This is not something I've added back in or plan to until I get closer to maintenance, which is worlds away still.

You may also want to try Kabocha squash instead of sweet potatoes. It's far lower in carbs and sugars per serving yet still has a sweetness to it that is reminiscent of sweet potatoes / yams. One note of caution though: these winter squash are VERY hard (dense) so they can be difficult to cut through. The easiest way to soften them up for cutting is to put it in the microwave with a little water and poke several holes with a fork in the outer skin so it doesn't explode. lol

I eat them once in a while. But I live winter squash so usually use that this time of year. Delicata squash is sometimes called sweet potato squash, though I don't think it tastes like it. It has a very light flavor and is easier to cut than other squash. It's great roasted with olive oil and salt.

I don't trust myself to eat the tiniest little bit of sweet potato yet. I ❤ sweet potatoes. Hopefully once I'm closer tongoal weight and start to increase my carbs I'll be able to have some.

if it were just roasted sweet potato I'd be fine, don't really care for them that way too much. the problem is sweet potato fries with cinnamon honey butter melted on top.

I wonder if I could do a sweetener cinnamon butter on top of my squash? hmmmm might have to try that tonight

No potatoes of any kind here. I don't want to find out how they would make me feel! That's enough for me!

Just as a technical note, sweet potatoes are not real "potatoes." They are called that because they act similar. But yeah, I'm with you on the carby bit - don't wanna chance it!

I add them in on days where it makes sense. For example, on heavy weight training days I doubt a cup's worth of sweet potatoes after training will go anywhere except muscles. I usually used to bake them but since trying to go very low carb 20-50g range, I've just dice and fry them on the cast iron with plenty of ghee. Because they are all chopped up it allows me to portion them out over several days so it's not a major carb load at once. And as I said, when I do eat them, it's usually right after training.

I eat sweet potatoes on days I do very heavy exercise (like cross fit w/ weights) or over 20 hilly miles on my bike. On those kind of days they don't set me off. I usually just cook in the microwave, and eat a half medium size w/ the skin, with a little salt, pepper and butter or coconut oil. They really don't set me off under these circumstances. I also love to eat them with a big green salad and cottage cheese.

I do love potatoes and sweet potatoes, I had some tiny roasted potatoes for supper tonight in fact. I'll have sweet potato fries once every 2-3 months since eating Keto. Yes it ups my carbs, but I enjoy a taste and stop at that and get right back on track. I think my fasting helps me stay on course too.

Certain foods I allow every now and then, like a bit of Haagen Dazs ice cream, or wine or dark chocolate, potato chips every couple of months. Having a taste ( I honestly had 2 Tbsp of ice cream the other day and logged it) helps keep me sane and stops me from desiring more. If I allow myself some here and there, I won't feel deprived and want to pig out. I also keep an eye on my goals, and stop at a small portion then get right back on plan.

I tell myself this is how I will manage maintenance.

Just FYI, to minimize the carb impact and "burn" your carbs, you actually need to consume them BEFORE training. After training, they don't go to the muscles at all, they'll be processed as normal. Just something I've picked up from our awesome carb cycling compadres. :)

Sweet potatoes has too high carbs for me on VLCLF <20g. I miss them but only eat low carb veges grown above the ground at present. I have shed 22kg (48lb) in 16 weeks so it works & really sweet potatoes is not worth mucking this all up and loosing the momentum. This is the longest I have stuck to any WOE.
I see sweet potatoes at moment as a treat that will blow out my carbs. Will wait for maintenance.
  • I am flirting with maintenance weight

I have experimented with adding back in some lower glycemic carbs like sweet potatoes

It has not been as good as expected

I have done better just eating more of what helped me lose weight for additional calories instead of eating the old higher carb foods in a side dish sized portion.

More of a good thing has been better than a portion of the bad old stuff

I did love sweet potato though.
