Why did you stop?

There seems to be a common theme that a lot of this group were keen swimmers in their youth .....
Why did you stop and what is going to keep you going this time?
I did not have the bug as a kid, and I wonder what might help disrail me that I need to guard against...

Maybe because I wasn't fast enough to get into the swim team, and got more heavily into rugby.
It was always real tough on my joints (rugby) but at that age I just worked through the pain, but I wouldn't put myself through that now!0 -
For me it was the hours. Swim team practiced at 5 or 6 am. My parents couldn't make that work with their work schedules, but I also wasn't keen on getting up early enough for that. High school swim team practiced after school, so I could have done that, and did consider it my freshman year, but by that time I was playing very competitive softball and there was no way to make it work with my softball schedule, which was year round.0

I started to swim at 39 as part of my mid life crisis. I wanted to swim Rottnest a 20km ocean swim. I succeeded. I then swum casually for a few years. I then decided at 47, I wanted to swim the English Channel. I trained so so hard. For so long. I succeeded. A year later, I struggle to get to a pool or ocean. I struggle to swim. I have lost motivation. You lose it so quickly.
You need a continuous set of goals and determination to achieve. If not you stop and its hard to return.0 -
I gave up at 17 as I didn't have the desire to take it to the next level after national age groups. I was also doing tennis basketball guitar piano and heading to uni the next year so I felt like I'd done what I wanted. 27 years later I came back lol.0

I never got in. Pushed into the pool (shallow end at that) at age 10 and pretty much afraid of water after that. Decided it was time to conquer the fear. Then I found out how fun (and challenging!) swimming is. Still trying to make myself look like the other people in the lanes next to me, lol...0

I stopped swimming competitively after Freshman year in high school because I started working. My school did not have a pool so we used the pool of a nearby high school so the only time available to us for practice was evenings.0
