Found this article yesterday. Interesting mice study about a hormone in low carb dieters turning on the body's use of stored fat for energy.

Great Article! I'm excited to see future research into the matter especially with humans.

Very interesting... I have been eating low carb most of my life and I found it is very hard to get to Ketosis anymore. This article gives me a clue why my weight loss has slowed. I wish it would have went further and gave a solution.
    Thanks for sharing.

That article was from 2007, so there has already been much future research. :)

Recent studies suggest the hormone has nothing to do with fat burning, but is secreted due to protein malnutrition:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26099854

Our data indicate that the multiple systemic effects of KD exposure in mice, previously ascribed to increased FGF21 secretion, are rather a consequence of protein malnutrition.

High levels of FGF21 are also associated with heart disease:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26091256

The level of serum FGF21 is independently associated with the presence of AMI in Chinese patients. High FGF21 levels might be related to the incidence of re-infarction within 30 days after onset.

Science never sits still for very long. :)

I love that I can count on you to provide this kind of information.
I appreciate how well informed you are.

It's not a matter of being well-informed. It's the wonderful PubMed database:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=fgf21

The reason the new studies come so quickly is because these hormones and receptors are seen as potentially lucrative drug targets. It's kind of sad in a way. You don't see nearly as many good old-fashioned studies that actually try to advance our understanding.

Aother article in the same window really irritated me. AGAIN they give ALL the credit to "cut calories, move more" ……sigh

    16 March 2005
New Study Examines How Low-Carb Diets Work

    clip:
The message is: Calories count. If you want to lose weight, you have to decrease your food intake or increase your physical activity. It helps to know that carbohydrates make it more difficult to reduce food intake. So cutting the carbohydrates, at least to some extent, will help keep down the caloric intake. With fewer carbohydrates, you're going to eat fewer total calories a day."

WTF? They show how great low carb is for easily losing..then revert right back to crediting CICO? ..so why even bother titling the article LC? prolly just to get attention as 2005 was right in the heyday of LC news.

Hm, thanks. I didn't notice the date at first but would have wondered what the follow up was. You're awesome!

This is my favorite thing about this group. Smart people doing research about this WOE, finding articles and posting them to share with the group, discussing food and diets, raising pros/cons, adding commentary and debate in an intellectual, respectful, civil, manner. Thanks for all the fine info!
