I could ask this elseware but I feel safe here.

Has anyone here ever before weaned off antidepressants and did you ever gets the "zaps"? I've weaned from 15 mg to 5 mg cipralex over 4 months. This drop from 7.5 to 5 has left me with the brain and body zaps. Doesn't matter what I'm doing but I get what feels like an electric shock that starts in my brain and goes through my body. It makes me panic a little bit but I can calm myself down and then I'm fine. I've called my doctors office and I booked an appointment for the middle of June (yes....middle of June. Thanks free healthcare) but I'm wondering if anyone has been there done that?

Your pharmacist might be able to help with the tapering down and its side effects and what is causing the withdrawal symptoms. He might suggest you increase back to 7.5 until you see your doc... Good luck!

Yes and it is one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. So sorry you are going through this.

Those are so scary, and can be very common. If you have your doc's blessings about weaning, ask them to prescribe a short term benzodiazapine (sedative) to help alleviate some of those most unpleasant symptoms. Consider waiting til your appointment if you can't get it sooner. There are some sources on the net that give suggestions for certain amino acid combinations that may help, as well. Good luck!

I remember those brain zaps! I am off those meds now and so happy they are gone.

I do have benzos that are probably long past expired. Lol. I carry them in my purse for comfort but have only ever used them twice in 5 years. I work in nursing so I've seen how scary benzos can be so I'd rather not use them.

Ang, yes I have been there and it is difficult and scary but you can get through it. During the worst crisis in my life, I progressed from mildly depressed to having anxiety and then panic attacks. I can't remember all the names of the meds I was on, but kicked all of them gradually. I got rid of the panic attack one first, since it zonked me out, then I gradually weaned myself off the 300mg dose of Effexor, under the direction of my Dr. It did give me brain zaps as I was reducing the dosage. I spent quite a few months doing this until I was off it completely. I also used to take a sleeping pill, but that was the next drug to kick, and I did it.

I think I was more afraid of the process than it ended up being, if that makes sense. Googling people's reactions to getting off that drug really scared me, but in actuality, it was very doable in the end. I don't think any of those drugs even helped me feel better, and I feel 100 times better off them and eating this way really helps too. I think all the healthy fat we eat helps the brain and mood feel better. Juts get off the drug gradually and you will be fine.

I now try to keep everything in my life as natural as possible and will never reach for a drug ( even if this is the only option my doctor has given me ) as a way to deal with a medical issue. If I have pain in my body, I want the issue fixed, not just masked with a drug. I want to really feel and experience my feelings too, and deal with them...and I can do it, and so can you ! Good luck, you can do it !

Please consult your pharmacist (if you can't see your doctor) before you add any aminos or herbal meds. Some of them may conflict with your prescribed meds.

EFFEXOR is terrifying, OMG. Yeah, even herbals have some whacked out side effects. I'm looking forward to being able to ditch everything eventually hopefully... well, at least a good chunk of it all!
