What do you eat before exercise?

T2 on oral meds. My BG control has gotten better over the last few months between the meds and the weight loss. I joined the local Y, and go to exercise 5-6 days a week. I'm doing moderate cardio (30-40 minutes brisk walking on the treadmill). I go to the gym after work, then go home and have dinner. I usually have a light snack mid-afternoon. I'm not that hungry after work, but I have found if I don't eat something just before exercising, I'm likely to have a low (in the 70s, mildly lightheaded). I've taken to eating a protein bar in the car on my way to the gym, but that tends to use up most of the calories I earn during exercise.
What do others do to keep your BG steady during exercise? Any suggestions for lower-calorie options?

If I'm low before exercise, I've taken a couple of glucotabs and that's only 30 cals for two and it brings me up from the 60's to the mid 70's. Then 1/2 of a 12oz gatorade for 40 cals (or less) can keep me going all the way through for an hour of body pump. My BG won't drop below 80.0

That's interesting. I keep Smarties (dextrose candy tablets) in my purse for a quick fix when I'm low, but didn't think they'd have staying power. Those are only 25 calories and 6 g carbs for a roll. I'll give it a try. Thanks!0

I usually have a yogurt, Maybe you could try cutting your protein in half and see how you do? I've just started making my own protein bars, less calories and cheaper. http://thebigmansworld.com/2016/01/27/healthy-3-ingredient-no-bake-paleo-protein-bars/ I make these with regular mini chocolate chips!0

I eat one of those mini cottage cheeses or a tablespoon of peanut butter. It doesn't feel heavy on my stomach but does the trick. I will also eat yogurt too. Hope that helps0

I used to have a banana before biking to work every day. It was a 35 minute ride. Mind you, that was before diabetes.
But, it is a low calorie food, 15g of carbs.0 -
Today, I tested just before exercising. I was at 102. I ate 2 rolls of Smarties (12 g. carbs, 50 calories). When I finished exercising, I was at 100. So I guess that was enough to keep me at a safe level.0

Plus, you got to eat smarties!0 -

Meh. They are not that exciting. Dextrose, citric acid, and a little bit of flavoring. But they keep me from going low at a minimal expense of calories, and they're cheaper than glucose tablets at the pharmacy.0 -

Throwing this out there.
You say you tested before exercising. Then you ate smarties (love smarties), then you tested after exercising.
This may be obvious to everyone but me,but here goes.
My plan today is:
Have my lunch.
Then go for a nice walk.
So, test before lunch then after walk? Is that the norm?0 -
I hate to be a pest, but,
Before lunch, my BG was 11.7 (210.6). Kinda high since it was 5.7 (102.6) fasting this morning.
So, I had my lunch, a turkey sandwich on whole wheat.
Went for a 38 minute walk. Checked my BG 20 minutes later, 3.5 (63).
Neither reading was good, to big a jump. Maybe not take the digestive enzymes before I exercise?
Things are getting complicated again!0
