So I am feeling a little lost. I am not sure if I am trying to do too much or what. I am trying to watch my sugar and my carbs at the same time, which nicely seem to go together but also feeling like it is a lot. The first couple of days I was feeling great, today I am tired and cranky and feel like giving up. I get overwhelmed easily by new foods and trying to figure out new things.
So I have been using Pinterest a lot to try and find some good meals and foods to make for both myself and my husband (he is not really doing this with me but will eat what I cook so I can work with that).
I feel like there are conflicting lists for what you can eat on LC, and I want to make sure I am eating the right things. Like if you can have berries is that all berries, what about nuts... can I have all nuts? That sort of thing.
I am not sure if this makes sense to anyone but if it does can you please help me out some more. You have all been so helpful already.
Thank you

It makes perfect sense. I can't respond with answers just yet as I am about to meet with the Navy recruiter with my daughter, but others will chime in soon and I'll be back to check in later.
In the mean time hang in there. You've been doing great this week. Don't lose sight of that.0 -
There are different methods, so I can understand why the confusion. I will tell you what I know about Atkins because that is the one I am most familiar with.
Atkins starts you off at 20 grams of carbs per day, initially you can't have nuts or berries. Then after the first few weeks, you gradually start increasing your carb level by 5 grams for a week and reintroducing things one at a time like nuts and then if you are still losing weight, you add in berries, etc. The idea is that you keep increasing the carbs to where you are still losing weight, this number is different for everyone. Some people can go up to 50-60-80 grams and still lose weight. Some people find they do best when they stay under 50 grams.
I am not that familiar with the other LC plans, I think you can have fruit and nuts on Paleo.
From what I have seen on this board, it seems that all the different methods work.
If you are tired and cranky, you might want to increase your sodium. When you do low carb, your body flushes out sodium at a very fast rate and you need to get a lot of salt to replace it. A lot of people here will drink broth or eat pickles to help that problem.0 -
You're overthinking it. Back off a little and go with the basics -- meat, cheese, and above-ground vegetables. Once you get used to the basics and get adjusted, then you can add things like nuts and berries in.
As for being tired and feeling like you want to give up -- you're right on track. Yep, that's right, it's part of the process.
You can probably mitigate a lot of the issues by being liberal with the salt. Use salted butter and add salt to your vegetables, for example. Drink some broth, and so on.0 -
I'm new-ish to this as well (although I've done a bunch of it in the past, it's been a while). First:
Breathe. Don't get too worked up about it, it's food - we can work with that. Second: Pinterest is excellent for recipes! Keep using it. Third: There are certainly a variety of ways to be low carb (read the post I just made about this problem - there are some good and handy tips in it). Each one is slightly different and some are more restrictive than others. You'll have to decide what's going to suit you best, though. Hang in there and take it a day at a time. The longer you do it the better at it you'll get. That's been my experience. When I did the Primal Blueprint (a sister to Paleo) I thought I was going to die. I never knew what to eat or how much - it definitely got so much easier. Just read the labels on things to get an idea of the carbs, that's a good rule of thumb. Google is your BFF.0 -
You are all so amazing! I tend to get really lost really quickly. I have a not so healthy relationship with food (not surprising since I am here trying to lose like 200 lbs). Having eating disorders most of my life have really messed with my ability to think of food rationally. I am working on this... The one positive thing I am finding is that I don't have to try and keep my calories low.. they are naturally kind of staying where they need to be. I like that. Also not dying of hunger all the time, or feeling the need to binge constantly.
I guess it is about doing more research and finding what is best and starting at the basics as was said. It is good to know that I am on track with tired and cranky. I have to say that I am happy because I have lost like 6lbs this week. I don't care if that is water weight it is still exciting to me.0 -
Just another little piece of advice, since you are not eating any processed foods and drinking lots of water you may be getting low on sodium. Have some of those bouillon cubes to get your sodium levels back up. It will get better too, just one of the symptoms in the beginning0

Keep going at it Rebecca, you are asking all the right questions and shouting for help when needed, which is often the hardest part.
I have been doing this for 10 days and everyone in this community have been great, they're all here to help each other.
Just take it one day at a time.0 -

That's what I love about low carb. You can adjust it to what works for you. Be diligent with your food diary so you can look back & see how many carbs keeps your cravings low. Also, I recommend Smart Water. It has electrolytes in it to help replenish what's being flushed out. We are here for you!!0

The chicken broth should help perk you up for sure. Getting salt is very important to keep you feeling good. You're losing a lot so it has to be replaced. I like pickles and olives too.
You can eat whatever you want except bread/grains, sugar, pasta and starchy veggies.
Any sugar you do get is best to be the small amounts of natural sugar in veggies and other low carb foods. I do have a little dark chocolate, 86%, a couple times a week with my carbmaster yogurt but that's about it for that kind of sugar.
As far as berries, (blueberries, raspberries blackberries and maybe strawberries) I haven't had them in forever, but I did have them more when I started out. I had a strict carb limit of 20g so I would have very few. The less you eat sweet things the more you tend to not crave them. At least that's what's most commonly experienced. So I would just be careful if you feel like it makes you want more or other sweet things too.
With nuts, I've found that pecans, almonds and peanuts seem to be the lowest carb. They do make the calories add up quick, but that's also why they can be a great snack when you may be having calories too low at times. They are also great when you want to snack and don't mind blowing calories but don't want to go carb crazy.
I find that keeping things simple makes my life easy and I know that's always been a factor in making eating this way successful for me along with everything else, of course. I'm not and never have been much of a "try new recipes" kind of person. I do that kind of thing rarely because I prefer to just season some meat, cook it simply, throw a salad together or sauté some veggies in butter and be done. Trying to cook from a recipe can be overwhelming for me, especially if I've been busy all day.
I think you've been doing great and making very good choices. And I think the carb blues got to you today. It happens. The salt will help and you're on your way to fat adaptation which will help a lot.0 -
I use Pintrest a lot to find recipes .. Most are good others you can tweek yourself to your liking ... My favorite low carb recipe is the pizza also called the meatza .. Don't give up0
