I think my nutritionist fired me today

Background: I had a lot of physical changes to my digestive tract from surgery last year resulting from a car accident. Prior to that I had been eating LC, following an elimination diet based on nutritional blood analysis. Until last month I ate whatever I wanted without tracking. At that time, I consulted with a nutritionist to see if I needed to make any changes.

Today was the follow-up. I gave her my food diary to peruse.

She asked: What does water fast mean?
How can we find you more carbs to eat?
More of the same. She was disgusted by my liverwurst.

She then said she may as well weigh me although I cannot have lost any weight. I was down 11 lbs in 4.5 weeks lol. She asked me if I thought it was all water.

Who knows? I don't care. I just need to be out of pain and this way of eating helps me do that.

We mutually agreed that I was better off doing this on my own.

Wow. Not even sure what to say, but her responses to you seem very...well I would have been pissed off! And well done on the weightloss also :-)

Lol! Honey, you didn't get fired! You got promoted!
I bet her head has been spinning all day! She's been questioning how it could possibly be that you have lost weight and has been digging through every resource she has to find out how it can be explained.
Either that, or she will shrug it off with a generic explanation of water weight and go on happily advising in her previous methods without another thought because that's more comfortable than questioning what she's been taught.
She probably figures you'll be back in a few months needing her help. Lol
    Congrats on your success!

lmbo! :naughty: I feel this way everytime people bring up how unhealthy I eat. I'm definately feeling and looking better a week on keto than a week on SAD. My family's pushing me to go see a nutritionist and I can't wait to grin evilly at them and share my results. I do need to get my labs done though so I can rub it in their faces though. :smirk:

That is sweet, sweet motivation right there! Lol

    You'll show them!

mcpostelle save your money on a nutritionist with some yummy beef (or liverwurst!)

The one I saw last year that helped me with my sensitivity testing seemed good but she was out of state. I only saw her for about a month before the car accident. We were doing elimination and did not talk about keto.

Perhaps YOU should fire her and find a nutritionist or dietician that is easier to work with. A dietician is more qualified, anyway.

After watching the NZ RD's who were formally "put on notice" by the ENTIRE RD professionals for their country both ladies shared how negative LC was seen by the RDs..they are simply TRAINED to follow a WOE that is NOT what we are doing. ( And Prof Noakes was just legally charged in S.A. for telling a mom to feed her child 'low carb', case still going on..he may go to JAIL for this advice..that's how ANTI-LCHF the nutrition experts are!!)

These are people trained not to jump on any new 'diet' ….they look at the long term, and must comply with the US GOV's (or their country) nutrition advice. [despite at in 2015 a change was made to the fats %, etc.]

My VA clinic RD is a sweet lady, she tries hard at monthly meetings to show the guys how to do blender shakes with spinach, berries, water, garlic!, ground flaxseed, but NO protein powder..to help them eat more veggies…all of it is centered on the 'healthy plate'

she has NEVER been openly positive abut my LC, or asked ANY Q's about my carbs are low..ie: then what are my fats & protein?..she NEVER asks because she doesn't want to hear me say it in group, and then have to be negative.. she can't have me introduce NEW/Different info than what she preaches!! since I'm losing weight she can't discourage me, but also will not support me..it's against her training.

There really is nowhere to turn if your medical/RD staff are not accepting of LCHF…so we are fortunate there is more 'noise' than ever about this woe, AND great info by diet doctor.com, Attia, Eades, Volek/Phinney and all the NON experts like Jimmy Moore and others who have been successful and share.

She was an RDN, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She took my health insurance.

She showed me an articles about toxic protein powders found to have heavy metals. Maybe this is something they focus on too and why the VA person never mentions it.

I fired my first internal medicine specialist

He wanted to treat type 2 diabetes like type 1. No desire to attempt to reverse it.

    I fired his sorry *kitten*.

You don't owe some Dr blind obedience just because they have a diploma

I hope you find someone you can team up with for success!

Rock on!!! So true. We have to be responsible for our own health. And these kinds of people don't deserve to earn money unless they're working to improve our health. Hooray for you, professional, to leave him in the dust.

I was ready, willing, able & prepared to fire both of doctors (family & endo) IF they said one word against my diet. Fortunately, for them, they approved of it. Both asked me some inquisitive questions, but both congratulated me.

If I was to fire one or both, I was going to call doctors in my insurance plan and ask them about low carb/keto. If they gave me the wrong answer, I would move on.

I'm glad you told her everything and didn't hide it from her... I think it cool that sometimes a layman can know more than the experts ~ if they were taught wrong, or don't "grow" and learn new things.

I think its so cool that this group is like a bank of dozens of researchers combing the internet and sharing info they find, experiences with things they try, etc. so we all benefit from it! :)

She doesn't sound like the appropriate nutritionist for you. It seems you have found a good path that works for you so who needs a nutritionist :)

I was lucky, my endo is the person who recommended watching my carb intake because of possible IR. That was only four months ago, I swear that woman saved my life. I can't wait to go for my follow up at the end of the month.

Wow, that is really disconcerting that the nutritionist would be so against LC, even though there is a tremendous amount of evidence to support its effectiveness. Way to go in advocating for yourself!

RDs on protein powder..2 reasons they are down on it: (besides the fact they are taught to promote 45-65% carbs/grains.)

1.Americans overeat protein in general-200+ grs a day+ carbs too.…(not referring to LCers!)
so she discourages the guys in our group from adding it.

    2. Quality of Product Biggest reason…..the joke is on us for the zillion bodybuilder protein powders made of whey..it is a WASTE product* from dairy industry, and like the soy waste industry, the lobby found a way to promote to "health nuts"....and now I can find 12 DIFFERENT brands EVEN in the cheapo grocery (so much production it waters down to selling EVERYWHERE) all called "MuscleBlast", "RippedPro" "123SuperMuscle"…names like that. It appeals to younger men who envision 'bulking up'.

Tons of sugar/junk is added to make it like a McD shake..super sweet, careen added to thicken overcooked, etc.

So I did some research and there is a good study on the QUALITY and purity of ALL the various PPs…I chose Warrior Force..a hempseed+brown rice (tiny amount of carbs) PP…it is NOT over heated, or has colors, additives, sugars, AS, or any junk..and is sold in brown glass bottles for super 'purity'.

Also a whey called "Terra's Whey" is at top level. HempPro from Canada also good quality. Other more carby products too- pea, all brown rice, etc.

There IS a need for PP in the diet depending on the person and their needs….. (20 million Americans with Chronic Kidney Disease or other issues) and there are some better quality products, you just have to search for them..and buying at the gas station candy shelf is one tip it's not good. hahaha
    ++++++++++
    * OK I am glad they aren't pouring waste whey into the earth, but is can be used to feed pigs, and several other uses, NOT over processed for humans and sold as a trendy item for manufacturer's profit only.

Dr. Mercola has a good article on protein-"The Very Real Risks of Consuming Too Much Protein
    September 03, 2014
"On average, Americans consume anywhere from three to five times more protein than they need for optimal health, along with far too many carbohydrates and not enough healthy fats." < nice to see this

Ya know.. I have trouble trusting anyone that's into nutrition that doesn't like liver. Granted, I stay away from beef liver as it has too many carbs (I'm guessing from the animals glycogen stores) but I LOVE liver

Seeing her initially motivated me to stop indulging myself with foods that hurt me and to get back on track with LC/mostly keto eating that I love and seems to love me back.

@KETOGENICGURL - Thanks for the info on the protein powders. I will check them out. I have some brown rice protein [Rainbow Light] and pea protein [Garden of Life] that are ostensibly "healthy" for the public. They are chocolate flavored. I am going to test them on in about a week to see my reaction since I am sensitive to rice, peas, and chocolate. I want to have a couple of liquid days per week with protein shakes, chicken broth and other things as I think of them to give my intestines a break. If it works, I will cut down on my water fasting.

[This week my test is eggs!! - I cannot wait! I will try yolks and then whites separately. I am supposedly sensitive to these as well but not as much as other foods]

Omg. That's a dietician who is not up on the current research.

When I saw my doctor about the best way to loose weight he said cut bread, pasta, rice, noodles, potatoes, coffee, and corn. He also said to see a dietician.

She took one look at my food diary (on spark people), told me to change to mfp, and also said.
"You eat too much sugar and too many carbs. Doesn't matter that all your sugars are from fruits... It's too much. Increase your protein, limit your carbs, no more than 24 grams sugar a day. You'll feel better, loss weight, and not be so hungry."

Both of them told me to cut my carbs basically. I did it and feel a whole lot better. I am not as restrictive as some on here but I make sure to eat a whole load of health fat and protein.
The results speak for themselves so far.

I'm so disappointed that a health care professional was not up on all the latest research. But then I'm in NC where the bariatric programs (with their accompanying diet) are well researched and documented by Duke University. That's the info most dietician a around here go on.
