Taking supplements depends on if you're working out or if you're not. According to research, if you aren't working out or isn't following what's needed when you're taking the supplements, you could become more fatter, unhealthier, kidney strain and low quality nutrition. My parents take supplements because as they are getting older, they need something to keep them energized because they work all day. For me, I'm not really doing anything except going to school and all, so it's not really necessary for me. I think you should take supplements if you want to see a further improvement.

First of all, to understand supplements, one must know what they are. They are meant to improve your diet by providing vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes and other beneficial substances. They come in different forms (such as gels, tablets, capsules, ...).
There are some advantages of supplements such as: contribution to improvement of muscular strength, endurance, overall physical performance. They are commonly taken by athletes. They can prevent diseases and health conditions.
However, there are disadvantages as well. They are not as strictly regulated as drugs, so their effectiveness may not be as dependable. Some can be toxic and cause serious side effects. For example vitamin A toxicity can cause liver damage, blurred vision, headaches, bone pain, welling, drowsiness and nausea. Supplements can also interact with medications, which can cause unwanted side effects and decrease the efficacy of the medicine.
In my opinion, it's better not to take supplements. As I don't have any experiences with them, I can't really share too much of my thoughts. However, I am not planning on trying supplements ever. I prefer normal delicious food. One has to work for their goal; exercise and eat healthy!

@18nrahmat : It was interesting to read about your parents and the fact that you expressed your perspective (that you recommend supplements to people who want to see improvement).

I recently read a book about a guy who was playing high school football. He wanted to get stronger and faster and it was his trainer at the gym who got him onto roids. Eventually the depression got to him bad, and the anger worse. tI I was able to learn a lot about them, the nameless (Dbol, Novalde, etc.) and how they affect the mind, and what terms like stacking, and juicing meant. But it got me thinking a lot about how far some people would go to achieve the "perfect body". Personally I would not even go for that, and even things like protein, and whey and all of that is something that I don't feel I personally need right now. However things like vitamins and others of the sorts are more feasible, but I'd rather get it from the food I eat. However I understand that there are some elderly who take calcium or ginkgo to improve their bones or brains. The research does say that supplements shouldn't be a substitute for food and help to fill gaps in your diet. You should always consult a doctor before starting supplement. There has yet to be concrete evidence on the use of vitamin supplements and their positive health effects, however some omega 3 or vitamin c a couple times a week wouldn't hurt. BUT STAY AWAY FROM THE JUICE

@Sofea: Same, I'm good without the supplements, don't need em.
@Anna: Liked how you talked about the pros and cons!!

From prior knowledge, I know that prolonged abuse of steroids as supplements is an unhealthy way of gaining muscle mass. According to the National Institute on drug abuse, anabolic steroids have been linked to severe acne, kidney and liver failure, and further negative affects to the brain and sex organs. A gradual increase in weight-lifting paired with less reps and more protein is a much healthier alternative. Harvard Medical School advises that vitamin supplements should only be taken if that vitamin cannot be consumed through your diet. Though supplements appear to be a quick fix for improving health, they are more beneficial when consumed through foods such as spinach and carrots(good sources of Vitamin A). Dietary weight loss pills also come with many risks, including increased chance of a heart attack or stroke. Yet again, consistent exercise paired with balanced food choices is the best way to live a healthy lifestyle.

@18nrahmat I liked how you emphasized the importance of exercise and age when deciding whether to take supplements.

@18amasarikova Your pros and cons list was very clear and well-organized. I agree with you about the benefits of simple healthy diet and exercise!

In my opinions, if one is physically active, motivated, dedicated, and willing to be workout out every single day, then taking supplements can help one's workout. While there are supplements that are healthy or beneficial, there are supplements which are illegal and harmful to one's health (Steroids, detanole tablets, methoxy, vanadyl sulfate). Supplements such as whey protein, creatine, fish oils, testosterone boosters, and multivitamins are all beneficial to the body and muscle growth process when taken in appropriate doses, and when working out rigorously. Researches agree that supplements for athletes and gym rats are beneficial, but in moderation.

Supplements help build muscle quicker once muscle has been broken, but if you don't break your muscle (work out) then the supplements are completely useless! If you do work out then you could take supplements if you want to bulk up quicker. There are some supplements that are not FDA approved so please research on the supplement you are about to consume before you consume it, otherwise things could get dangerous.

Personally, I don't think taking supplements in order to improve you fitness, strength and drive to work out is a bad thing, but as long as they are supplements that are vitamins, amino acids etc. Research says that "if you’re doing your best to eat healthy foods but still are deficient in some areas, supplements can help." and "They’re supplements, not replacements.". This is regarding the diet portion of taking supplements, but concerning personal fitness and working out "supplements might help you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients" when you are working out. You need extra vitamins and minerals when you are working out because you are burning more calories, losing electro-lights and other essential things that your body needs so to help you get all of those back you can take supplements to help you replace all the essentials you lost. Sometimes food cant replace everything you need. The safety and risks that you should know about when taking supplements is that "Many supplements contain active ingredients that can have strong effects in the body. Always be alert to the possibility of unexpected side effects, especially when taking a new product.".

Supplements do benefit you in some ways that you wish although you must take it right. Taking supplements are extremely harmful if you overdose. Supplements if taken too often are able to cause problems within the body or even serious risk of death. I do take some supplements in my daily routine for personal use although in personal fitness class, I will avoid these things. I am careful with my pick in supplements and am very cautious with my use in doing so. As long as you are cautious and take supplements as protein after or before workouts, vitamins, and those that are safe as long as you don't overdose are fine. A common abuse of supplements are steroids which have many negative side affects that may be able to affect your life.

17tgustin: I completely agree that some supplements are not completely harmful to you.
18zkanwaar: I again agree that taking supplements will benefit you from building muscles faster when broken down such as whey protein.

Personally, if I eat healthy I don't see the need of supplements. I would only take them if I was missing a specific vitamin. For working out, I'd prefer not to take them just because I just don't find them useful. According to my sources, "Supplements are the biggest threat to the integrity of the personal training industry". For example, steroids, are vary dangerous and provide an unfair advantage in sports competition. They can also lead to various side effects like vomiting or liver damage and to death if taken in extreme amounts. However, supplements that contain fish oils, testosterone boosters and protein are beneficial to the body if taking appropriate amounts.
