22 Symptoms of Carbohydrate Syndrome

A post linking carbohydrate consumption to depression sent me looking for this article. One man's hypothesis. He makes some interesting observations. Of course many of these symptoms are shared by individuals who are not addicted to carbohydrates.

I have a close relative who has metabolic syndrome and has been addicted to carbohydrates for life. I tried to do an honest assessment of how many symptoms this individual exhibited-nearly 85%. Thinking I may have been too harsh, I sent this article to my sister and asked her to do an assessment of her own. We had no conversation regarding the study. She came back with 90%.

Hmmmph. Apparently...excessive carbs are bad for me. Go figure.

We're not discussing what I scored on that list...

I only had 11 of them, but I'm also ADHD and still have several of them even now. Bummer. I guess that's a sure sign my diagnosis is accurate and wasn't actually carb syndrome, which is good to know.

LCHF or Ketogenic diet, don't you think?

I think someone addicted to a HCLF diet and a magnesium deficiency would have BINGO!

Anecdotally, most of us who have been around for awhile are always seeing exciting ways that people's lives improve on low carb. Most of these sound familiar or make a lot of sense to anyone here on LCHF. I've never had chronic depression issues, but I've seen enough folks around here (and on reddit's keto sub) mention low carb helping their depression that I buy that. Many other things fit a basic "brain fog" feeling that is familiar to me.

A couple things on this list though, I've never seen anyone mention:

"Lack of empathy." - I wouldn't qualify here, as this has never been a problem of mine, if anything, I have too much empanty in many situations. But has anyone actually noticed this change on low carb?

"Internal restlessness and racing thoughts." - I've been posting a lot in the thread on mindfuness, and this is a common topic/question that I see mentioned when meditation is discussed, and a lot of mindfulness is about learning to deal with your internal monologue in a healthy way. So this is something I'm *very* aware of. In myself, at least, low carb didn't change this a darn bit. If anything, it cleared up the fogginess in my head that came with out of control diabetes and made me MORE aware of my racing mind. But it sure as hell didn't change this. Meditation has offered glimpses into how this could improve, but that didn't come until 15 months on keto for me. I don't think I've ever see anyone mention anything about their changes on low carb that would fit this category either.

Anyone have any experiences with either of these that seemed to come with low carb?

Things that stretch and go on to villify carbs make me wary

Lots of people eat normal amounts of plant based carbs with good health

I do. I eat my 80 or less carbs daily and feel great

If I exercise hard I eat 40 or 50 more

Metabolic syndrome is overweight, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetic

I used to have it and no longer do.

Diet exercise and weight loss fix it.

The inner feelings of self related to long term weight issues are pretty common. Bad inner dialog is a part of that.

I'm very cautious to scapegoat carbs for my personal issues

I think if you suffer insomnia, are depressed, anxious, have racing thoughts, aren't present and pain has become your best friend it is probably hard to fell empathy for anyone. If those other symptoms are resolved with a LCHF diet then you have a shot at feeling empathy for other.

I actually have one of those symptoms that us kind of weird-- it is about "hearing Lag" i.e. it takes me more time than usual to process what someone is saying and I have to ask them to repeat it sometimes. Peope say that I am not listening but I am--just takes me more time to "get it"-- anyone have this?

In terms of depression-- I think I was actually self medication with carbs to boost seronton levels-- not that I knew I was doing this. But when I eat carbs, I feel better-at least for awhile. Then of course, I crash:)

That's interesting actually. I had been LCHF for quite some time and decided last week that I could eat some carbs while my daughter is visiting for a few weeks. I've been exhausted, but I can't sleep.

I've tried this before with the same results, you would think I would have learned by now.

It's good to know that I'm not the outlier and it isn't all in my head.

Not to go off topic, but I invoke Special Snowflake Syndrome as the reason for me not learning. See, I really don't learn. I had a DNA test done, and one sequence of genes I carry... are you ready?... prevents me from learning very well from mistakes. I live in Groundhog Day Land. I said I'm a mess. :(

    :p

There's several of us who need a good whack upside the head to make us remember to eat what we know works.

And not eat what we know doesn't work! :D
