As a new member to the group, I would like to introduce myself. I am not new to SBD or MFP, but I haven’t been following either for a while. I just turned 57, found out I have no cartilage in the side of my left knee joint (bone on bone), and have a couple conditions which cause chronic pain. I feel like my body is really old. Heck, my 86 year old mother is in much better shape than me! I’m not complaining or whining, just stating facts. After consulting with a prominent knee surgeon, the good news is I am not ready for a knee surgery or replacement. Well, great doc, so what do I do about the constant pain? His answer: “Lose weight and it will help.” Gee, you think?! Anyway, that was a wake up call for me to get my butt (I would say a**, but I don’t want to offend anyone) in gear and get back to what I know works.

There is no way around it. I am a fat person. Morbidly obese in medical terms *cringe*. I’ve been overweight since I was 15, and probably like many of you, have tried almost every diet out there. The only success I had at losing weight was on another program (which promotes too many unhealthy food choices) when I lost 100 pounds, but I gained it all back and much more after a tragic event. I must get rid of 140 pounds. It seems SO insurmountable to me. I stepped on the scale on Monday and saw that I gained back 15 of the 35 pounds I lost over the past 6 months on a high protein/lower carb way of eating. Doing it “on my own” is really hard, so I am hoping to make some friends here on MFP.

In 2008, I had a really big scare when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. It was caught very early but the treatment changed my life and my metabolism. I’ll spare you the details but I am cancer free for going on 7 years. I realized how important my food source is. I changed my way of eating to eating as close to what comes from nature as possible. I have my own organic gardens and belong to an organic CSA. I enjoy home canning, so I can enjoy summer’s bounty in the winter. I do my best to avoid processed foods, GMO foods, but my downfall is I am a sugar addict. Trying very hard to break that.

Besides gardening and canning, I enjoy traveling, going to museums (history, science and natural), art galleries (love those Impressionists!), and the theatre. I also love being near the ocean or in the mountains. I live in Central NJ, so I can be close to both in a relatively short distance. I love learning about the cosmos, volcanos and other wonders of space and nature volunteer and am on the BOD for a local animal rescue group, and also do my own TNR (trap, neuter/spay, release) on our neighborhood feral cats.

Well, I realize that I have rambled on too much (I’m sorry!) and if you have read this far, you have my sincere thanks for doing so and for your time.

Hi! I just found you all today, so maybe there will be a trend of this group growing! Marillian, you sound like such an interesting person. Your interests are so varied!

Maybe I'll take your lead and introduce myself too.
I did South Beach in the past. I've never had more success with a "diet" than with South Beach. The problem was that then I was a stay at home mom. Being at home was every bit as stressful as working (don't let anyone tell you differently), but the stress was different, and I did have more opportunities to exercise and cook better. Things weren't as rushed all the time. It's funny--when you're home filling the time is stressful; when you work outside of the home, having no time is the stress.

So, I don't know if I can go through phase one again, but I think I'll at least try phase oneish with fruit. I have been doing MFP for a month, but I'm not losing weight. I know at least a part of it is due to insulin resistance. On the other hand, when I did SB before, I didn't count calories.

So . . . Marillian, you and I are in this together. Sabine, I've scanned your posts, and they're so helpful!! Thanks!

Howdy to the two new members...

Just will say I am cancer survivor (Ewings Sarcoma, bone cancer) 17 years ...and also bone on bone in both knees since 1983...still have my own knees...walking, peddling and swimming are my activities of choice now. 67 in October. B)

Eating SB has been a life saver...eliminating all the processed food is the best way to heal your body...(I go off the rails every now and then...)

BUT, posting menu daily has been really helpful and getting encouragement from Sabine means the world, since she is such a champ at this.

I highly recommend checking in daily, posting your menu in the "strolling" thread...I also, log everything only because it makes it easier to look back and see what really does work.

Wishing you all the best...it's really not about luck it is about planning and preparation.

PS I just finished watched HUNGRY FOR CHANGE on Netflix. Excellent and inspiring. Just an FYI :)
