Food Allergies and Intolerances

I wanted to share this link with everyone, as I did not realize many of my fatigue and other issues were likely caused by intolerances/allergies to foods, till recently. I want many years fluctuating between 130 lbs and 180+ lbs for seemingly no reason. At times my body hurt everywhere, I couldn't exercise without being in severe pain, if I could even find the energy. Other times I felt on top of the world, I'd lose weight for seemingly no reason and have more energy that I knew what to do with.
This last time I gained the weight and felt like heck I found an endocrinologist to really have my thyroid looked at as thyroid issues are common in my family and I had been diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid previously. It was that Dr that recommended lowering my carb intake as she had found my fasting BG to be in a pre diabetic level and suspects insulin resistance.
When I started lowering my carbs I began eliminating breads, and grains, as they took up a lot of carbs and calories, I got my carbs from other sources, veggies. After a few days I tried eating a whole wheat and flax pita, 20 minutes later my throat swelled up and the side of my face went numb. This same thing happens to my sister after she eats something with gluten after she has been gluten free for about 3 years as recommended for her IBS.
My older sister and her two children for the past 2-3 years have gone through hell trying to figure out what was going on with them. My niece and nephew have many times broken out in hives and gone into anyphylactic shock, as has my sister once she started eliminating certain foods and then reintroducing them.
The were eventually able to determine after many many doctors and specialists that they have MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome) its a rare disorder (or believed to be so at this point) and runs in families, so my other sister and I who have had problems, though not as severe are being tested for it.
I just wanted to put this information out there for those of you who feel sick after eating breads, or who have unexplained pain, etc. There are so many other symptoms to food intolerances that I don't think most people know about. I had no clue for years and years, till I started eliminating those items and evaluating how I felt after adding them back in to my diet.
This is only one source of information on this and it's more of a casual article, I can link more info if anyone is interested.

Wow! I haven't had time to read the article but your post is really interesting, thank you. I feel exhausted after eating bread. I was such a bread addict for too many years so I wouldn't be surprised if I'd given myself an intolerance.0

Thank you for sharing. I have had unexplained rashes since I was 15. I am now 44. I also have had pretty severe allergies most of my life. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with low thyroid production and had to start taking synthroid. I have reduced my carbs to 50 or below about a month and a half ago and I have not had one rash or any allergy attacks since. I went for lab work before starting to reduce my carbs and eat more fat. I go back next month for a follow up. I am very eager to see how my thyroid is responding. Your post is great because I know somebody else's body feels like it has been hijacked by what we eat and everybody here doesn't look at you like your crazy when you don't know why you are having a allergic reaction. I actually feel very hopeful with this way of eating.0

I'm happy you found it helpful. There are so many other reactions that indicate allergies or intolerances other than the normal sneezing runny nose. I hope that others can find relief by being aware that it might be what they are eating causing their discomfort.0
