Heart rate monitor

Does anyone else workout with a chest-strap heart rate monitor? I use one and it tells me that in about 35 minutes of elliptical training I burn about 600 calories. Grant it, I do hard core intervals and my heart rate usually stays at about 175 and gets up to 198 during sprint intervals, but it seems a little much, and I don't know if I should trust it.
If you do use a HR monitor do you trust what YOURS says about what you burn?

I have tried a bunch of monitors and they all seem a bit inconsistent. The best success I've had with logging calories burned is by only logging half of what my monitor thinks I burned. Currently I've switched to just always wearing the fitbit HR cbarge. Not quite as accurate but way more convent.
