Just starting out

Hi all

I'm just starting out with swimming as I am quite limited to exercise due to various reasons so swimming really want is the best option for me.

I've been needed to lose weight and tone up for a few years now but have always struggled with exercise until my doctors suggested swimming so thought I would give this a try.

To help kick my butt and motivate me, I have signed myself up for an open water sea swim of 2.5k for charity. It's going to be tough as I am very unfit but I'm up for the challenge!

Tomorrow is going to be my first swim and am hoping to go 3 times a week for about 30-45 minutes a go. Of course I would love it if this worked out for my weight loss as I will also be aiming to eat better but overall I need to improve my fitness.

So this is my aim and I would love to hear from anyone else who is maybe in the same boat as me and just starting out as I know I could do with some extra motivation and more than happy to help encourage others :)

Welcome to the group, Sara - most of us here are in the same boat, that's why we're here. Some are at different stages & some have different goals, but we can all relate. I think you'll be happy with how your health improves if you stick to it. Best of luck with the open water swim, I think it's great that you gave yourself a goal to work towards to keep you coming back......

Welcome! Swimming is the best exercise. It's great that you're challenging yourself by setting goals.

When's your open water swim going to be?

I did something similar -- signed up for some open water swims (a 2 mile and a 1500 meter one).

One thing I cannot recommend strongly enough: Open water training! You'll get up to the distance faster than you think. Distances that were once kind of a challenge are now pretty much.. well Thursday, ya know? Consistency is the key there.

Hey Sara ....I'm relatively new to the swimming thing myself, I'm about 4 months into it. For me an early key was to swim alternating stroke types up and down the pool. I can 'catch my breath' on the backstrokes where my face is out of water for the entire length. Depending on your aerobic fitness that may not be an issue.

When I first went into the pool I was swimming about 625m in 30 minutes. I'm now up to about 1700m in 60 minutes. In my mind 'real swimmmers' can do about 3200m in 60 minutes.

Less on a fitness level than a 'make it enjoyable' level was getting the ability to listen to audiobooks (or music) while swimming. I initially went with a waterproof phone case ($10) but have found that I prefer a waterproof player (~$35).

Open water doesn't hold an allure for me :)
Really no place to safely train in open water around here. Too much boat traffic. I suppose I could do 'laps' on the other side of the rope at Hanging Rock. But that water is nearly as rough as true open water.
Good luck with achieve that goal. and welcome to swimming for fitness.

NC. The profile pick is on the road up to Mount Mitchell.
