My mom wants to lose weight...

My mom just told me she wants to lose 50 lbs. I obviously started on a rant about how great low carb I is and why she should try it. She's done Weight Watchers on and off for at least a decade and her biggest complaint is being hungry (surprise surprise). My mom isn't one for Internet research or apps like MFP so I need to give her some quick tips on how this works. SOOOOOO...

If you were to give a newbie just 3 bullet points on how to do low carb, what would you say?

    1. Cut out sugar, grains, and processed food. Eat real food.
    2. Keep a log and give it to your daughter so she can log your food for you on MFP. :)
    3. Double your normal sodium intake to avoid the "flu"

Yes, eat real food. Great one! She's terrible about that!

Eat healthy fats! Eating nuts, nut butters & avocado is almost impossible on weight watchers. It's going to feel "bad" like she's cheating. Reassure her that she needs to eat a lot more fat!

My absolute biggest piece of advice would be to give it time! I think a lot of people expect to feel miraculous and amazing right away and we all know that rarely happens. The carb withdrawals and the addiction to carbs can be quite bad so I wish I had know how bad it was going to be and had known it would go away in a couple weeks.

Fruit, contrary to popular belief, are not a good diet food. The Man still can't wrap his brain around that...

Would she read a book? I read this to start: The New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great, Dr. Eric C. Westman Dr. Stephen D. Phinney Dr. Jeff S. Volek. It explains WHY this works, which is important I think and makes it easier to stick to the do's and the don'ts.

    But here are my tips:
Cut out bread, rice, potatoes and pasta.
    Cut out sugar.
Drink lots of water, and broth (broth for replenishing sodium).

I wouldnt even go for a book. Print or type her a list of acceptable protein, fats, veggies. Pick one or two from each list type thing. Something simple like below.

Eat healthy fats to stay full.
    Drink lots of water.
Increase magnesium and potassium, especially at first since your body will flush those minerals en masse.

As a Mom myself, I think the biggest gift you could give her would be your time. Moms love to talk to their kids. Frame this as an adventure and agree to lowcarb along with her for a couple weeks(phone calls, recipe checks, that kind of thing). That will get her over the 'flu' and up and running to where she will keep on by herself with more confidence.
