So I just hit my month since my surgery and I've lost 30lbs which is awesome however due to my lupus and arthritis its made it impossible to work out. Walking lately seems impossible its just ahhhhh. This is the point where I would turn to food for comfort thankfully I haven't but just been super emotional. Has anyone else has problems exercising after surgery? I could really use some help. I have my brother's wedding coming up in a few weeks and our family loves to dance.

Walking should be really the only exercise you should be trying right now. My fibromyalgia has prevented me from being able to exercise many times. I try to take it in stride and move when I can. I won't stress over it though. Hang in there!

I'm 9 weeks out and walking is all that I have done so far. Some days, I noticed that if I walk too far or long, I get shakey and start sweating. I haven't felt up to pushing harder. Good Luck!

I did mostly walking for the first 3 mos. A couple of times I tried the elliptical machine but could only do it for 10 minutes or so. If you have a pool available to you, you might try swimming or walking in the pool. That should be easier for your joints.

I'll be 11 weeks out tomorrow and the only exercise I do is walk a mile and a half each day. I probably don't lose as quickly as some people (I'm down to 205 lbs from my heaviest weight of 250 and my surgical weight of 236), but I also haven't shown any signs of excess skin or anything like that. Definitely at least walk or swim if you can - even if you're not aggressively exercising, the weight is still going to come off just from lower caloric intake.

I focus on increasing daily activity rather than exercise. It works for me.

I have arthritis and joint damage from my lower back down. All those years at 380+ pounds. I walk regularly and use my pilates machine. Frankly, I could use the pilates machine much more than I do. Anyway, I am almost 4 years out from surgery. And still, what I do more than anything for exercise is walk. I've tried other things and even enjoyed some of them. But because of the damage to my joints, I inevitably wind up getting injured and then I'm doing nothing while the injury heals. I've looked into other non-impact activities like bike riding and swimming. Haven't found a place to swim that works for my schedule needs and need a recumbent bike, regular bikes cause pain, and that's out of my price range. So I pretty much stick to walking as it's better than doing nothing. I like grim-traveler's adea of increasing daily activity rather than exercise.

This week is my one month surgiversary, don't do what I did this past weekend, I pushed myself to do lots of yardwork - burned over 1100 calories in one day. In the week leading up, I went to yoga and walked and did all sorts of things...I should also mention that I am not yet hitting 600 calories a day, most days I getting close but I haven't been able to break that 600 barrier yet. I do meet my 60 gram protein goal. Anyway long story short - Monday I crashed hard, I could hardly function. Tuesday I couldn't stay at work all day. Today I am still in an energy deficit but feel like I might be coming out of it...I guess what I am trying to say is listen to your body, don't push harder than you think your body can handle right now, it takes a lot longer for the body to bounce back than it used to.

You really must go easy on exercise and build up. Since you have arthritis and lupus the swimming or water aerobics is good. Yoga might work for you as well. I started out walking and then doing video exercises until I felt more comfortable. Try Zumba gold, it is a slower pace Zumba class and easy on joints, not alot of jumping. I know one person in our support group did no exercise at all and managed somehow to get to her goal.

Well I just got the cortisone shots in my knees (omg that was so painful) so hopefully that will help. My Rheumatologist recommend to relax a few days but then to try the swimming and see how that goes. So I plan on starting that this weekend. Thanks for all the advice and support :)
