Hi all, I am trying low carb for the first time but have no idea where to start!
I don't want to do go very very low so I am thinking of 50g to 80g of carbs a day. I have no idea what to aim for with protein and fat though! I am 5ft 6 and weigh 10st 11lb.
Todays meals I am planning / have eaten:
Breakfast - 2 egg omelette with grated half fat cheese (I know it should be full fat but the half fat is leftover from when I was doing weight watchers!)
Lunch: Cauliflower soup homemade - difficult to know the NV as made it and froze it ages ago
Snack: Taramasalata and peppers and cucumbers.
Dinner: Prawn salad with avocado
Any help gratefully received|!!!!

I think you're off to a great start. My advice is to keep it simple, cut the whites, ie. sugar, bread, pasta, milk and eat more healthy fats. If you read the intro-beginners guide above it really is easy to understand. You can tweak your macros as you go once you figure out how many carbs your body needs. As I am restarting, I'm keeping mine at 100, then I'll lower it in a few weeks and up the fat. I have a tablspoon coconut oil in my coffee with a bullet (bullet-proof coffee) to help with the fat and I will up that eventually since it can be hard to get over the omg fat in all the foods at first.
Good luck, start researching and have fun with all the foods. There is no wrong way to low carb and everyone has their own plan. Listen to your body.0 -
Thanks Katharine, good to hear! What's bullet proof coffee??? Mine does seem high in fats and not enough protein. Only 46g of protein and 73g of fat. Does that sound right?0

I'm 5'10 and my minimum protein is around 60g for being inactive. Plug your numbers into something like this: http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/
You don't have to do keto, but it'll give you a good idea for your protein and calories.
The way it gets your macros is generally:
Calories - protein - carbs = fat

What is this Taramasalata and is it delicious? I have never heard of it before.0 -
It's fish roe I think - very pink very fishy, not sure about carb content though.0

Wiki says it's normally blended with bread or potatoes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taramasalata0

The bullet proof coffee is just coffee and a tablespoon coconut oil in a blender like a magic-bullet or nitru-bullet which cost about 50$ but you could also use an immersion blender or regular blender, its just easier to clean the little ones.
If you Google it you will see there are many different recipes, some add butter, etc. but this is another case where keeping it simple works best for me.0 -
Hi all thanks for the replies. Taramasalata is a fish roe dip and the one I bought does contain wheat flour which I guess is the thickener. I had it left over from before I started but 50g only contained 4g of carbs and I love the stuff!
I have had 48g of carbs today and feel okay. I am a little peckish now and craving something sweet but will be okay.
I have had 46g of carbs, 78g of fat and 57g of protein today. I may have something low fat but high protein before bed as a snack. Ideas welcome!0
