It's such a depressing way of eating! I feel bad for the poor souls I see eating low fat dressing or reduced fat cheese! My favorite burger I make is a jalapeno pepper jack burger with either chipotle or kicking buffalo mayo.0

That looks amazing. What's your approach - do you count calories or just macros? I only ask because I'm trying to do both and I'm not sure all that would fit in one of my days0

Counting calories and counting macros are the same basic thing. The sum of your macros will equal your calories.
Fitting something like this into your day requires a high enough calorie goal or not having a calorie goal at all. A couple weeks back, I had two pounds of ground beef (from Fuddruckers) for dinner. That's approximately 2,600 calories, or more, in a single meal.

You're just not going to fit that meal into most calorie goals. So, you either give up on calorie goals or find a way around it.
The other option, is doing weekly calorie goals. So, you can have some days higher than others but aim for a weekly average. It's like aiming for 14,000 calories a week instead of 2,000 a day. The end result is the same deficit. But, you can have a 3,000 calorie day, as long as you have a couple 1,500 calorie days to offset it.0 -
This is my fourth day of ZC and as of this morning I'm down 2.6 lbs. That feels so good b/c despite being lchf <20 most of the time I hadn't lost any weight since the last week of March. I'm eating according to appetite and so far my calories have been <1000 or slightly above. Is that ok? Maybe as the days pass I'll want to eat more, but I get full pretty quickly.0

Follow hunger first. As long as you're not refusing to listen when your body says, "eat," you won't need to worry about the calories. If your body is only asking for 1,000 calories right now, it's got all it needs for what it's taking care of.

Thanks for explaining! I find it hard enough to stay on target every day so I don't want to be messing about trying to create an additional deficit! I think that would kill me! 1200 is not very many even with added exercise...0

Like @FIT_Goat said, whether you count calories or count macros, it's about the same thing. That said, my hunger signals pretty well match my calorie goal, and my macros pretty well fall into place, because I eat what's called "zero carb" (though I prefer "carnivore"), so I just eat meat and the macros take care of themselves. For example, yesterday, my ratios ended up about 10/20/70 c/p/f (it was a bit higher in carbs due to sauces on ribs I had at lunch and the milk sugar in the iced latte I had in the morning).
For those who are interested, that meal calculated out at about the following:
Calories: 1,416
Carbs: 4g
Fat: 113g
Protein: 85g
For those that don't already know -- no, I did not eat the lettuce, tomato, and pickles seen behind the burger. That's the approximate stats of the burger in the foreground. It was 2 7oz patties, a couple of pieces of Applewood smoked bacon, 2 slices of pepperjack cheese, and a tablespoon or two of bacon aioli.
There are a few things that made such a meal possible without blowing my deficit away:
1. A high enough base calorie goal. My usual calorie goal, at sedentary, is about 1,800 calories.
2. A two-meal a day schedule. I usually only eat two meals a day, plus maybe some coffee. This allows my meals to be larger by default. This also meant that prior to that meal, I had only consumed about half of my calories for the day, despite it being 8:30pm when I took that picture and was eating.
3. A lot of physical activity. According to my Fitbit and MFP, I earned an additional 1,800 calories yesterday, doubling my calorie allotment for the day and giving me about 3,700 calories to work with (according to Fitbit, I burned around 4,200 calories yesterday). I had spent the day getting and planting plants in my garden, which also included hauling dirt and mulch, as well as a lot of walking and digging in soil that has so much clay in it, a potter could set up shop with the contents of my yard and be set for life.
One nice thing about the way I'm eating right now, is that I could have foregone the above meal if circumstances had dictated it. Since it was hot off the grill, I had to wait a while for it to cool before I could eat it, and I was content doing so. In a past life, I'd have been working to try to eat it, potential burns be damned, because I'd be starving. That was an awesome realization.0 -

Thank you! I lost 3/4" off my waist and 1/4" off my knee area. Lots of dancin' going on in my head b/c I haven't had any kind of change in so long. No tummy/hip action yet. You'll hear me holler when that happens!0 -
I'm very confused when FIT Goat said counting calories and counting macros is the same. I could eat 200 sausages and my macros would be zero carb/60% fat/40 % protein or whatever - but I would have eaten 50,000 calories! Or do you mean I should set myself to 40g carb/70g fat/ 100g protein (for example) and then the calories would be in check?
Assume I can't eat ANYTHING as long as the macros were in proportion!!0 -
Macros should be based on grams and not percentages. Don't worry about percentages. Your body doesn't work that way.
Aim for 100g of protein (or whatever your goal is plus or minus a bit), aim to be below your carb goal, and then don't worry about the percent fat or how the percentages work out.0 -

Otherwise I agree with everything said in this thread. It's much easier to work with target numbers for macros, and calories sort of follow suit.

Is is possible to go too low on fat. But, again, it's absolute amounts and not percentages. Few people end up going too low on fat, though. At least if they're eating fatty meats and not sticking to the very lean stuff or protein powders. Eat enough that you're not hungry. And make most of what you eat fatty.0

Yeah, I finished a 24 hour fast with a plate full of meat, melted butter and some grilled veggies (On the Border Ultimate Grill). Why o why did I start this diet!?
