Week 4: still bloated, gassy, miserable.

Title says it all. I feel like utter crap, and nothing my nutritionist is suggesting is working, so I'm turning to you all for advice.

I'm not tolerating any of the protein shakes or powders (I've tried milk based, whey, whey isolate, soy and egg based with no success). I've even tried a few days recently with no "artificial" protein and attempted to get everything through my diet. Sadly, no luck. I literally wake up bloated and gassy, spend much of the day running to the bathroom, and then go to bed bloated and gassy. I'm having a terrible time getting my fluids in because I'm SO bloated all of the time, and when I do get on a roll (about 5 oz an hour), the bloating gets much worse and I start having random pains in my abdomen area - usually in 3 or 4 typical spots - which I assume is gas.

At this point, I'm hovering around 50 oz of liquid a day. Yesterday I managed to get in 57 oz, and went to bed feeling like I was about to explode. I live on Gas X, even though I don't think it helps too much. My nutritionist and doctor just keep giving me a variation of the "hang in there it gets better" speech, which I'm seriously doubting at this point. And considering I spend my entire day valiantly sipping liquids in an attempt to stay hydrated, if one more person tells me to "sip sip sip" I'm going to punch them in the face. OK, I won't really, but I wish I could.

What does one do when you don't tolerate ANYthing? "Going back" a week wouldn't help me at all; I was much sicker on the liquid only diet when I was forced to drink all of the shakes. Does this truly, really, ever get better? What else can I do to improve this situation?

You poor thing! I wish I had some awesome advice for you, but gasx strips helped me tremendously. I found that it was artificial sugar or color in jello that destroyed me. I quit jello and have been pretty gas free. Sugar alcohols also cause these symptoms quite often. I hope that you can get some relief soon.

Ps: love your sense of humor. I too have come close to punching someone in the face over comments lmao

Oh I'm so sorry for how your feeling. The only thing that I can suggest is a few home remedies that I have used for gas in the past. In the morning before you eat anything drink a glass of warm water with a TBS of lemon juice. It would also count as you liquids. I dont know how it works but it does for me. Ginger or peppermint tea may help also. Maybe someone here with more experience may be able to help. I hope that it all works out soon for you.

Beano Meltaways. For some, GasX simply doesn't work. I was one of them. 2 Beano Meltaways before I ate and drank anything and boom, bloating done. I will say that post-surgery, I tolerate grains even less well than I did pre-surgery. Now, pretty much every grain but rice kills me and sometimes rice isn't too kind either. Those things will change after surgery. I highly suggest you begin an elimination diet and find the culprit, because it may always give you problems. It sucks, but do it anyway.

First, get the Beano Meltaways. They're cheaper as a 4-pack from Amazon than buying single boxes in the store. However, you should go right this second and buy a box and start using them. At the beginning, I used 1 before I ate/drank anything, which means I was using 2-4 a day. Now, it's only when I'm planning to eat something that I know might give me issues, like our planned sushi for Saturday night. I'll be eating a Beano first.

Once you're doing them for 4 days, do an elimination. Drop out everything except broth and then add things back one at a time over a 4 day period for each food to see if you notice any changes. It could just be the shakes. Use a different powder or try a different brand. I went from Bariatric Advantage to Bariatric Fusion to Muscle Milk over 11 months. When I could no longer tolerate one, I found something else. Again, that's typical post-surgery. Because I would use the elimination diet, I knew what was causing the problems.

Drop out all foods except chicken broth. It's pretty neutral to your system. Then add foods. To try a new protein product, I went back to chicken broth only and added in that new protein. When I found one I liked, I kept using it and slowly added back the foods I'd been eating. I found a couple of "quiet culprits" by doing elimination diets. I keep notes on them and try them occasionally to see if I can tolerate them again. A couple of them, yes. A couple, no.

You are an ongoing scientific experiment. You are your own guinea pig. Experiments can be painful, but not experimenting can be just as painful. Better to know than to wonder.

I had the same reaction to all of the protein shakes, and I tried four different powders and three different canned ones. Total. Utter. Nausea. The only thing I was able to tolerate at all was the Isopure non-flavored powder. I would take it and make fruit smoothies with it to get it down (nothing too acidic - I stuck with bags of frozen berries like strawberry, blueberry and blackberries) or I would stir it into my blended/strained soups. It's not truly non-flavored (you can't mix it with water, for example), but it masked in with strong flavors like the fruit or soup really well.

As for gas and bloating, I'm no help but it looks like you've got some awesome advice above. I would also talk to your doctor and see if they can give you a prescription for Prilosec. I have a friend who had sleeve done in October 2013 and he has to take one daily for gas/heartburn.

Thanks everyone. I talked with my doctor today, and I'm talking with my nutritionist again on Monday. I completely agree with the elimination plan, but I'm consuming so little food right now (lucky if I can hit 400 calories a day, and most of that is from the dreaded protein shakes) that I have very little to eliminate. I will definitely try the Beano meltaways and see if that helps any! I am already on Prilosec, quite a bit actually, because I've had wickedly awful acid reflux since Day 1 after surgery. I couldn't even sleep the first week because the flares were so bad. That, at least, has gotten much better, although I still can't drink plain water without causing a flare.

You may want to try some propel or crystal light in your water to see if it helps. My mom had an RNY about 8 months before I had my sleeve, and to this day she cannot drink water straight, it makes her nauseous. Add a bit of propel to her water, and it goes down fine. No idea why, and she doesn't need it full strength (adds 1 sleeve of flavor to a 24oz water bottle), but it really helps her. I on the other hand, can't stand any flavor in my water at all. We're all different, which sucks when you're struggling as there is no magic fix, but I hope you start figuring out what works for you.
