My doc is a rockstar!

I first tried low carb in 2004 after a young doc, fresh out of med school, said "d00d, you've got metabolic syndrome" and then recommended that I read Protein Power.

He moved to Seattle and I switched docs. 12 years later, it turns out he's a rising star in the low-carb world:

I was just about to post a slide of his when I recognized him as my old doc. Cool!

Wow!!! This is awesome. I can't wait to read more from his website. I see he does IF, I didn't really even know what that was, turns out I sometimes do it! Lol

It's always cool to have reputable board certified physicians back things you like! Maybe it will convince more people to get on board.

Lol. At first I didn't believe you when you wrote he actually said "Dude, you've got metabolic syndrome." Then I read some of his stuff. It all makes sense but I chuckled when he described a drink as "super awesome." ;)

Yeah, he hasn't matured much in 12 years. :)

He was also doodling diagrams for me back then. I had no idea what he was trying to tell me at the time -- but he basically diagrammed how TG and HDL were in counterbalance in the liver.

I probably shouldn't admit it, but that's literally how I talk.
I say dude a lot. And lots of stuff is super awesome all the time! Lol

This doctor is in marked contrast to my gastroenterologist: an overweight frump who when I reported vast improvements to my Crohn's Disease symptoms after going low carb looked at me as though I'd foolishly consulted a witch doctor. Gosh, why would the food we eat have ANYTHING to do with the state of our digestive system? That's just crazy talk.

You know, it's one thing to not make the connection between food and, say, neurological or skeletal issues, but the idea that food doesn't affect the GI system is just a whole new level of astounding.

Oh, look, he's Primal! And that's always cool to see a doctor, especially your own, become such a big name for such awesome reasons. :)

That's exactly the same attitude I get from my boyfriend's gi when discussing his diet. When he has flares his Dr says eat soft foods like pasta or rice and bread. It's insane to me they don't focus more on nutrition considering it is a problem with the digestive system.

Lol. This just makes me wonder what the doctor thinks causes the issue if the fix is soft foods? Does he think he's eating hard foods. Like rocks and nails or what?
Geez! Everything is about slapping a bandaid on the symptom and not treating the cause.

HOGS AND QUICHES for posting this. Dr Joel Fuhrman also says that we should eat bitter greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds to optimize nutrition. Eating them together increases their cancer fighting properties. I've been eating like for a week and lost 4 pounds.

Yeah apparently cuz he specifically said eat softer foods they'll be easier to digest, like pasta, rice, bread, try to avoid things like red meat and pork chops those are going to take a lot more work to digest.

I just listen and am like oh ok then tell my boyfriend he said to eat gluten free and no sugar. Lol, its usually after his colonoscopies so he has no idea what we talked about. I wish I could get him to go fully low carb for a good month and see how he feels and how things look at his next colonoscopy, he's just so ultra stubborn and can't let go of the sugar especially.

It baffles me that the first few times I met with this doc he never once ever mentioned his diet as a reason for the issues. I understand crohns is auto immune and they don't seem to understand what causes it but literally all they want to do is put him on steroids and biologics. Well the steroids nearly killed him last year after is suppressed his immune system so much that he ended up with sepsis and endocarditis and a month in the hospital. Clearly that wasn't the answer. IDK how they can not focus on what he's putting in his mouth, it's his friggin digestive system, what else affects if more than what he's digesting.

Any doctor giving nutritional advice should have a site with pictures of himself without a shirt... ;)

Ah, and lots of great info there too, thanks for sharing. :)

My guy always devolves into a conversation about how Dude is the technical term for a hair on an elephant's @$$.... And I say it way too often, too. I think it's our generation/range.

I went on a pilgrimage to see Doc Rockstar today. And I took my wife with me!

I have not been able to convince her to go low carb, but she was willing to listen to an MD. I think it worked. Well, at least she says she's game now.

We both talked to him for about an hour. He's a great guy and gave her the full spiel.

    Some take-home messages:
    • Many of us are eating in a way that's incompatible with our genes.
    • Hyperinsulinemia is at the root of MANY modern pathologies, not just weight gain.
    • Some cultures, notably Asians, may not even show much of a weight gain and still be sick.
    • Low HDL is the best proxy for hyperinsulinemia, short of a direct measure of insulin.
    • He feels everybody should be under 60g net carbs. He's at around 50g. But any reduction is an improvement.
    • Three tools for improved health: low carb, HIIT. and IF (he does 16:8, basically skips breakfast).
    • He's a fan of high nutrient density and thinks one of the causes of obesity is simply nutrient seeking: eat till you get enough nutrients.

And then we went next door to have chili cheeseburgers at the XXX. :)
