as I am only 10 lbs away from goal weight I've got a wall! I cannot be anymore strict on myself. I fast for breakfast and lunch and eat a low carb supper. I'm thinking about going out on a serious cheat weekend and diving back into it. What is your thoughts on this tactic?

Define "wall."0

At your same spot, I tried the same.
It worked to break a stall. My stall was about 6 -8 weeks. I don't remember specifically. I did about 6 months of off-again/on-again stalls. That's normal for being so close to goal.
You need to be careful though not to let the cheat weekend 1) turn into a cheat week or 2)turn into a regular weekend ritual.
Just because it MIGHT work the one time, because our bodies do need a shake-up sometimes, I found that it did not work for me on successive attempts, like CarbNite-one night a week cheat then keto the rest of the week.
And remember that you'll have carb-flu, increased cravings after for awhile, water weight, and maybe gastric issues. If you can handle that and keep chugging on mentally unscathed, that's fine. Remember the above though, that it might not work next time or ever again.
I set myself back weeks, succumbing to the lure of a carb nite. My weight only came down the morning of the next CarbNite. And most of the time it wasn't a "new low." The yo-yo back and forth was stressful. The cravings....LORD!
In other words, don't do it if the doing is going to set you back in the long term only for a short-term result.0 -
It's always hardest to lose the last few pounds. Your calorie needs decrease as you lose body mass - simple, inescapable physics. Don't cheat. If you want to shake things up, you could try 3 meals a day with a calorie deficit for a while.0
-
I ate a chocolate covered donut and my body is freaking out! I guess it's the sugar! I haven't ate sweets since dec 6th! I'm literally shaking!0
-
I'm sort of in the same boat. I'm 5'2" and on a board called Petites in Maintenance. Until I saw the math broken down, I don't think I realized how long it would take to get the last few pounds off.
For me, this woe has as much to do with emotional sobriety & food as it does with nourishing my body. A cheat weekend is detrimental to my psyche, so it's not worth it for me.
With all that fasting, if you want to try shaking up your routine how about eating more often, but keeping it low carb?0 -
I've used carb re-feeds to break through a mini plateau before. I limit them to about 3-4 hours and eat whatever I want..with a few drinks in there(it's usually Friday or Saturday night) and it worked for me as long as I got right back on the horse the next morning. By Wednesday of that following week i'd be down on the scale again. You have to be able to resist the temptation to keep eating 'bad' though and that's not for everyone.0

I agree with eating more often but keeping it low carb. Experiment, see what happens. I also second what baconslave said, the whole cheating with higher carb thing doesn't work all the time and can turn out detrimental.0

Well I did it. Total gain of 7 lbs! Going on a 5 day egg fast see what happens!0

Well, good luck! I hope it works for you.0 -
I have remorse and more so when I started my period this morning and know that probably had a lot to do with my stall but what's done is done. So here's to experimentation!0

Alternately, instead of tweaking calories, you could change the energy balance on the workout side. If you do steady state cardio, add in some HIIT training. Switch up your routine.0

Note: I say the following because I support success, not for any other reasons. Your post reminds me of dozens (literally) of similar posts I've seen on here. It represents a fork in the road, a hard decision for most to make.
Starving yourself and dietary extremes are not the answer. They actually will make long-term success harder to achieve. You're stressing your body out and setting yourself up for a fun "recovery" period when your body actually has access to nutrients again and will repair all the damage you've done.
You had no sweets since December 4? Is this to suggest that you've only been dieting since that time? You only joined MFP in November, so it probably wasn't too much longer than that. You're 10 pounds (4.5 kg) from goal weight and not happy because your body is taking time to get there? You're starving yourself all day (no lunch or breakfast). I have done IF myself (eating one meal a day or during a 4-8 hour window), but I highly doubt you're trying to maximize that eating window based on how you described it.
Now you're going to try an egg fast? Look, eggs and butter are delicious, but you're at the wrong point to be doing crazy stuff like that. The last 10 pounds is when you should be developing long term eating habits that reflect those you'll practice in maintenance. You should be eating regularly. And eating as many meals as you plan on eating at your goal weight. For me that is 2 as I don't like eating until about noon. If you like eating more often, you should be. Your calories should be close to your calories at goal (within about 250 calories of your estimated TDEE at goal). You meals should be representative of how you plan to eat the rest of your life. Sliding into maintenance takes some time, but it also is where long-term success is built.
With some rough estimates, you should probably be aiming for at least 1,500 calories a day, of balanced foods that represent your ideal future diet. Don't skimp on the protein, you don't want to lose lean body mass.
It is better for those 10 pounds to come off in 5-6 months and to stay off than it is for them to come off in 4 weeks and leave you in worse health.0 -
^^^^agree wholeheartedly with #fit_goat. I am around 13 lbs from goal and it's taking forever...but since I want this to be a lifetime goal I'm willing to go slow and steady. Look more towards your long term goals rather than your short term goals
and honestly once we get through winter things will start moving again in the right direction.

FitGoat for the win! You just made my heroes list.
And that is why cheats terrify me. Instead of 10 lbs to goal I'm now 17. I'm like an alcoholic deciding to get hammered to ?????? Yo yoing and waking up in a carb induced fog 6 months later with depression and self loathing is a cycle I am done with. "Hi, my name is Tom and I'm a carboholic."
I get that not everyone here is in that place.
350 lbs and morbid obesity kind of color your world a bit differently.
Keto is a lifestyle for me, not a means to a number on a scale. Patience will do for now.
Not everyone has those goals or perspective - especially here. I get that.
So, here's a few questions I ask myself - am I getting adequate protein to maintain muscle mass? How about meal spacing? Do i know what Muscle Protein Synthesis is? Have i made it work in my favor? Are my carbs still below 20 total? Are my fat grams too high? Any other foods out of whack? Dairy? 500 calorie BPC? How's my body? Fat %? Patience? Can I see 1 year out? 3? 5?
A long term perspective will quite literally save your bacon!
I ask those questions first, carefully step into the answers, and leave the carb binging for others.
YMMV0 -
I hit a stall at about 15 lbs above my goal but it was because I was eating more and my carbs ad crept up. I cut carbs and tried a short fast and I dropped another few pounds but it was not something I could stick with.
I find my appetite is up now. I am no longer satisfied with the 1500 kcal I was eating for the period of time where I was losing well. I am hungry if I eat that so I eat more. I know eating more will slow that last 10lb loss way down but I don't want to fight my body right now. Instead I have moved towards cutting carbs further but keeping calories to where I am satisfied.

@fit_goat speaks words of wisdom. I understand the wanting to reach your goal, but do it in the healthiest way possible.0

Its definitely not starving myself.... I have no food cravings at all... However my time of the month screws everything up which I feel was partly to blame for this. I did low carb for 2 years then became pregnant and gained a lot. Not to mention having to get my thyroid removed. This is me trying to get rid of the pregnancy weight. I am experimenting with new types of low carb so... Thanks for the downer...and attempting to single me out... I really felt like this group has been a diamond in the rough... Friends that I could rely on... Although u are right about transitioning into a more maintaince goal. That I believe is going to be the most difficult.0

I reread all of the posts after I went to church and really tried to keep an open mind. And many of you are right. And I know that now. Since so many ppl have this problem then I'm glad to be made an example of for others. I seriously thought about leaving this group but I have learned so much and had a lot of success. Just keep in mind that all of us have the same goal and we should always be encouraging. You never know what people are dealing with. I look forward to this group so much and yall are literally my only support system. Thanks for all of you that have been encouraging. I went to my ob on Friday and got some of my problems worked out. I'm already down the 5 lbs I've gained. I decided after reading these posts to not do the egg fast. I will start leaning toward maintenance which was my plan before my stall. Thanks again! And keep on keeping on.0

I know I came across as strongly opinionated. I tend to be that kind of person. But, I really didn't mean to discourage you. You're so close, practically in the promised land. Many people here would kill to be only 10 pounds away. I will admit, I am never a fan of egg fasts. When someone has 50 pounds to lose and wants to do an egg fast to get a jump start, I am less vocal. I don't agree with the idea, but some people are desperate to see some results.
The last 10 pounds can be incredibly frustrating because they are the slowest 10 pounds you can imagine. And, you will see others here talking about 10 pound losses in a couple weeks. Of course, that's usually the first 10 out of a hundred to lose. You are in the slow and steady recomposition stage. The problem with going too fast, at this stage, is that you lose lean muscle mass or otherwise hurt your health. It is better to take 6 months now and have it stick for the rest of your life, then to get it done in a couple months but be back two years from now even heavier.
We're all trying to help each other out here. Now, I can't stop you from doing it your way. Even if you chose to do the egg fast. And, I would be as supportive as I could while you did it. I might not "encourage" it, but I would do my best to let you know that we're here for you. I was not joking when I said that I see this come up a lot. The long term odds are better for those who accept that it's a long process and take the time to let their body settle into their goal weight. That's the whole purpose of my post.0 -
I like people that keep it real and it can be a fine line to walk. One thing I have definitely learned is low carb can be very individual based depending on that individual. I lost 100 pounds doing this before and so far I've lost 60 pounds this go around. My body is just different now... Post baby, post thyroidectomy, and soon to be post hysterectomy. I am getting older and I'm sure that doesn't help either. I had heard that if you hit a stall just get stricter... I couldn't get any stricter I could just start over. So that what I did. Thanks for proving to be supportive after all. You obviously are a strong influence on others in this group. Definitely a leader.0

I to have about 10 lbs till goal. The scale barely moves from day to day or even week to week. I did some photos of myself the other day as I was becoming really discouraged thinking one never get to goal. I found in the comparison photos that some areas of my body have slimmed down considerably even though I weigh 3 lbs more in the new photos. Seeing that I look smaller and stronger while weighing more had helped me not care too much what the scale says. Goat is right, you don't want to be depleting your lean muscle to see the scale move, you'll end up looking squishy and soft and bigger at a lower weight. Last time I did this I want low carb but got down to 138 lbs just by eating less no exercise. I weigh 150 now and am wearing the same clothes I wore that time.0

Pics is a good idea! I'm terrible about weighing too much! I weight probably 10 times a day! It's an awful habit that I really wish I could break!0

I got around 14 pounds to goal back in September and without changing a single thing, I just stopped losing! Then I actually gained 2 pounds in November. It took me until January to lose that 2 pounds and then all of a sudden I started losing again. But in total I've only lost 4 pounds since September.
If you look at these photos you'd probably guess it was more though.
I've literally done 3 workouts during these months because I just started about a week ago so gaining muscle can't be the explanation. I guess our bodies just do their thing and we can really only influence the results to a degree. It was torture feeling like I wasn't making progress all this time. I didn't even bother taking any progress pics between September and now because I thought, what's the point? But, clearly I had been making progress all along. Somehow. It's a mystery to me how you can weigh the same but be smaller. But it happens. It just took so long for any of it to show on the scale and I just have to keep doing what I know is right and have faith that my body will take what I give it and do the best it can to keep me healthy with it.

The body is a marvelous mysterious thing isn't it?!? We've always learned "just eat less. Just exercise more. Weight will come pouring off". Yeah, it doesn't work that way. It's that crud we've always had drilled into our heads that's to blame for our high expectations from the scale. I'm now learning to trust my body and definitely learning patience and I'm confident I'll get the result I want, eventually.0

Hunger is controlled by hormones, it isn't always an indication of whether you are eating enough.
You want to also think about body composition, what percent of your body is fat versus other lean body mass. My weight is fine, but I have more fat than I want. I don't necessarily need to lose more weight, but I would like to be more lean. That may or may not result in a lower scale weight. This is what auntstephie is talking about in the posts above.

I empathize. I've had plateaus when I'm already being strict. They can be discouraging and it can be hard to know which direction to go for experimenting to see what might help you break through the plateau. I'm at a point of getting antsy with my slowed/reversed weight loss progress recently and appreciated some of the advice in this thread that I think will apply to me, too, so thank you for asking the question! I've learned a lot from hearing such a wide range of experiences and advice in this group. Keep up the good work; sounds like you've been doing great! The last 5-10 lbs is often the toughest and I know for me, it often messes with my mind!0
