Weight gain after an indulgance

On Monday we had thanksgiving dinner and I stuck to grain free but my carbs were higher (still under 100). Anyways the next day I has gained 5 pounds which I expected. What I didn't expect is to be still trying to lose it 4 days later. I'm within 0.8 lb and I'm drinking a lot of water and peeing like crazy. So why does it take so long to lose it????

It depends.
For women it depends on where they are in their cycle. And some people just plain take longer to shed the water weight gain. I take a minimum of 4 days, and depending on the place where I am in my cycle and how much the indulgence was and what foods, it can take longer. I've heard of people who take a week or longer. Bleh. The body is SILLY. Hang in there and it will eventually go.0 -
5lbs weight gain in one day is water weight, which I assume you know.
Did you eat something salty? If so, that was responsible for the gain.
There's about a 4-day lag between intake and excretion of excess sodium, so it sounds like you're right on track.0 -
Fasting should take it off more quickly?0

It wasn't even anything crazy. Some (maybe 1/2 cup) sweet potatoes and some paleo stuffing which also had sweet potato.0

Let's look at your theory that it's the carbs. You ate under 100g, right? So if all of it magically went to your liver to restore glycogen stores, it's still 100g. Water binds at 3:1, so that magic refilled glycogen + water would = 400g.
Less than 1lb.
Carbs are evil, but they ain't magic.0 -
i.e. the scale is stupid.0

I take up to a week and a half, depending on if simple carbs were involved. Scale sucks, bodies are strange, biology of the human woman is scary as hell.0

Ha! A quotable quote if there ever was one! :-)

@sweetteadrinker2, you're studying bio, right?
I just did a little math, but I could use some independent verification, and you might like this.
Homeostatic level of blood Na+ is about 140 mmol/l.
How much weight gain would 1g of Na+ cause?
This is a cool exercise, because even google wouldn't tell me the answer.0 -
I'm definitely in the fast gain - slow lose camp.
I'm sure wab's explanation of the science behind it explains it more accurately.
For me,
1 day of high carbs 100> = 6 days of <20g carbs.
I just see what happens from trial and error and recording, recording..

<insert "watch me Nae Nae" song here> because that might just as well be what the heck you are talking about.....0 -
I'm (still) talking about sodium. My back-of-the-envelope math tells me that for every 1g of sodium we retain, we'll retain 310g of water. So instead of the 3:1 water increase for glycogen, it's 310:1 for sodium.
That may sound like a lot, but we don't eat that much sodium. So if it was just about sodium INTAKE, then you'd have to choke down 6g to gain 5lbs. But since carb intake does make a couple of sodium-related changes, we don't have to eat that much because we stop losing so much.
For my next trick, I might calculate how much sodium we lose due to ketone losses. Anybody want to beat me to it?0 -

I can see the math making sense from a general standpoint. Add in the typical hormonal flux per day of the month(average for the population), how carbs bind, and the ratio of sodium to carbs to starting weight/hydration level and we might get close to a formula! >.<0 -
Omg Im cracking up here.0

Threads like this help keep me on the straight and narrow.
I don't want to go through needless @#$@#%@#$ for the temporary "pleasure" of a carb "treat". Trying to change my mindset to not see food in general as a reward or carb foods in particular as a good thing that I give myself for whatever reason.
I still think the mental part is both the hardest thing about real change, and the most important.
And with the holidays coming up, this is more important than ever!!
Get a strategy - for your mind and for your eating. If not, you will crater and hate life afterwards.

LOL You all all are crazy in the best possible way!0

I love when Wab throws that stuff out here, trying to help us, but he is the only one who understands it (sorry Wab) then has to take the time to explain it to us! Ha! I think he does it on purpose, lol! We can all just be cray cray together! Lol! But, in a round about way, we may learn something we didn't know! Wab rocks like that!0

It's best to ignore me. I'm currently fascinated by the kidneys, and most people don't find kidneys very sexy.
BTW, I'm reading a great book about the gut. The author notes that when we start as a clump of cells, there are three hollow tubes -- one becomes the nervous system, another becomes the circulatory system, and the third becomes the gut. He complains that the first two tubes get all of the attention.0 -
Lol, you guys crack me up !0

I had a couple cheat days over a week ago and still holding firm and all I had was a couple glasses of wine and French fries-like a cup of them. 3 lbs up and I've only lost 1.5 of them. Doesn't it make you want to pull your hair out!! Hang in there. I know it isn't fat gain but still aggravating. And what's the alternative? To give up? No so just keep going.0

Also best to ignore me, the fact that I understand wab just proves it.0 -
I don't believe there will be any ignoring going on! I've learned so much from all of you! Keep putting it out here where we can take what we need from it! I think it's great and look forward to more challenging info!
Sorry OP!0 -
WAY over my head!!!!0

You lost me at math.
I forgot how to math.0
