My mom was diagnosed with Hyprothyroidism today. She had an appointment with her doctor for lab results from a couple of weeks ago. She's been doing LCHF with me for the past 14 months and has seen some excellent results (lost 50-60 pounds; has been taken off all T2 Diabetic meds, all high blood pressure meds, off the water pill and cholesterol meds reduced to only 1/2 pil per day)l. About a month ago she decided that she wanted to get serious again and buckle down (she "cheats" fairly often) because she wants to lose more weight...except she has made virtually no progress and neither she nor I could figure out why. Now I guess we know why!

Why did I post all of this...? Well, I know some of you out there MFP LCHF-land also have Hypothyroidism from reading your posts. So I'm looking for suggestions as to how to help my mom handle this. We do use a seasoning called "beautiful world seasoning" on and in much of our food. BWS contains granulated kelp seaweed which is a good source of iodine. I believe my doctor will be putting my mother on a prescription for the hyprothyroidism but I don't know the name of the medication yet. What are some things she / we should be aware of or watch or for? Thanks...

The medication will likely be Synthroid. It's a synthetic thyroid hormone replacement. The hardest part will be finding the balance where it works and she feels the best. Will just take some time, and tweaking of the dose. It's been used for a very long time with good results. Best to your mom!

My most recent bloodwork results showed that I needed to increase my Synthroid (generic is levothyroxine) dosage, too. I found out that leg swelling out of nowhere is a HUGE sign that you need to adjust your thyroid dosages. Know that for some people just adjusting the dosage isn't enough. My bloodwork showed that my thyroid levels had returned to normal, but I had no symptom relief. I had to add a Iodine/Iodide supplement to feel better, and now those levels are crazy high, so I'm having to get back off of that, because too much Iodine can actually trigger hypothyroidism to flip to being an autoimmune form in susceptible folks...

www.stopthethyroidmadness.com shows some great recommended testing, as well as reasons to take different types of medication. If my labs show a drop or that my increased dosage isn't as effective, I'll be talking AGAIN about switching back to a naturally desiccated form, which originally did not help... (I was taking a low dose of Armour, which I now know should have been upped and adjusted for symptom relief, and I didn't get to that point ever...my endo at the time, who basically told me I was fat and lazy and didn't have a thyroid issue, despite my PCP having 5-7 years of data showing the steady decline of my thyroid function, because I indicated the medication didn't seem to be helping, obviously it was in my head (yes, I fired him after that single appointment)... Make sure she has an endocrinologist, not just her PCP assigning dosages - too many factors! Nothing about your thyroid management is simple...

I'm finding out now, with these newly developed migraines, that seaweed in seasoning, such as what you mention above, is actually a variation of MSG - well, seaweed is where MSG was first derived from, which can negatively affect hypothyroidism, as well as many other things, so just watch for that....

She needs to take iodoral, the best and strongest iodine tablet.

I've been on Synthroid/Levoxythyroxine my whole life, well since the age of 7. It's really important to be on the right dose of medication or you can experience tons of symptoms even so with the right dose. To be honest being hypothyroid can suck at times and it's really a temperamental thing. Some symptoms to watch for or may have already been experienced are hair issues, fatigue, body aches and pains, depression among many more.

I am hypothyroid as well. I actually have hoshimoto's and am dealing with thyroid cancer. one big thing, be consistent with when the meds are taken. I take mine at night two hours after any food and no calcium rich stuff in four hours. Coffee impacts absorption as well. A lot of people take it first thing in the morning, but I get up to early and want my coffee right away. The thing is, to get her to the right level, she needs to be consistent with whatever she decides to do.

Do a Google/YouTube search for GAPS Diet or Microbiome diet. Its in the gut flora.

    Google: hashimoto's gut microbiota

Hypothyroid here, too. I just take the Levothyroxine in the morning and don't eat for an hour. I also avoid grapefruit. This VLCHF WOE is the only diet that's worked for me since my diagnosis 2 years ago.

She is doing pretty good actually. I told her to go to an endocrinologist because they allegedly know more about Hypo than GP's so she did. The Endo looked at the amount of the prescription that the GP gave my mom and said that the only change she would make would be to reduce the amount of the RX by half. So mom's been taking the new prescription and doing okay. It is currently the only medication that she is on and sorry but I don't know the name of the stuff. Mom was finally taken off of the last 1/2 pill daily for cholesterol mid last week (YAY). She has not been able to lose any more weight; however, she cheats several times a week that I'm aware of. lol Aside from the lack of additional weight-loss, she is doing very well indeed!

I'm so thrilled to hear that there is some good progress here. Maybe once she fully levels out, even with the cheating, she'll start to see some scale changes. We all know how motivating that drop anything over a whole pound can feel!
