What a fantastic weekend! Well, most of it. Caroline got sick today but she still said it was a wonderful time. We loved meeting everybody. And the conference is always extraordinary.
Kim, you look fabulous when I saw you… I'm not surprised you're having such success. Keep up the awesomeness! I hope you are home and resting...finally.
Heron: Arturo tells me you said very nice things about me. That I look to fit, I think? I have to say that I've been very bad about exercise but I've been eating mostly Whole30 and progress has been slow, but it still progress! Thanks for letting us have Arturo for the weekend! We all had a blast. We had to leave town earlier than expected today. Caroline had an epic migraine. She was vomiting on the way home, it was terrible. She's pretty sure it was the lack of sleep because we stayed up very late both nights, and ended up getting up very early both days. I'm sorry you guys suffer with such horrible pain.
Kelly, congratulations to you and your success as well. It seems you and Mark have really done some great things over the last couple of months!
John- it was so great to get to hang out with you for a few days! Tell Dan I said thanks again for coming. Awesome to meet him.
And Jennifer… Well, we just can't wait to see you in a couple of weeks!! Please don't be surprised if your pulled on to the course as a participant. (Hee heee...just kidding. Maybe.)
Well, one thing I know for sure is that it was amazing to hang out with people from this community. If you're thinking about coming to Las Vegas, don't hesitate! These guys know how to have a great time and it's really an interesting dynamic to be around everyone who kind of thinks the same way about food and all. Your virtual world and your real world collide for a little bit and it's an awesome thing!!!!!

Hello all! Glad to see everyone had a great time at paleofx!
Mark and I want to a night time 3 gun match last night and had a great time. So many great guys there and so helpful! Mark placed 10th and I came in 24th out of 25. (The last guy didn't finish lol). But I completed all my goals. I knew I would come in last but I was the only gal there and extremely new. But I didn't time out and was safe. Boy did we drag today lol!
I have a question for all of you. Where are good Paleo type places to eat in St. Paul? Mark is there for work starting tomorrow and finding great places can be difficult.
Will definitely post pictures of my Austin on his float Friday. It's the 1st and my busiest day but just can't miss him on his new adventure!

Kelly - Some of the General places you can eat Paleo on the Road are (no Bun/Lettuce wrap) Five Guys, Hardees / Carl Jr, Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steak House can be done by asking for what you want, and pretty much any sit down place will make some accommodation if you ask. It is really easier than most folks think, if you take the time to look at the options and ask to make them fit for you. That being said I am not a regular on the over nite road trips so some of the high mileage group may have a better answer.
Paleo Fx, Wow, what a great time! Happy to meet and hangout with such a great group of folks! My highlights are
1 meeting Carol, Kim, Caroline, Melina and Arturo.
2. The workshops, and panels were excellent. What a great way to find out where the research is taking some of our best minds.
3. The Accessibility of the 'Big Wigs' is great. I was able to meet and converse with Mark Sisson, Ben Greenfield, Robb Wolf, Jason Seib, and others whose names are escaping me at the moment. After one Panel, I was able to meet and engage Robb Wolf in a 30 min conversation about PTSD, TBI treatments he and Doc Parlsey (one I was forgetting above) are doing. Along with Vegan, Vegetarian confluences of interest with Ancestral Health model, a lot more in common with the two than folks suspect (Jen) its more a degree of toleration and how can they work as movements to effect change. And got the answer to my personal question about Tobacco cessation.
4. The Carb Nite Hangout was excellent on Friday Night, Got to meet some more great folks from Body IO and pick their brains. Not something most fitness pros will let you do for free (including some of the Big Wigs mentioned above). Got some answers and clarification on a couple of training and eating Q's I've had.
5. On a professional note I have been working on a Requisition package for the ARX Omni with a Modification for Wheelchair Athletes. Met Jim Keen who is the product rep I've been emailing since last July so good to shake his hand and he allowed me to try the Omni. Hopefully will get this approved in the coming year.
All in all a great experience. Confirms to me that a Good health template is certainly a doable thing. For me just have to do.

So sad I missed some of the presentations on Sunday at PaeloF(x). Saturday was great in the stuff I saw or participated in. Next year I will arrive on time and stay through Sunday presentations. I love learning and attending seminars. Left kinda sad I wasn't able to talk to Robb Wolf. I thought his presentations was powerful- both in delivery and concept. As I walked around the airport on Sunday, I looked up and saw him standing by himself. Amazingly when I introduced myself, he goes "Kim, of course, we've tweeted and emailed" back and forth for awhile. Had a nice chat about his work and the new novelty theory.
Kelly, Agree with John on you can eat well in most any restaurant, just key on proteins and veggies. Don't be afraid to ask them to swap out the starch or other side for veggies. The big thing on eating out you can't control so much is the use of vegetable oils. I can't change that about the average restaurant, and don't overly stress about it (tho I usually carry olive oil and just use that on my salads versus using a dressing made with canola or soybean oils) I can definitely tell the vegetable oils cause inflammation in me, but it is a trade off in traveling. I just make sure I keep sleep, stress and everything else as managed as possible.
John,I realized when I got to the hotel I hadn't said goodbye. Sorry about that. I was both exhausted and over my social limit for the day. Despite appearances I am strongly introverted. Crowds, people etc. while I enjoy drain me terribly. I cope by going off by myself - and know when I've had too much. I sometimes think the reason I enjoy traveling with work so much is the forced alone time of it to recharge.
Heron, wished you coulda made it...but now that I know all you guys do for the fosters and such, understand how difficult both of you leaving would be. I was really impressed with Christine the little I interacted with her...and saw that Arturo spoke with her and AJ quite a bit. So great that you have a partner in Arturo that is like minded.
Carol, so glad I got to meet you face to face! You are so amazing the way you network and interact with folks. Not so natural for me. As to how you look...the fact that you and Caroline are in weight loss challenges is insane. You are both so tiny..esp. if that was you at a "high/out of shape" weight. You really do need to throw that scale away and focus on building lean mass versus losing weight! Really, you are beautiful with a great shape as is. But I'll always push lifting heavy on women....0 -
Carol, I was telling Arturo to tell you that you look Awesome, lean and fit and I agree with Kim Caroline and you are tiny. And I don't mean height, I mean body frame wise. But, I totally get it that everybody feels comfortable at different weight.( And you might be tired of people telling you that you don't need to lose weight lol. ) Where you are right now, you should just focus on recomp.. Do pilates, if you don't have a weights set up at home. There are plenty of free youtube videos. In fact a popular youtube pilates instructor was all over the internet recently for her very cool video on body acceptance. She is a pilates instructor with tight abs and people are still criticizing her body. Isn't that insane? And here's a picture of Miss Universe 1952, When I see that, I think beautiful, healthy, natural women. You'd notice "thigh gap" wasn't a thing, curves are celebrated and boobs are all normal sized. I'm not saying big breast is a bad thing but it seems that a lot of women are chasing the thigh gap, big breast look. You are an introvert.. I totally get it. a lot People think that introverts don't like to talk or aren't all that friendly and that is a sad misconception.. They just have different thresholds and sensitivities is all. I know what you mean when you said you feel drained and need to recharge. I'm not saying that we feel the level or frequency of "drained" as you. But I think most of us have been to some social event, i.e: family reunions/gathering with dramas, PTA meetings, networking functions, etc.. where after that you feel exhausted and would rather have some quiet alone time afterwards. So enjoy your recharge!!0 -
Kelly, I agree with everybody, no matter where you go, grilled protein and vegetable are common.
And always ask if you are not sure. If its a chain, check out the ingredients on their website..
But yes, I always ask to substitute starch for veggie or tell them not to bring out the bread basket. If you are upfront, and polite about it, most of the time they will be more than happy to accommodate you as opposed to, (and I see it all the time) the person sending the food back AFTER it has arrived because there is something on the plate that they can't have or don't want. Had they ask beforehand the restaurant wouldn't have to throw away perfectly good food.0 -

Kim - I'm with you on Sunday at Paleo, Missed some good ones but Dan's travel on Monday meant we had to get moving. Left at 0500 and got home at 1100 pm. (2300) . Glad we did though since the Weather on Mon was pretty bad all along our route. Cool Beans on the chat with Robb Wolf, the man is brilliant and approachable like a next door neighbor.
Heron - You were missed many times this weekend but yep the fosters gotta have what they gotta have. Been there with Children so 'unnerstan' . So looking forward to Vegas and meeting you.

This was an very interesting weekend for me in the Internal Pscy Ops arena. Through my Adult Life my issues with weight have been about a number or body comp numbers in particular. Paleo Fx kind of opened up a different perspective for me. Up until I quit smoking my weight was about the same as my son Daniels is now. pretty happy with it at my age. I quit smoking in part because I wanted to present the healthiest appearance, and not only to you my friends but to the Paleo community I would meet. Instead I gain 30lbs in a couple weeks and look like a pregnant guy from the side. Not happy about that but in a Spock like way consider it 'very interesting' that some one with a well controlled diet and exercise program is still going to encounter this. In a 'Kirk' like way very G*& D@*& frustrated that a years worth of weight and body comp work from the last 4 years went down the tubes so fast.
I guess were I'm going with this is even when we only have ourselves to please, we may find it impossible to do. So Carol and Caroline just wanted to pass along you both look great at current body comp. The 20-30 min to move may be difficult to find but you are gonna feel sooooo much better if you do.

How fantastic that Kelly can throw out a question about St. Paul and get so much good info in just a day?? Love it. Heron - thank you for the kind words about my size. It is a constant struggle. I would for sure love to lose this celulite that is now on the FRONT of my thighs (that is something new and fun) but I am really working on getting comfortable with this size. It is just those old jeans and pants (not so old) that don't fit anymore that are there in the closet mocking me always. I appreciate the kind words from you and Kim though. The challenge I am currently in is a maintenance challenge. Still... if I'm honest, I want the thighs SMALLER.
You guys gave me a lot of good stuff to think about. I really do need to focus on strength training and toning. That is for sure the missing piece. I have not even walked lately much less worked out.
I am so glad that I over-committed to these runs and events or I would never get my nose out of the books.
Kim - Again, super fantastic to hug you in person and share some laughs. And what a cool thing to chat with Robb Wolf! I couldn't wait to see him and when I finally did, he agreed to a photo and then got whisked away.
Heron: I am SUPER excited to meet you in Vegas!!! You will be totally tempted to do the next run with us. That is if my husband agrees to another one of these runs. I have Chicago in 2 weeks and he knows I am not training. Just leaving him for another weekend wiht the kids. Before you feel too sorry for him, he is leaving for 4 1/2 days at the beach tomorrow... he is working from "home" there. My life will be EXTRA hectic Wed-Sun as I pay it forward.
Kelly - I hope you and Mark are able to meet up with us somewhere some time. Can't tell you how amazing it is to have met John, Kim, Arturo and know that I am going to meet more of you guys over the next few months. It is really surreal... some of your favorite people in the flesh!!

Instead had a showing. Didn't get lunch til 2:30. No walk for me at that point (I do realize that I walk 3 times a day so missing one won't kill me lol). Got home from work to realize I left my cell at the office! Tomorrow will be better God willing lol or else I need to do hobby therapy0 -

Kelly - Bummer on the wonky day, shake it off and move out smartly for another iteration of fun. If you're gonna do some hobby therapy make sure its only paper targets eh? Dittos on Carols Sentiment about hooking up with you guys. Would be a blast.
Carol - Have some fun re-bonding with kiddo's while your hubby gets a 'working' rest. Once the boys were 7-8 Zena would get an external rest/retreat after I returned from deployments, generally for a week or so. Was always a great time for me showing the lads how 'guys' did stuff. While that may not be a factor for you, re-enforcing the momma bond presents a lot more chances to smile.
All Righty then folks the day lies before us, the opportunities to excel are everywhere, get some!

I can't even explain the hectic craziness that I'm in the middle of, but everybody over here is healthy and so I'm focusing on that! Managing to find some joy in it.

Just finish my body IO assessment form. Extremely extensive.. One of the requirement is you have to include a picture (you don't have to show your face but I really didn't care about that ) boy, a picture is very very motivating.. Now whenever I want to give in to certain thing I just have to look at the picture. LOL I don't have any body image issue, I don't think I look huge. I'm just looking kind of "soft" . Yes I see stretch marks and cellulite.. Eh, not a big thing. I've had stretch marks ever since I was 12 when I hit puberty, as for cellulite, that's genetics. When I was at my fittest, I still have cellulite, granted, not as much as I do now, but it was there.
I got my DNA results back from 23andme. Yay! and I am only 49% Chinese LOL Now, being a Chinese this percentage came as a surprise. I know I'm not 100% Chinese but I was guessing 60-75%. My mom is technically Chinese on paper, but her people are aboriginals, native to Taiwan, before there was Chinese or Dutch.
In fact all pacific islander can trace their DNA back to my mom's people. Pretty cool huh? Unfortunately 23andme focuses more on health not ancestry. National geography's DNA test focuses on ancestry and can give me more details. I might get the kit later this year. I have SE Asia and Native American in the other percentage.. The native American don't surprise me since the majority of native Americans migrate to the Americas 50-70K years ago.
My whole life people often ask what am I mix with? I get Hawaiian a lot . Well, now I know!
I also did the prometheus DNA analysis that go through you raw DNA data and tell you what those means.. SUPER interesting!! Going to watch Dr Patrick's video about using the data to tailor the diet that works with your genes. For a total of $105 you can know so much about your DNA makeup. Well worth it!
John, Kim, you guys like data, are you guys interested in this kind of data? None of my friends want to do the DNA test because they'd rather not know...0 -

Heron, I've been going back and forth on 23and Me. Want to do... one of those really interesting things that those around me think are insane. I have hesitated because I thought they could no longer provide interpretations for the results. Did you get raw data and use another service to read/interpret, or am I wrong that they don't do that. Anything interesting from a health perspective.
Home from class. One night in own bed then off again. This time Louisville . Hubby biz trip. KY Derby. I love this trip. Need to unpack, do laundry repack my fancy clothes and hats (the hats require a second suitcase). Oh and clean house. Its kinda a disaster and Mom arrives in morning to house sit the kiddo, house and pets.0 -

Lol the day got worse in that a co worker passed away suddenly last night. As a result today started rough. But by 3 I was off work, talking to mark and getting a new range bag. My little man (he calls me grandma) played with me tonight too. So it has been an awesome day and tomorrow shall be better!0

Hey everybody. It's Thursday and the end of the work week for me. Next week starts some trips to meet some awesometastic folks. Let's see, Kim will be in my neck of the woods (well, an hourish away) next week. Then Carol and John will be playing Tough Mudder, along with some folks I know from YouTube (oh, I am soooooo ready to give Nick some flack - hehehe). I sure hope I don't have to do much work. Taking pictures and recording video is hard. Then a trip over the Memorial Day weekend to visit some more awesome peeps from YouTube as well as Sandi, the owner of Offhand Gear (creator of the NORB).
I'm really hoping that getting away from home a bit more often will help my mood and motivation.
I'm going to try a Whole30 with Carol. I need something to challenge me again. Having no challenge or accountability is really hurting me. So we'll see how that goes. Heron sent me some information to look over as well. Thank you again for that. I just found out that the studio where I was planning to restart my Pilates journey has closed. So now I have to find somewhere else.

Hi Kim, Oh I envy you! When does a girl get to wear pretty dress and gorgeous hats in the U.S except for the KY Derby? LOL And yes, hats have always had their own suitcases.
Yes, you get the raw data and a company prometheaus analyze the data and compiled it to a relatively user friendly report. It cost $5 and 10-20min and super simple procedure. Watch those videos that I included and you might change your mind on it If you don't want to know certain things then don't look for that gene. Unfortunately the gene that tells you if you are best suited to eat low carb is the same gene that tells you your chances of Alzheimer and dementia and I know some people don't want to know that. For me, I had a lot of "AHA" moments, I have ADHD and I have the gene for it, I have a lot of undesirable traits that I have the gene for, not that its an excuse but it helps someone like me to not be too hard on myself and understand that those traits encoded in me and I can't change them but knowing it, help me better understand myself and find workarounds to certain issues. Also I have certain gene with high frequency to not respond to certain drugs, which made sense because it the past there was some dosage issues that my doctor had difficulties with.
Our body is extremely complex and it constantly converting what it absorbs to what our body needs. For example if you have genes that can't convert certain types of Vitamin efficiently, wouldn't you want to know so you can remedy that by taking extra supplements?

Decreased phosphatidylcholine can lead to decreased fat removal from the liver and, consequently, fatty liver.

Having one A is associated with reduced PEMT function and is more pronounced if homozygous (A;A).
There is another common polymorphism in the PEMT gene; however, this specific polymorphism is not genotyped by 23andMe. PEMT is activated by estrogen but 44% of women have a polymorphism that makes PEMT unresponsive to estrogen. Remember, since PEMT makes phosphatidylcholine this means that premenopausal women are some what protected from low phosphatidylcholine due to low dietary intake. Postmenopausal women must increase their dietary intake of choline or phosphatidylcholine. For the 44% of women that have this polymorphism, the gene is unable to respond to estrogen, and thus, require a much higher dietary intake of choline or phosphatidylcholine. Reference
The following is the non-estrogen responsive polymorphism in the PEMT gene:

Those are simple fixes that can potentially improve the quality of your life drastically. All these vitamins and enzymes plays a key role in repairing and turning on and off our DNA (epigenetics) For example even if one inherit certain cancer gene, with the right nutrition and supplement one can turn the genes that helps fend off cancer. And once our genes is turn on off, we can potentially pass on those traits to our offsrpings!! So even if you come from a long line of diabetics or heart disease, you can potentially change your odds. How cool is science right now?!! And just a tad scary/sci fi. We are not that far off to engineering "perfect humans" LOL To top it off a small team of endocrinologist has recently discovered a small cluster of population in Ecuador that may very well be immune to cancer and diabetes !!! Its called the Laron Syndrome. It's a rare form of dwarfism but in a nutshell their growth hormones receptors that tells cells divide and multiply is damaged hence their dwarfism but that also means that cancer cell cannot divide and multiply! What more interesting is that they trace their ancestors to be of Spain descendants and first cousins! Ha!

Hello all! It's been a busy week and I've lurked twice and finally have some time to type. Very interesting how complicated life can get!
It looks like paleo fx was a blast! Loved the pics on FB Carol! You are a vibrant leader for our community!
Jen - we've been using John's board on FB for the whole30... and I'm assuming he won't kick us off if you wanted some accountability there. I did not read It Starts with Food but have been my own worst enemy the last non-whole30 week. I am making terrible choices for myself. First 4 days ok... just had some dairy and experimented but then *bam* bad eating decisions. Mostly at night or late at work, so it's not a complete wash or anything. So I need a better plan. I did lose 8.8 lbs and a few inches in my month and felt great overall. Tonight I had an iced coffee (no sugar, just cream) at 6pm and now am still up when it's past midnight and I'm normally passed out grr...
Heron - very interesting about the genetics! I have no real desire to know but in Canada there is so much less testing and medical coverage is so different I feel we're so far behind sometimes and maybe it would be a good idea? But I thought the company was kaput so thanks for the info!

I'm off this wknd and the plans are: dinner with my family Saturday night, dinner with hubby's family Sunday night and grocery shopping, laundry and lots of yard work during the day! Today before I left for work we did almost two more hours of hauling tires and joked that our property might be able to accommodate a Tough Mudder here! LOL

Heron: "simple fixes that can possibly improve the quality of your life drastically"...awesome!!! I love that perspective. I love the things we can do when we have reliable data. I will look into this but only when I have time to analyze what I get back.. Late summer is the light at the end of the tunnel.
Angela: I had a very similar "after whole30" experience last time. Thankfully I was able to put the breaks on things before I did too much damage. I'm doing another whole30 because this is working for me: being strict with an elimination diet for 30 days & then relaxing a bit for a while.. And then getting strict again. Seems so much easier each time I do one now. And more things are sticking with me even after day 30. It's just fun to do these things together. You're welcome to start again with us Monday!! And awesome job on the tire-hauling! Was that a workout?? And did you see me at PFX with Dean Dwyer??

Oaks Day. Somehow I got zero full outfit pics. It was a dress with a jacket. Will try to do better today. Oaks women traditionally wear some pink. Today at Derby I'll be in black & white. And Heron is so right, tons of fun to dress up in a fancy hat for the day!

Dean Dwyer -Primal Blueprint interview episode #65
"I don't have willpower" an often used as an excuse to take us off the hook.
Honeymoon period of making changes-we can do it, but it wears off. Often get less strict. These cycles could continue. One area may struggle, while maintaining others.
Willpower is a thought process. Folks with success think differently. We look at others and try to emulate their actions. This doesn't lead to success. Must be an inside out, changing way you think, versus outside in…ie changing behavior.
You can force yourself to go through a 30,60,90 day program, but if your thinking doesn't change you will go back to where you started (or worse). You may temporarily change what you're doing. But if you haven't changed how you think, you will return to old behaviors.
Changing mindset…we mix up behaviors for outcomes. Weight loss is an outcome. Outcomes are not actionable. You do have to know your goal or where you want to go. If weight loss is my goal, I should have an idea of where I want to be when finished. However, then must focus on behaviors and processes needed to get there. That promote where we want to go. Not keep focusing on the goal or outcome. And the mindset that will keep us there, versus the mindset of making temporary changes and stopping.
Weight loss is not like calculating compounded interest. Not linear. Not predictable. Instead must focus on process to get there. (Versus I'll lose XX pounds in XX days). Must unlearn the "fast food" fast results mindset and adopt a process mindset.
3 factors of success in folks who maintained weight loss
1. Eat breakfast everyday - this is more around controlling their food environment versus literally eating breakfast. First meal I prepare, I plan, I know is correct, sets up for the day.
2. Work out from home
3. Weigh themselves everyday- not that we have to weigh, the key is tracking change. What can be measured can be managed. Collecting data while keeping them in perspective.
We have to creat our own theories. Find what works for us, that we believe in…not just try to adopt other's habits.
Power of consistency…remaining consistent becomes huge factor in success. We all have one core behavior to drive success in health. If we could figure that out will have massive effect of our health.
Magic in stacking right behaviors together ( find 3-5 vital behaviors) stay consistent. You will have success. 10k day, monitor/measure, ?? What's your three? Taking it beyond weeks and months, rather years and decades. Consistency a fundamental aspect of willpower.
Be consistent in your responses and the food pushers will leave you alone. But if you say yes sometimes, the donut pushers will keep pushing.
Most of us know what we should be doing. We often take on too much and burn out. Or give up too soon and don't anchor/embed habits. Particularly those 3-5 key habits.
The change that can make huge difference……focus on one thing. One area of your life you are struggling the most. Find one thing that you will be able to do consistently, it can be a small step is fine to build on. Must be something you can do. That's realistic. Individual to you. Figure out the processes you need to adopt change to allow you to do this behavior. Find it, do it. Consistently. . . For now on.
