Swallowing difficulties and fibromyalgia

Hi my name is Joy I have fibromyalgia and gastritis. For the past year I have been experiencing swallowing difficulties. I chew my food very well but it gets stuck as it goes down. It started with dry food like chicken, fish and bread but is now happening with other foods with the exception of really sloppy foods like yoghurt and ice cream. The only way I can eat is to have a glass of water to hand and swallowing can be painful. I have had an endoscopy which showed inflammation of the stomach lining and I take lansoprazole twice a day. It has got to the point I don't want to eat. I have heard this is common with the fibromyalgia but I feel it is more to do with the gastritis. Any ideas before I have to resort to blending my food and eating baby mush, not an appealing thought.

I've never heard of this before in connection with fibro, but definitely could be a possibility because of the gastritis. Do you have esophageal reflux too? That irritates the passage and can make swallowing painful. Have you actually had a swallow test done? One lady on a forum had osteophytes which are bone spurs off the spine that jutted into the esophagus and narrowed the pathway. A specialized physical therapist can help with some swallowing difficulties. I used to work as a Physical Rehab assistant for people with brain injuries (not the same as what you described of course) and clients that had trouble swallowing did some exercises for those muscles involved and got some help from the speech therapist (it isn't just speech they help with, but all the interaction of the muscles in the throat and palate and jaw.) Might be worth your while to get testing done, and then some therapy if possible. Also ask your pharmacist (not your doc, they don't know much about drugs) if this could be a side effect of the lansoprazole, just on the off chance.

I receive different answers from different docs

    Xray show bone spurs

Ultrasound shows enlarged thyroid gland on one side

Well, there's nothing that says it can't be a combination..... Anything that can be done to remedy these issues?? Is it a thyroid tumour, or just an enlargement?

Interesting, I have found the same thing for some time. I just wrote at off. But I do have to be careful to half something to drink whenever I eat anything larger than a small snack. I might have to look into some of this.

I had an issue with my throat for a while. I constantly had to swallow because for some reason it felt like there was a huge lump in my throat that wouldn't feel relieved unless I did that. Mysteriously, it disappeared one day and I never had the issue since.
