I was doing some research on an academic database to find articles about LCHF eating to bring in to my nurse practitioner to pretty much convince her I'm not going to keel over and die, and I found one that said that being in a state of ketosis can produce false positives on a alcohol breathalyzer test because of the ketones in the breath. Just wanted to warn everyone!

Oh geez. I wonder if its true. I'd totally go ask a cop but they probably wouldn't believe me and I'd go to jail lol

I'll see if I can find the article again. You probably won't be able to see the whole thing without a subscription, unless it was an open source publication, but you can at least read an abstract. It was peer-reviewed, not some magazine article.

He hasn't heard of it, so it probably wasn't mentioned at all. Joy.

You should be our guinea pig! Ask your BIL to come over so you can try out his breathalyzer machine. Do it do it!

I would, but I'm not in ketosis right now.

Does it make any difference to the blood test the police get you to do if you fail the breath one?

I googled and the blood test will show properly because blood ketones register different.

The high end blow meters used by the police are set up to only detect alcohol. $15 meters off eBay will detect acetone and I use one for a ketosis ball park monitoring to save blood. :)

The blood test is definitive and specific to ethanol. Ketones, hydrogen etc may well register on a breathalyzer that just detects combustible gases.
