RMR Testing & DEXA Scans

I swear, I'm such a stat nerd! I'm so excited, this weekend I'm getting RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) Testing to get an accurate picture of my TDEE, and then in two weeks I'll be getting a DEXA scan to get an accurate account of body fat% and lean body mass...and then thinking I'll do them both again in 6 months to see what my actual progress is and how things have improved. It'll also be nice to get a baseline for how far off my scale is at home with the body fat %.

Has anyone else ever done these? What did you think, and did it help you?

I am sooo jealous. Is this covered by your health plan or out of pocket?

@DittoDan did the RMR testing -- there's a thread around here somewhere.

DXA would be so cool. I got an NMR scan last year (don't ask), and I asked them for a copy of the data. I still go for a surf around my body once in a while. :)

It's out of pocket. Hmm, I mean I guess it could have been covered if I was medically supervised. But I'm not, and I found a great company in LA who does it cheap - $45 for the DEXA, and $75 for the RMR. I don't mind paying for it though, I think it's totally worth it for that price!

That's cheap! I just called a local imaging place, and they want $120 for the DXA. Still not a bad deal, but the mirror is free. :)

I'm on the fence about getting these done along with VO2 max and some other testing. My cardiologist has a whole program for people with ongoing health issues(plus athletes, those who are just overweight etc) so it would be covered by insurance for me. But the program comes with a nutritionist enforced diet plan and weekly weigh-ins which I don't love at all.

Let us know how it goes though! Wish I was in LA....

I wanted to try the DEXA scan but could not find a local place a couple of years back. I had not heard of the RMR test. $45 and $75 is very cheap compared to the $$$$ I have spent on prescriptions, doctors who tell me I am nuts, etc.

Now my focus is on inflammation reduction, rather than fat loss per se but I am very interested to hear about your experiences with the tests.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing! I'm anticipating I will discover something similar, I'm pretty sure my metabolism is a tad on the slower side unfortunately...

I would like to have both as well and find the subject interesting as well.

@toadqueen I had never heard of very Low Carb High Fat diets but stumbled into it when I was only looking for a way to manage my arthritis pain. Getting of sugar and grains greatly reduced my pain in 30 days and took away 40 years of IBS in about 120 days. In my case the automatic weight loss was a huge bonus but losing the pain joint and gut pain was Job #1 and 10 months later the old high pain levels have not returned and my general health is better than anytime in the last 20 years and I am under 200 pounds for the first time in 22 year.

@GaleHawkins - thank you. That is so encouraging. I have been in pain almost every day since 2011 and it is only worse since my car accident last year. I do not think it is fat although I am overweight. Congrats on your achievements. I remember when I got below 200 in 2009 for the first time in 20 years. A great feeling!

I have a scale at home that says what my fat % is but I do not think it is very reliable. Today I am 32.9% fat.

I found a place in CT that has a Bod Pod for fat analysis and supposedly RMR. Has anyone had any experience with this?

OP you got me excited too! I can't wait to hear your results.
