I am heavy if my body has a seal or turtle silhouette to shark? Stop thinking about sharks, you're in a damn pool. I wonder if Lake Mascoma would be a good place for an open water trial? George R. R. Martin, please write, and write faster/You’re not going to get any younger, you know Are there dangerous critters in local lakes? Stop thinking about dangerous critters in a damn pool, Noel, you're being dumb again. No, an orca doesn't FIT in the pool and neither does a big ole anaconda. Knock it off, seriously. What are you trying to do, psyche yourself out? George R. R. Martin, please write, and write faster/You’re not going to get any younger, you know

    * It turns out that song has the perfect beat to keep my stroke rate at my current appropriate training pace. (http://www.paulandstorm.com/lyrics/write-like-the-wind-george-r-r-martin/*

Another day of struggle? This can't be normal! I need to up my protein intake. 5-5-5 I need to up my proteins 15-15-15 boy do I need to up my proteins 27-27-27 Did I have any proteins today? Yes fried egg - 31-31-31. Any protein yesterday? - your legs are dropping - butt and legs up - 45-45-45 - too many hard swims lately- pain-pain-pain- hey even Lochte and Missy Franklin have their bad days -61-61-61 - maybe if the pool wasn't empty and I wasn't the only one, it would have been easier to keep motivated - 69-69-69 - this music just sounds faster than usual but that's impossible - 73-73-73 - I just can't keep up with the stroke rate today 75-75-75...

Same! Thus the reason I got the lap counter. Of course, then I managed to forget to hit the button and swam extra anyway!

Which lap counter did you get? I had a look at them but they all seemed really expensive. Reckon I could get away with a knitting row counter? Lol.
