I just started low carb/gluten free this week. I am trying to lose a large amount of weight after being overweight my whole life. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is the reason for being gluten free. I would love to have friends to talk to about this, because most of my family thinks I'm nuts for cutting so many foods out of my diet!

You've come to the right place!
Check out the Launch Pad for a bunch of good resources, including a huge list of recipe sites and a thread dedicated to recipes.
Also, have a gander at the Paleo group -- http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/37-primal-paleo-support-group -- you'll find a bunch of like-minded gluten-free people there, too (not saying we aren't here, since a good chunk of us pretty much are by virtue of too few carbs to warrant grains, but the Paleo folks are gluten free on principle, so all their recipes and stuff will be, by default).0 -

Hiya! Step one, if they insist you're cutting things out, remind them you're simply replacing them with other choices, the same way they choose not to eat bacon, butter, steak and cream as an everyday meal, while you can have it whenever you want.0

I went gluten-free about 8 or 9 years ago (celiac runs in my family). My system is much happier without it, and even happier when I eat low carb.0 -
Thanks everyone for being so welcoming!0

Forget the gluten-free and do low carb. Only this way will you get rid of gluten and lose weight. A lot of gluten-free foods are made of potato starch and so forth, very high in carbs. The low carb diet consists of No sugars. No boxed crackers, cookies, cereal, oatmeal. Very little complex carbs like rice, potatoes, pasta. I would say if you want that you eat 1/4 to 1/2 cup. But not everyday. Then, the fruit should be limited to rasberries or strawberries and blueberries but be mindful of the portion. And again, not everyday. If you want vit. C, you can buy Vit. C crystals. No bananas, everyone likes them so I mention them. The complex carbs you should be eating are from veggies. Spinach and other leafy greens. As well as a ton of other veggies. However, dont eat cups of them, just a couple of cups per day. So what can you eat? Eggs, meat, fish, fats (saturated and monounsaturated). NO polyunsaturated oils. They are pretty toxic, I hear. Good Luck.0

While I agree with your assessment on GF crap foods, please note that there are some perfectly acceptable low carb foods that are still chock full of gluten, and tiny amounts matter when you're talking about autoimmune stuff. Soy sauce is the first one that comes to mind.
Bored, if you don't get the results that you are looking for with a low carb, GF diet, there are other dietary ways to help your thyroid with diet, though it can be hard. You might take a look through this: http://www.thepaleomom.com/2012/05/modifying-paleo-for-autoimmune.html
Did they tell you not to eat goitrogens (broccoli, cauli, cabbage, kale, & others) when they diagnosed you? Or that the standard take-more-iodine recommendation for low thyroid might make Hashimoto's worse?

Pinterest is also great for meal ideas!0

Twibbly, my doctor didn't say anything about diet at all. I do know now, four year later, about goitrogens and iodine just by researching it online. Annalisbeth74, I love pinterest!0

Sorry, I figured you'd just been diagnosed.0 -
No, I was diagnosed four years ago with hypothyroidism. This year I finally went to a specialist and found out it was Hashi's, insulin resistant hypoglycemia and PCOS.0
