This could be bad news for us...

When I saw that MFP had been sold, I thought the future is going to change, first it was the extra ads in the phone app and sure enough, there is now a premium service, and those paying members get first priority on any issues with customer service. Kindle users are already behind in the app, with no updates expected soon, 2011 was the last upgrade we got. So the free service will probably just continue to get worse and worse, while attention goes to the new Premium folks.

I might have to move over to fitbit.com entirely. At least their food database is USDA and not so many tweaked entries, along with the ability to scan labels, which was why I started on MFP in the first place. I had formally used sparkpeople.com but you couldn't scan labels, etc. I just can't see paying a monthly or yearly fee ($49.95) to log food and chat about weight loss, I had done that on ediets.com.

Hmmm... could be bad news, indeed, Joell - thanks for the update. You're right about the many "tweaked" entries but ... what I like about that is, if I can't find the accurate info according to the package in my hand, at least I can enter a new one with the correct info that I am seeing. I find USDA rather limited as a source of info.
I don't have a fitbit, either, so I think for fitbit folks that might be a good move. At least for now, I am hanging in here and waiting to see what happens. ~ Kathy0 -
I hadn't heard, but for now, I'll stay here. I don't have a Fitbit, so that's not an option. I was using FatSecret before I came to MFP and there are probably other free sites out there, too.0

Gramanana, I won't be leaving anytime soon. I did have a look around and Sparkpeople has been keeping up, you can connect to your devices now. Humm, didn't check on the app to see if barcode scanning has been added, will need to do that. I tried most of the weight loss sites at one point or another. MFP seems to fit my lifestyle the best, with apps for Apple and Android/Kindle devices. That is why I was so discouraged to see that news about a paid membership.0

That really is a shame, It always stinks when something that has gone so well, changes. I use Spark People for my Tracker Points, Jenny Craig for Food Entry. MFP has the most response of friends I have made here. I would hate to lose it0

This doesn't sound good. Although I have a Fitbit, I'm going to stick around here for as long as I can because I like it better. I guess it was too good to last forever, especially after it was sold.0

Well that doesn't sound good. I'm hanging in for now, but I have also noticed the mobile app isn't as responsive as it used to be. I used sparkpeople before and may go back if MFP continues to deteriorate. They make money on the ads, so if I was to pay for a membership I sure as heck don't want to see the ads!0

Just saw this, and decided to investigate a little. I'll be curious to see what the cost is; I've always wanted an option of an ad free app available for my phone. But the good news is 'MyFitnessPal’s core features will always be presented at no cost to our users. To provide our health and fitness tools for free, we place advertisements in various locations on our website and in our mobile apps.' per http://myfitnesspal.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/1935017-what-is-the-“ad-free”-feature-of-myfitnesspal-premium-
I *think* that the current app will still be available for Kindle, it's just that the premium won't work on it (yet) if you choose to upgrade. I'll have to log on with my Android phone and see if I'm one of the 'lucky' people they're offering the premium to, and see how much it is.0 -
I'm pretty sure I'll stick with mfp. I checked out many other sites, and not one has all the features, and some have such intrusive ads they're a misery to use. even the samsung and fitbit sites' food tracking didn't a candle.0

Oh ugh.
I am trying to check in every day, and although I don't participate that much on the discussion boards, I think the group support here is THE BEST. What person over 50 or 60 wants to compare themselves and their weight loss/ health journey to a 20 or 30 year old?

On my android phone, the ads are not too obnoxious. They show up as a banner across the bottom of the screen. I mostly just ignore them. Still like MFP a lot and plan to continue to use it.0

I have done spark people and WW online. I like this the best and love this group. I know I am not a daily consistent check in person, but I think I will do better as I get healthier. I had a LOT to deal with in the last couple of years healthwise but I feel as if a lot is behind me now! Time to move forward!0

I'll stay here...I only use it for this page and the support of you all.....works for me

I find you all to be so inspirational! I am starting to feel better than I have in a long time and I believe its the beginning of a roll!

Well I don't have any plans to leave here - because it's true, the support of this group is very special and I believe it is one of the main reasons I have made the progress I have ~ Kathy0

The ads for premier are already getting old. The site has no screenshots of the differences between the two services, free and paid. I checked out the Facebook page and they did have a few screen shots that really didn't show much either. They had a statement about the free service still getting upgraded, supported etc. Since it is 4 yrs. on, and they haven't upgraded the app for Amazon devices, I don't know if I believe them. It is pretty clear they are focusing on the new Apple Watch market.
They had a lot of feedback on the$9.99 pricing and how little was being offered, you still can not download your data like on the Fitbit site.
As I have this group and a three others I follow daily, I won't leave until it becomes upbearable. Then I will find a more user friendly site, set up a group and invite all my MFPals to join me there0 -
