Choose two "fad" diets. Compare the two diets, and discuss why or why not each of these diets is/is not a healthy choice. The diets you choose do not have to be "weight loss" diets, but could also include "healthy lifestyle" diets.

I chose The Tapeworm Diet and The Amputation Diet.

    The Tapeworm Diet

    What is it?
    - the way that tapeworms aid in weight loss has been around for almost a century
    - the idea is that the food you eat is split between your own body and that of the tapeworm
-> you are a host and the tapeworms use you by attaching suckers to your stomach and feeding on the foods that you eat
--> the tapeworms reduces the amount of calories you absorb without reducing the calories you consume
    - people who support this diet will argue that you can eat whatever you want while still losing weight

How do you ingest a tapeworm?
    - eating raw meat, being in contact with infected faces and other foods that contain tapeworm

What does the tapeworm do in your body?
    - after being ingested, it makes its way through the digestive system attaching itself and feeding as it goes - unpleasant experience both physically and psychologically

    Is it legal?
    - in the United States, possessing tapeworms is illegal, and in some other countries as well

IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A HEALTHY CHOICE, HERE'S WHY:
    - ingesting a tapeworm is basically infecting your body
    - it is possible for the tapeworms to deviate into other parts of your body than just the stomach through your blood system, even your brain, where it can have deadly consequences
    - the tapeworm can actually result in vitamin deficiencies
    - side effects of the Tapeworm Diet: abdominal pain, weakness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, conctipation, bloating...
    - the tapeworm poses a threat to the human body, do not do it, ever.

    The Amputation Diet

    What is it?
    - a ridiculous diet which consists of amputating a part of your body
    - one of the worst diets of all time
    - the diet consists of losing excess fluids and body parts to lose weight

    How does this diet work?
    - you can lose weight by trimming toenails, getting a haircut, urinating, donating blood and taking laxatives
    - to lose even more weight the following extremes are suggested: amputation of a limb, donating a kidney and breast reduction
    - the diet also suggests not eating or drinking for 2-3 days to prevent weight gain

IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A HEALTHY CHOICE, HERE'S WHY:
    - the only benefits are fast results, but really?
    - nobody wants to cut off a part of their body, or do you?

In my opinion, I would not try any of these diets, because I do not want a tapeworm in my stomach or other inner parts of my body nor would I try the amputation diet. I am not going to cut off my arm/leg/finger/anything for the sake of losing weight.

The two diets that I chose were the Paleo and Juice diets as I have heard and seen a lot about them, but have always wondered what they were and wether they were effective.

    Paleo:

The Paleo diet is basically when a person takes on the eating habits of a "hunter-gatherer", and effectively cutting out all the modern food creations which have high levels of sodium, preservatives and fats, and instead mimic living off the land. It emphasizes eating fruits and vegetables, and basically whatever can be found in nature in the pre-agricultural era of humanity. This means no diary, crops foods (potatoes), bread, or alcohols. Research has been found that when done correctly can be very effective, especially for women. However, some of the issues that come along is following the "rules" of the diet. Often times what some think as natural, others do not. The foods are usually very pricey with little variety and often times causes problems for people who aren't used to going from eating whatever to having strict rules to follow. It is pretty healthy considering you will be consuming a lot of fresh produce and meat and seafood which provide a lot of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, omega-3 and more. However the strict and "up to interpretation" rules make it hard to follow, and if not followed correctly can cause over eating of certain foods and lack of nutrients like whole grains and calcium found in other food groups.

    Juice (Juice Cleanse):
There are many different juice cleanse programs available out there, however they all follow pretty much the same idea. The body goes through a period of "detoxification" by only drinking fresh juices, water and eating fruits. It can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the program. The idea is to add more vegetables and fruits into your diet, which provides all the health benefits that come with eating fruits and vegetables. Many claim to have increased energy and lose weight. Whilst it is a healthy choice for a short while, it can be dangerous for certain groups of people. For example in those undergoing chemo and diabetics with the increase in sugar and other vitamins in the body. The higher amounts of sugar in fruits and vegetables can cause problems with blood sugar in the long term. Many also argue that by juicing the fruits and vegetables takes out much of the fiber and some of the nutrients that come with eating a whole fruit. If you go for too long on just juice, common sense would point to the lack of balance that other foods can provide. A lack of sodium and carbohydrates can cause a lot more problems, and the claims about to detoxification are mostly false as all detoxification happens in the liver and kidneys and the body is already really good at detoxifying the body so there really isn't anything drinking juice can detoxify.

Often times many of these diets promote a healthy body, weight loss, and other things. However it is usually a way for companies to sell more products and to make clients pay the higher prices of their fresh pressed juice or organic whole products. In the end eating a balanced diet with regular amounts of excersize is truly the way to lead a healthier lifestyle.

A fad diet is a diet that promises dramatic results. They usually don't result in long term results and are very unhealthy. The two fad diets i will be discussing is the Alkaline Diet and the Five-Bite Diet.

    Alkaline Diet:

The Alkaline Diet is also commonly known as the alkaline ash diet. This strict diet requires you to cut out sweets, dairies, meats, caffeine, alcohol, artificial and processed foods. It demands a large consumption of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, and seed. This diet is very beneficial as it needs a high intake of fish products, other healthy, satisfying foods while eliminating processed fare, which in itself may spur weight loss. There is no need to worry about your body changing pH balances while doing this diet. In the end, this diet is strict, complicated, and bans bad foods for your body that will have a negative affect.

I would say this diet is not unhealthy because it does cut out all processed foods and other impure foods that put our health at a risk everyday. Having said that, I feel no diet to an extreme is good for our body, cutting everything out leaving your body cold turkey.

    The Five-Bite Diet:

The five bite diet created by MD Alwin Lewis consists of the dieter skipping breakfast and only eating dinner. You can eat what ever you like in this diet, but the catch? YOU CAN ONLY EAT 5 BITES OF THE MEAL YOU CHOOSE. This is incredibly unhealthy, because no matter how big of a bite you take, the max calorie intake you will get per day will be around 900-1000 calories. This is very unhealthy and puts a large amount of stress on your body since the average grown man needs 2000 calories a day to properly function. Your body needs a well rounded meal with nutrition and vitamins to make it through the day and function, and 5 bites isn't enough for this to happen.

I WOULD NOT try this diet, and would never recommend it to anyone. It is extremely unhealthy an it will lead to a eating disorder or becoming malnourished.

In my opinion I would only ever try the Alkaline Diet just to cleanse by body of toxins and impurities, not as a weight loss diet.

    1. The Grapefruit Diet

Followers of the "Grapefruit Diet" focus all of their meals around grapefruit or grapefruit juice. This fad is based on a false claim that grapefruits contain fat-burning enzymes; dieters will supposedly lose 10 or more pounds in as little as 12 days. In fact, this weight loss is a result of minimal calorie intake, ranging from around 800 to 1,000 calories a day depending on the version of the diet. Incorporating fruit into your diet is beneficial to a healthy lifestyle and the water in grapefruit may help you to feel fuller, but any weight lost will most likely be regained later. Plus, this fad diet is impractical unless you really really love grapefruit.

    2. The HCG Diet

The HCG diet consists of extremely low levels of calories and a hormone that allegedly suppresses appetite(HCG). Any weight lost through this diet is due to limited calories and has no health benefits. The strict cutoff of 500 to 800 calories a day borders on self-imposed starvation. HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin is used to treat fertility issues in women and has not been approved by the FDA as a weight loss supplement. There is no evidence that this hormone works, and the difficulty in acquiring necessary nutrients through such little amounts of food means that this diet is both dangerous and ineffective.

    1) The Master Cleanse Diet
This diet is found in many variations, but usually includes ingesting only lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup mixed with water. This diet is meant to be done for 3-10 days, and no solid food is consumed during this period. Although the creators of the diet claim that it 'detoxifies' the body and is considered one of the best weight loss diets, these claims are not based on actual fact at all. In fact, this diet can be extremely harmful because no nutrients/energy are absorbed into the body except for the minimal energy found in the diet’s ingredients. Thus, it can be very injurious to one’s physical and mental health as the diet can fatigue you and cause weakness in general. Additionally, when the diet is over, almost all of the weight is put back on very quickly because of the switch from restriction to a normal eating pattern. Thus, this is an extremely dangerous and unhealthy diet that should not be utilized for healthy and safe weight loss/management/lifestyle.

    South Beach Diet

This diet is known to be one of the most popular fad diets around, and does not seem to be an extremely harmful diet if done correctly. In fact, this diet was created by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatson to help his heart patients, and it proved to help them lose weight and stay healthier. The initial phase of the diet is harsh, with a restrictive diet, but through the second and third phases the regime becomes more lenient and aims to create a diet that can be incorporated into daily life for maximum benefit of the weight loss from the more restrictive stages. Though the diet restricts the consumption of saturated fats, it encourages the consumption of carbohydrates in moderation from whole grain, wheat, and other healthy carbohydrate options. Additionally, it does not completely eliminate unhealthy foods, allowing for those to also be consumed in moderation. Thus, it seems to be a fairly realistic and simple diet that can be applied into daily life and can be healthy when done appropriately (as outlined in the official website).

The South Beach Diet and Master Cleanse Diet are two diets that are on completely opposite ends of the health spectrum. While the South Beach Diet seems to be fairly healthy when done correctly, the Master Cleanse Diet aims to have rapid weight loss in a very unhealthy and often times dangerous manner that greatly restricts calories and leaves the person doing the diet extremely weak.

Fad diets don't usually result in long term weight loss but only rapid weight loss.

    The master cleanse diet:

No solids allowed to be consumed, only lemonade, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. The duration of this diet is 3-10 days. The creator claims that it is the best weight loss diet and that it detoxifies the diet, these are not true! There are non nutrients being absorbed into the body so this diet is not helpful.

    HCG diet:

This diet expects you to eat extremely less amounts of food and hormones that make you less hungry. This diet has no health benefits. This diet is both dangerous and has no benefits. It is not approved by the FDA as a weight loss supplement and is used by women for fertility.

  • 1. Grapefruit diet
The grapefruit diet, also known as the hollywood diet, is a short term fad diet that has existed in the United States since the 30s. The belief behind the diet is based on grapefruits having a fat burning enzyme, which is why it is so successful at short and quick wight loss. The diet is done by eating half of a grapefruit every meal. Although most likely not a good choice to do this diet, it is suggested to make sure you are eating more than 1000 calories a day with the grapefruits. The grapefruit diet does not require exercise. It is not beneficial to anyone over an extended period of time, as it could cause problems such as malnutrition. Overall the grapefruit diet sounds very intensive being very dangerous to have such a low calorie intake.

    2. Israeli Army Diet
This is a fad diet that was extremely popular in the 1970s. The diet lasted 8 days and only allowed eating one type of food for 2 days. It consisted of Apples, Cheese, chicken, and salad. This fad diet is one of the more effective of those out there. It promotes high intensity and quick weight loss, but at the same time leaves no long term results. This diet does not have very good nutritional fulfillment and is unhealthy.

Neither of these diets are very good for you and it is suggested by many nutritions not to do high intensity, nutrient deficient diets which don't yield long term weight loss.
  • Comments: Ethan: The five-bite diet sounds really extreme, I wouldn't ever imagine anyone to ever be able to do that without dying.

Sara: The south beach diet seems very interesting and definitely one of the more reasonable fad diets here.

The definition of a fad diet is that it is supposed to show amazing results in a couple of weeks because of how or what you eat. It could be mixed with a couple of exercises but most of the time there aren't any.

There's the Paleo fad diet and "The Sleeping Beauty Diet".

The Paleo fad diet is supposedly be of fresh meats, seafoods, and vegetables, fruits, and nuts/seeds. No carbs or anything that is fattening. This will be full of your nutrient needs and will fulfill your daily calorie intake. Although what is bad for people that are doing the Paleo diet is that it really depends on if you can do it. Because some people have to have sugar intakes or carbs because they need it for their own health. It is a good diet to have and to live with.

The Sleeping Beauty Diet is that there is no food included in this diet. You sleep in order to burn calories. You will get caught up with your sleep though there is no food. This is really bad because your sleeping habit will change and it will get messed up. In order to burn calories is that you sleep for a long time and you practically starve yourself. Don't do that!

Anna** I like how you include the tape worm diet because it is very famous and super unhealthy! people have to wake up and realize what it is doing!!

Ethan** The Alkaline diet sounds amazinnnnng IF you have fresh fruits and vegetables.

    The Five Bite Diet:

On this diet, you skip breakfast, but eat whatever you want for lunch and dinner, but only five bites of it. You’re basically depriving yourself of food to lose weight and although eating food in smaller portions is okay, but you should round out your diet with nutrient-dense foods and you need to give your body the fuel it needs by eating meals.

    The Sleeping Beauty Diet:

This diet goes off the fact that as long as you’re sleeping, you’re not eating. This diet consists of taking medication in order to stay asleep for days at a time. This diet not only starves your body, but it also causes muscle deterioration from the lack of movement in the time that you are on this diet.

Both of these diets are used for weight loss, but they are both centered around simply not eating which is extremely unhealthy. As well as starving your body and yourself the nutrients you need, it is likely that the weight you lose while on this diet will come right back.

A fad diet is a weight loss plan that usually achieves dramatic results. These diets typically don't result in long-term weight loss and they are not typically very healthy.

    The Cookie Diet
This might sound yummy and appetizing at first. However it is important to note that biscuits like chocolate chip cookies are not on the diet plan. Dr. Siegal's developed this Cookie Diet which promises loss of weight just by eating cookies. These are special biscuits which vary from protein and high-fiber for snacks, breakfast and lunch. This should amount up to amount 500 to 600 calories. Then you can eat normal food for dinner.

    The Master Cleanse/Lemonade Diet
This diet is pretty much consists of just drinking lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed in water for days, with no solid foods. The weight that is mostly loss is water weight, however once you start eating solid foods again, all of the lost weight will be gained again. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low-calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don't want to lose.

    Comparing Diets:
Both of these diets sound very unhealthy. I wouldn't either try of those. The Cookie diet is unhealthy, since one should vary their diet and not constantly eat the same thing over and over again. Additionally, these cookies do not provide the necessary vitamins to sustain a human. Similarly, the lemonade diet can cause very unpleasant side effects. Throwing up and muscle loss are just a few.

There are many fad diets that are extremely dangerous for your health, and most of them will lead to malnutrition with varying degrees of seriousness. That beeing said however, there are some that are good, and the two im talking about are a couple of those ones.

    Baby food diet:

This diet involves eating exclusivley pureed baby food for a certain period of time, it is good because baby food is naturally made to have all the things the body needs to grow, and when eaten in larger quantities, can be great for an adult as well.

    Paleo Diet:

This diet is one that has people eat only raw and natural foods. This means cutting out all proccesed foods and all grains, while subbing in lean meats and raw vegatables. This is good because you can loose weight and supplement a good workout plan as well, but also make it hard for you to get your carb intake down.

Overall both diets are good for you, and if done right, will leave you looking and feeling better.

The Five Bite Diet is a diet that consists of skipping breakfast, also known as one of the most important meals of the day, then only taking five bites of a certain food during lunch and dinner in order to lose weight. This is an extremely harmful diet due to the fact that your body does need more nutrients throughout the day and even though these foods are calorie-dense, you'd still be consuming less calories than you should, too less which is harmful. The Tapeworm Diet is a disgusting yet another harmful diet that is used to lose weight once again. This diet consists of consuming tapeworm eggs and having a tapeworm eat all the food you consume yourself. Once you have reached your goal of weight loss, you get an anti-worm medication that beats off the worm afterwards. Although the threatening part is the fact that the tapeworm is able to migrate to different parts of your body, only to cause long term life threatening problems.

The raw food diet- The raw food diet is more of a philosophy and lifestyle choice than a conventional weight-loss diet. A raw food diet is one in which 75% or more of the food a person eats is uncooked. Generally, raw foodists believe that the closer a person can come to eating a diet that is 100% raw, the better that person's health will be.

Alkaline diet- The alkaline diet—also known as the alkaline ash diet and the alkaline acid diet—requires you cut out meat, dairy, sweets, caffeine, alcohol, artificial and processed foods, and consume more fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, and seeds. The diet certainly has positive points; it's heavy on fresh produce and other healthy, satisfying foods while eliminating processed fare, which in itself may spur weight loss. But your body is incredibly efficient at keeping your pH levels where they need to be, so cutting out these foods really won't affect your body's pH

    The Grapefruit Diet
This diet is one that you should not try. These individuals "focus all of their meals on grapefruit or grapefruit juice" and it "limit(s) dieters to 800 to 1,000 calories a day" which is way below what the average person should intake on a daily basis. Each day a person should consume about 2,500 calories which would make The Grapefruit Diet not healthy at all and something that you should not do in order to lose weight.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/worst-fad-diets_n_5592013.html?section=india

    The Blood-Type Diet
This diet is "based on the notion that the foods you eat react chemically with your blood type.". For this diet for example those with type O blood are to eat lean meats, vegetables, and fruits, and avoid wheat and dairy. Meanwhile, type A dieters go vegetarian, and those with type B blood are supposed to avoid chicken, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds. This does not help the individual gain the amount of vitamins, minerals and calories that they would need in a regular day making this a diet that you should not participate in to lose weight.
