New to Keto

I just started the Keto diet on Monday. I cannot believe the changes in just 3 days. I'm on some kind of Keto high and feel really jacked up with more energy than I know what to do with. I am having some heart racing as well. Is this normal?

Also, today I noticed my urine smells like nail polish remover. It's darker than normal and I've always been pretty good about my water. I'm averaging 10-15 carbs a day and jut wondering if it's too extreme.

What are some warning signs I should watch for, if any? TIA!

Wow, you have a good nose! Nail polish remover = acetone. The stuff in your urine is mostly acetoacetate, but there's probably some acetone in there too.

Did you read anything before starting? Hopefully you did, and hopefully it told you that you'll feel like crap in a few days unless you consume about 5000 mg/d of sodium. :)

The palpitations are often a symptom of low sodium or another electrolyte.

Haha- yes, I do. It's both a blessing and a curse. I can smell a smoker from a mile away :s

I've read a little bit but wanted to get information from people who've actually done it and not just what the studies have found, kwim?

Dark urine can also mean you aren't drinking enough water to compensate. I find I dehydrate easier going into ketosis. So you might want to add more fluid. And if you start feeling cruddy a lot of people recommend salty broths.

You'll find many people here who felt like crap till they started choking down sodium. Welcome! :)

10-15g/d carbs will work fine, but you should up your protein intake a bit more than most if you want to keep it that low.

Is my diary open? I'm at about 85-90g protein. Should I do 100? More?

And I will do more of my own research once the kids go to bed. I can't really focus on anything else while they are awake.

I'm drinking about the same as before ketosis so that might be why. I will start measuring it and keeping track instead of just drinking what I think is good.

Your diary isn't open, but that sounds like a reasonable amount of protein unless you're really tall.

Ketosis is protein sparing, but below about 40g/d carbs, you'll need to convert some protein to meet your glucose needs.

I did around 90g/d protein, but I'd up it to around 120g/d if I were restricting carbs that low.

    I'm only 5'1.

Is the high normal? I seriously feel like a tweaker or something. How long does that last?

I think your protein is fine, then. The high is variable. Most people say it takes a few weeks before they feel it, but your ketone levels are obviously pretty high based on what you've described. Your brain soaks them up.

I think it varies greatly from person to person. Some never experience the high you are talking about; other do. For me, that "natural high" for lack of a better description/explanation lasted somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 MONTHS!!

Welcome to the group! It's great that you can smell the ketones in your urine! You will be able to tell if they aren't there, for sure! Please heed the advice on the electrolytes. An imbalance here, which will happen with ketosis, can wipe out that high you feel overnight. Read as much as you can! Don't forget the Launch Pad in this groups forum. Is a wealth of information these great people have compiled to help us get the best start possible! Best of luck!

I don't know if I want to interact with people willing to ask me how, though.

I never understand how MFP open diary works. I can never see anyone's diary unless we are friends. I think it's a glitch in their programming.

I think it used to work better before the takeover.

I think we are to watch posing negative MFP stuff in this sub forum. "Takeover" is a hot button word in some circles. As a software developer sometimes new changes takes some time to smooth out I know. :)

Are we sure that people are doing the open diary settings correctly? You need to go to settings at the top right, then diary settings and scroll down to diary sharing to change it to public.

Quick! somebody (who is not my friend) please check my diary to see if it is open. Then friend me. (If you want to.) :)
