Hi all

I'm new to the site, well relatively, I did use it once before and loved it

Bit of background, I have always been slim, around 8 1/2 - 9 stone. Last year I developed an illness and due to being bedridden and comfort eating went up to about 9 1/2 stone. Got married in February and after over indulging on 3 meals a day for 2 weeks in New York ended up nearer 10 stone.

Come April I become pregnant and now at 22 weeks I am just under 11 stone. People keep telling me I haven't put that much weight on but that's because they are comparing me to this time last year when I was already heavier due to illness.

Ultimately my feel good weight is about 9 stone and that's what I aim to be after pregnancy. I just wondered if anyone had any advice in the meantime about the best way to lose the un-pregnancy related weight/slow down overall weight gain during the next couple of months. I am through the sickness stage that saw me crave sugary foods and would really like to get to a comfortable weight before baby arrives

Any advice would be very much appreciated

  • Hi Nicki,

For me personally, I set my diary settings to maintenance and I try to make sure I'm eating a balanced diet. Usually I eat at or slightly above my "goal" and I've been gaining nice and slowly.

There are several pregnancy weight gain calculators on Google that you can try which will give you an overall idea of how much you should weigh each week based off of your starting bmi. My favourite calculator is this one: http://www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html?ctype=standard&pstage=24&twins=0&cheightfeet=5&cheightinch=7&cpoundbefore=177.8&cheightmeter=165&ckgbefore=50&printit=0&x=73&y=11

Of course you should always consult these things with your doctor first.

    All the best!

Don't try to lose weight during pregnancy, but you can limit your weight gain so you have less to lose after you give birth. I'm overweight and my weight gain goal is 15-20 lbs, with no gain during the first trimester. 2 months after birth, I plan to slowly lose weight. 2 months at maintenance gives my body time to recover after the stress of childbirth, and slow loss maintains my reserves for breastfeeding.

Even though you can't lose weight for a while, there are other things you can improve. Avoid those comfort foods if your still in the habit of consuming them. Eat more nutrient rich foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish. Continue any exercise you were doing before pregnancy. I started a bodyweight program to gain strength for birth and baby care. However, it's a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Healthy eating and greater strength and endurance will help you lose weight later.

I know how frustrating it is to not be able to lose right away. For both my pregnancies, I got pregnant just as i became motivated to lose weight. Even though you have to put it off for now, you will lose weight in time.

I do the same as JustAnotherGirlSuzanne, set my calories to maintenance. I tend to go close to or slightly over my calorie goal (depending on how much exercise I do) and am still gaining close to the recommended 1 lb/week for my weight goal (25-35 lbs). Also I try to make sure I'm getting in a good amount of fruits, veggies and fiber each day.
