Scale going up but in ketosis and tracking calories

I've been in ketosis for a few weeks and I've lost 19lbs. But this week the scale seems to be creeping up. I think it's because I am not getting much water at all and its TOM. But I want to be sure I'm not missing something.

I've tracked and stayed at my calorie deficit and most days below 20 net carbs. (And my calories aren't too low overall. I average 1200-1700 depending on the day. I have over 100# to lose)

    It could definitely be TOM, and make sure you stay hydrated. I've only been doing keto for 9 days so I'm definitely no expert but I'll chip in my two cents anyway. ;) My TOM started (early!!) late last week and the scale went up at first, but then dropped several pounds as TOM started winding down.

    I know it can be a bit distressing when the scale goes up instead of down. You have a lot to lose, so you'll lose quite fast compared to people who don't have as much to lose, so that could certainly compound the distress. Providing you're logging correctly (using a scale and logging everything), you don't have anything to worry about. :)

    I retain 3-5lbs of water during TOM. I will also (seemingly) randomly retain water at times. I made four trips to the bathroom last night to pee out two days of mysterious bloat. Constipation can also have an effect on the numbers on the scale, too.

    I'm weighing/measuring/logging everything. From 4 French fries to 5 raspberries. And I seem to be ok potty wise...was stopped up but salad helped!

    I agree. I wouldn't worry much. I had weeks where I went up a few pounds and they were often followed by quite a dip. Just wait it out. :)

    Week to week scale business, especially for women, will get squirrelly. Weightloss is not linear. There will be pauses, and sometimes flat out rapid bounces. If I have 500mg too much salt, I can gain 2lb in 24hrs. I can lose that in less than 24hrs or it takes longer. These days I go weeks at a time without a loss before I get a whoosh. Just Keep Calm and Low-Carb On.

    I agree weightloss is not a straight down line. It took me 6 weeks to lose 2kg and then I gained back 1.5kg over the next two weeks. It happens all the time.

    Even at my most successful time of weight loss, the week-to-week numbers didn't move much most of the time. I ended up with the following pattern:

    Week 1 - Gain 1-2lb
    Week 2-3 - Remain stable
    Week 4 - Drop 5lb suddenly
    Lather, rinse, repeat.

    Yeah, would have drove me bonkers had I not known what was going on and didn't already have a history of weight loss that couldn't be measured even on a weekly basis.

    A 4 pound range is normal based on water content varies. If my weight is 200 then a 202 or 198 means nothing as long as one is bouncing on either side of 200. Actually I can up to 205 and back down to 195 and back to 205. That is not typical but it happens in my case.

    Sometimes you will see a loss of inches and nothing on the scale. It doesn't always seem to make sense, but it's good that you are also measuring. My weight fluctuates 3-5lbs for TOM, bowel issues or for no apparent reason at all! Makes me crazy! But it's just normal. I'm sure our weight did the same back when we weren't watching it so closely too.

    As you can see from the responses, it's normal for this to happen! I'm also glad you are measuring. Inches lost will trump the scale, imo. Do not base your motivation on the number. Go with how you feel and the loss of inches. :smiley:

    Right now I'm up about 3.6lb. I did cheat on Saturday. But it won't turn loose for some reason. I'm betting it will finally randomly go in a few days. Just in time for the next hilariously absurd episode of "What's My Scale Doing Now?" It's like a drunk cat on a trampoline...rolleyes_2011.gif Then it passes out and lays there for awhile. Le sigh...

    I find when mine goes up for a few days it will fall almost double what I gained so it all evens out, don't stress when it goes up if you know your doing everything right but if it goes up and stays up you might want to look at what your doing. It's not just carbs for me it's sugars! So watch them suckers lol

    I gained 4 lbs and I've been stuck there for a week, seems to be constipation and water, at the same time I dropped another pant size. It might have been triggered by a unusually high carb day, ate something that I should not have, followed by a low carb/high protein/low calory day.

    In theory I should 5 lbes in the next 2 days.

    But yes, especially at first my scale didn't move much, it would just keep going up and down the same couple of pounds. I think it was about a month before the low number on the bouncing scale started creeping downward. But I would still get the up/down range going on.

    I'm really appreciating this thread. I'm only three weeks into this WOE and I've lost 6 lbs and gained 3. So the net lost is still pretty good. And what @baconslave described about the scale is hilarious. It's exactly how I feel every time I hop on it. Haha!

    I have to make fun of it. My scale is absolutely on my *kitten* list right now, so I'm not going to put up with its tantrums. We have enough problems. The dust will settle, and it will show a loss eventually. The scale can't tell you when you've replaced fat with muscle, or if your fat cells have deflated and are just holding water. Or if you've just had a tad too much salt or have some inflammation due to exercise or a food sensitivity. It's a dumb machine only good at measuring one piece of a complicated puzzle. But we give it too much credit and power over us. It's just a tool, and not always a very good one.

    But the long term is right on track. Sticking to it and being consistent will pay off. You might just have to wait a bit for it. :)

    I too have been bummed when I see the scale go up instead of down, but I know eating "more" won't help so I just keep plugging away.
