i just purchased the surge and have it synced to myfitnesspal. Why does Fitbit say I burned 4,606 calories, but the exercise # on MFP is different. Any help would be great! Thanks

Hello there,
I'm in the same boat as you.
I recently received my fitbit and have just today set it up with MFP. I plan to start using it with MFP from tomorrow.
My understanding is that the calories burned as recorded in your fitbit would be reflected as a "Fitbit Calorie Adjustment" in the MFP app - you would see this at the bottom of the Diary under the "Cardio Exercise" section.
Maybe someone else can also help clarify but I'm pretty sure thats how it works... I hope!?0 -
First: read the FAQ in the stickies for the group. Lots of good info, including the difference between the calorie burn that Fitbit shows you and the Fitbit calorie adjustment that MFP shows. Basically, MFP takes the number of calories Fitbit says you've burned, compares it to how many calories MFP thinks you should have burned so far that day and takes the difference to get that adjustment.
Second: Don't pay any attention to the numbers on the first, partial day.
Third: Make sure you've enabled negative adjustments in MFP. That way, on a day when you are less active than expected, you'll know that you also need to eat less (or get moving enough to get that negative number to turn positive).0 -
Thank you Carpercia and NancyN795! That makes so much more sense! I'm new to calorie counting and have no idea what I'm doing!! Thank you so much!!!0

Well, if you're new to calorie counting here's another piece of advice...
To really know if your Fitbit is accurate for you, you need to log your food very accurately for at least a few weeks. That means weigh virtually everything using a good, digital scale (I don't weigh lettuce). I resisted doing this for a long time, but that is what it took to a) get me losing again and b) realize that my Fitbit is quite accurate.
You can't go by daily or even weekly weight changes. There are just too many variables that can throw those off.0 -
Wow. Thank you. Any information is greatly appreciated!

I've just started with a FitBit Flex which is linked to my Nuffield Health account. I do have a MFP account too but haven't used it for a while. What happens if you don't use MFP every day?0

Do you log your food on any of the apps you use? Fitbit has logging of food as well as MFP, but MFP seems to do a better job for most of us. If you log somewhere besides MFP, it shouldn't matter at all, as Fitbit and your other app if applicable, would take care of it.0
