Unjury questions

OK, so now that my stomach can handle protein powder, I am trying to find a way to make it not taste gross. I've tried the flavorless Unjury and Isopure. The Unjury certainly is less terrible, but I can still taste it in my milk/crystal light. I baked some of the isopure into some all-bran muffins and it was undetectable. I think I can use twice as much Unjury next time I do that since it's only half as gross tasting.

What else do you guys do that is not a liquid but that you can get some powder in? I only drink water, crystal light (actually it's Morning Spark, but same thing really) and milk, no shakes, and none of those work. Has anyone tried blending it with peanut butter? Maybe in with some chili? Any other creative ideas?

PB2 is a great powder peanut butter blend. I use it in a ton of stuff where peanut butter would normally be my default. Also, back when I HAD to use the isopure to get in enough protein, I used to use it to make berry smoothies (raspberry, strawberry and blackberry freezer bag blends) and it was undetectable. I would also blend it into my pureed/strained soups but I could always taste a small hint of it.

Pro tip - do NOT try it in jello. It ends badly.

lol. Good to know. I wonder if it would work in sugar free pudding? I'm looking to use the Unjury or isopure rather than pb2. I might be able to work it into a shake on a heavy workout day when I had some extra time but looking for something that fits into my normal day routine better than a shake. I think my biggest problem is that I like bland food and its really spice that covers it up best. I wonder if it would work in ketchup. Like not a whole scoop, but a half scoop maybe?

I have never had a problem with the taste of the protein powders, so perhaps my suggestions won't help. I mix powders (both chocolate and vanilla types) into Greek yogurt and it comes out very reminiscent on cheesecake to me. I also mix into oatmeal (must be on the cooler side to prevent clumping/denaturing). Those two mixins were my main uses of protein powder at work in both my pre- and post-op diets. Most of my protein powder intake now is in coffee (make a slurry with water or a small amount of milk and then make a K-cup of coffee into the slurry stirring continually to prevent clumping).

I hope you can find a way to tolerate the powder, because it is the best way for me to reliably keep my protein up without drastically increasing calories.

I tried it in yogurt but had the same response as with the milk. I'm eating plain yogurt and unflavored powder though, so I can see how that is different. The isopure tastes bad. The unjury isn't bad but it is different and I find myself not finishing things I've put it in, which defeats the purpose really. I don't like cheesecake or coffee (I know, I am weird). I might could try some oatmeal... maybe baked into oatmeal like I bake into the all bran? Generally the all bran is going to be more useful than oatmeal though, since it is fortified. Maybe... spicy guacamole!

I believe it was renaejae that recommended Musclegen Genepro. It is the best protein I have tried. It has 30g of protein in a Tbs and has the least taste. I can actually mix it in coffee and not notice the taste. I can't wait until I use up my huge canister of unflavored Isopure to order more Genepro. The frugal part of me knows if I order it now the Isopure would never get used. You can order samples on their website or a canister from Amazon.

I know I can use the isopure and the unjury in baked items and it doesn't really go bad very fast. If this stuff works I will be so happy. I'd even be ok with 1/2 scoop and if the scoops are only 1 tbsp - sounds promising! Even if I can taste it I might be able to just put it in a shot of juice and down it as opposed to having to choke down 12 oz of something I don't like.

Right after surgery powders made me so ill and this is the only one I could tolerate. I also like the small amount needed. Hope it works for you as well. I also started with a sample because I didn't want to end up with a bunch of stuff I didn't like.

@blairmundy, I would think the Isopure would probably blend well taste-wise into sugar free pudding but I'd make sure you combine it well so you don't end up with clumps.

I never would have dreamed to try it in ketchup, but I don't usually eat enough ketchup on anything that would have been enough to blend in. The vinegar in it should certainly cover the taste, though, I would think.

Ketchup is my weakness. And I'm ok with the sugar because it helps me get protein I wouldn't otherwise get. But yeah, I'm only eating an ounce or so of it so it might not be best.

Heinz sells a reduced sugar ketchup that is pretty good if you are worried about it, I can't tell the difference. My hubs is the real ketchup guy and he likes it.

Unless they are disguised, I hate the taste of protein powders. The quick combo that works for me is one scoop (technically just half their serving size, but it has 25g protein per scoop) Isopure Zero Carb Creamy Vanilla, one tablespoon powdered peanut butter, one teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder (this helps cut the sickeningly sweet taste of the protein powder). I put it in a shaker with one of those wire mixing balls, water and ice and keep shaking/drinking it on my way to work.

I have been noticing that most of the powders taste sweet also post surgery. I have tried the Unjury unflavored in Greek yogurt with one Splenda and then I have tried the Unjury chocolate in vanilla pudding (pretty good). I also just tried (today) --- mixing 1.5 scoops of Unjury unflavored with two Crystal Light lemonades and one tablespoon of Realemon juice with one bottle of water. The lemon juice helped cut the sweetness and it was actually pretty good.

I'm a big fan of the Genepro too. I often mix it in with soup- in creamy soups it really is totally undetectable. I've also been known to mix it into my kids' blue box macaroni and cheese to give them some decent protein with their carbs and sodium ;) Neither kid has noticed at all. I've also successfully mixed it into spaghetti sauce for them, which could give meatballs an additional protein kick if needed.

Finally got my Musclegen Pro sample and I was not disappointed! This will totally work for me. It does do a thing where it separates if it sits in the drink for more than 10 mins or so - and it somehow causes the crystal light to separate as well which is weird. But I have it in a clear water bottle and I can just shake it up and it re-mixes. No taste/texture at all until maybe the very last sip and even that was 10x better than any sip from unjury or isopure. Woooo! And thank you so much Tawnykakers1 and renaejae!
