Sugar alcohols net carbs

I'm so confused. Im wanting to have some compliant "treat" on hand for Halloween so I don't binge. I gave a major history of 10 pound weight gain during the month after Halloween and WILL avoid that this year. So I deduct sugar alcohol from the carb count right? I have no issues with sugar alcohol so that isn't a problem. So these would be 1 net carb?

Which kind of sugar alcohol? Different ones have different gi indexes. Malitol iirc is up around 40, and I would not count as zero carbs. Erythrotol on the other end I would count as zero for myself. Packaging will discount all of them fully. That is my understanding at least!0

Holy moly that's a lot of sugar alcohols! I don't count any of them if I'm having a 'treat' like sugar free candy. But that many would give me issues.0

I really don't care if it's a "clean food". Candy = crap. I just want something as a great for Halloween when we have a big party and everyone else is scarfing down chocolate bars. Just want to know if sugar alcohols are deducted from carbs0

Try looking at your grocery store (in WEIRD places they stash it) for Fifty-50 chocolate. I really like the plain chocolate. It is sweetened with Splenda and whatever isomalt is. The entire bar - a big one - is 21 carbs minus 3 fiber and 16 sugar alcohols = 2 net carbs if I count properly. At any rate, according to my glucometer, it does not raise my blood sugar. It tastes very good; I really cannot tell the difference between and normal chocolate. They also make a crunchy one but have not tried that. I did try some Russel Stovers sugar free. OK, but not for the price.0

Ditto what @radiii said above bigtime!! Erythritol is considered to be one of the better sugar alcohols and generally speaking goes through your system so quickly that your body has virtually no time to absorb any of the "carbs" it contains. The same cannot be said about other sugar alcohols. Erythritol is the ONLY type of food I count "net" carbs with period for this exact reason. Do you know if you/your body is sensitive to Maltitol? I hope you aren't. If you don't stick to the portion size suggested on the package you will most likely become very well acquainted with your bathroom. My body does NOT like Maltitol at all so I stay far far away from it!I suggest that you only count "net" carbs only for erythritol as far as sugar alcohol goes.

I just count all sugar alcohols as carbs.0

I think Maltitol should count for more carbs than the other sugar alcohols, I've heard/read about it not being the same as the others and having more carbs.0
-
So yes you're right about net carbs but instead of 1 net carb it could be more like 5. dunno how you really can accurately calculate stuff like that0

I personally would look at making your own fat bombs that fit this need. @DittoDan made/recorded several different options. My coworker makes chocolate peanut butter cups from PB2, butter, coconut oil, cocoa powder, salt, and stevia, and does it in layers. I've sampled one and it was quite good and satisfying... I doubt I could have eaten more than 3 of them. So automatic portion control, too.
I tend to shy away (read: RUNS SCREAMING IN ABJECT TERROR) from any sugar alcohols in foods like this... Google the sugar-free gummy bear amazon review if you really want to know why. Read at your own risk...0 -
Ok I can't help you on that but maybe a different thought process might help, I'm big on Halloween and Easter candy but I'm not willing to blow my diet for it so I'm trying to trick my brain into saying "the candy isn't going away just because Halloween is over, there will be all my favs still available in store when I get to a more maintenance level and then I will allow my self to have a small amount of the real stuff! I'm working on loosing now so not allowing anything to throw me off but it's coming off so fast I'll be where I want soon enough I can wait 6/12 months or so for that peace of candy0

Sorry @etta had to LOL - -"Peace of candy". ~Freudian slip.
And yea, I'm in your camp. 27g Carbs; 20g Polyols for 5 pieces = pass.

For me, sugar alcohols and too many nuts (4-8 ounces at a sitting) were what derailed me in the past from LCHF.
Fat bombs, etc can be a good thing... the can be, but they can also mess you up royal.
My sugar cravings are greatly decreased now that I am fat adapted, and I'm trying to turn to more fat or steak when I have sugar cravings and not just feeding them by artificial sweeteners.
That said, I'm still drinking diet soda...0 -
Um..... I sort of indulged in the very picture of which you posted this weekend. TV commercials of late have been NOTHING but Reese's, which are my favorite candy, and the cravings combined with shark week have been insane. It's the first time since I started I gave back into the sugar free candy urge. Let me tell you...... Maltitol is bad on the tummy. I'd forgotten how bad until I ate the serving size of the above and ended up on the toilet for 30 min (sorry to divulge TMI LOL). /hangsheadinshame.
Hey, at least it finally got rid of the water weight I'd been sloshing around. I lost a lb the next day. /shrugs
I do subtract the sugar alcohols and go with net carbs (yes, I count 1 net carb in your example), simply because the bathroom issue tells me it's not getting absorbed completely and I didn't go out of ketosis. It is definitely a YMMV thing.
There are a bunch of easy and quick keto friendly peanut butter cup recipes however if you don't want to risk it. I've made them a few times with erythritol/liquid splenda and they turned out okay. That being said, I can't tell a difference between the sugar free Reese's and the real ones, or at least a major one. Same with the york peppermint patty ones. The Hershey sugar free isn't very good at all and I'd rather just eat dark chocolate. Which come to think of it, that would be a really good candy option for you. You can get the Ghiradelli 76% and above in individual packs.Sugar content isn't horrid for one square and gets less the higher percentage you go.

The Ghiradelli 72% or 86% individual squares with a swipe of low-carb peanut butter might just do the trick!0 -
Malitol is high and my endocrinologist said I have to count 50% of the sugar alcohols as carbs. He would suggest counting 75%, but gave me some leeway because I've had bariatric surgery and don't absorb everything I eat.
I would absolutely make the "Mounds" fat bombs or a peanut butter chocolate bomb instead of eating anything with Malitol. I never ever had issues with malitol... until I did. And it wasn't pretty.0 -
I'd skip the malitol, fwiw, considering tummy trouble and that you can't count on it NOT being just passed through. But, I dropped the label info so you'd know for sure the sugar alcohols so you could make an informed choice. So it's up to you whether or not you still wish to indulge.
Personally, I'm making these:

or some LC sugar cookies with chopped pecans and chunks of 85% dark chocolate.KnitOrMiss wrote: »The Ghiradelli 72% or 86% individual squares with a swipe of low-carb peanut butter might just do the trick!
^Or that...doesn't get lazier. And it sounds delish.0
