Finally it dawns

So my husband and I started eating low carb. in Sept. due to health issues. The doctor said it would be impossible to control our diabetes with diet. With in one week we'd brought the numbers under control to within a safe range without medication. My husband has dropped over 130+ pounds and I've dropped 80+. Another surprising but pleasant outcome is that my husband irritable bowl issue disappeared in only a couple of weeks of starting. This was huge for us. It was at the point where if we went out somewhere after eating (or sometimes not even after eating) he'd need to find a restroom and I'd end up playing a game on his phone for 20+ minutes waiting for him. This was something that truly bothered him but with this woe it has disappeared.
Now my husband enjoys the effects of this woe and even likes the food. However, it doesn't bother him if he goes over his carbs some days. He figures it's okay and he can just step right back into this woe, which he always does. So trying to get him to wrangle the amount of carbs and types of carbs he eats on a designated "cheat" day is sometimes hard. We do not have many of these, birthday, anniversary, and 1 day when the fair is in town. We ended up going to ruby tuesdays for dinner last not due to an issue where the new puppy helped knock dinner to the floor. We did soup and salad bar. Not a bad choice. Still higher then I like but not bad. Now I watched my husband pile on the croutons and i watched him take that piece of bread and I've been nothing that he's been very carb loose lately. I didn't say anything because well I'm not his mother after all. Then last night as we were turning into bed he says "I think when we have days where we eat over our calories we really need to stick to low carb. My stomach is really upset after that biscuit tonight." I asked him what about his birthday and he said while we would still be going out he wanted me to check the menus a head of time and work it into our plan. Finally he's woken up.

. It's annoying how carbs can creep up when we let things get loose.0

Thank you And it is annoying how fast they can add up. You have to really be vigilant or they can add up quick. We are slowly working on dropping them down lower and after this next week (we'll be traveling a few days) we plan on going 50 or lower. Now that he's made the decision that he can't eat some things without it coming back to kick him in the butt or in this case stomach later it should go even smoother. Now on to trying to convince him it might be okay to try and eat over allotted calories as long as we keep the carbs low. ..... One hurdle at a time. He's open to the idea though.0

That's so awesome. Let's hope it sticks.0

Awesome story.
My IBS had been with me for 40 years. While it was improve it was about six months before I realized it gone completely and that was a year away. I was after pain manage for joints and muscles and that came in only 30 days after I left off sugar and grains.0 -
The doctor said it would be impossible to control our diabetes with diet.
Someone's stuck in the 50s, it seems.0 -
Ditto everything. Its great news and I wish I could see your doc's face when you he discovers you were right and he was wrong!
The pic I have below my signature, is of a fortune cookie I got when I first started on the Keto diet.
Keep up the good work!

There were so many health benefits to this woe that we didn't realize until we started. We were just looking to get our blood sugar levels under control. It came as a shock to both of us when we found out we were both diabetic on the same day. All the doctor wanted to do was stick us on medication, he wouldn't talk about controlling it via diet. He said it couldn't be done. Oh how wrong he was. Neither of us wanted to go on medication so we brought the strips and got on the internet and I started researching and we made the choice that if we couldn't get it under control in 2 months we'd go on medication. We are medication free for the diabetes my blood pressure is now perfect and my husband is having to reduce his BP medication.
My husband plans on going back to that doctor 1 year from when we originally saw him and show him just how wrong he was.0 -
What great success you've had!
He certainly seems to have realized that the foods that once made you unwell can be counted on to do exactly the same thing again if allowed back into your body.
I make all of "special day" treats low carb that way I get to have a "treat food" but also don't put poison into my body. Well, other than artificial sweetener or added fiber anyway. Lol0 -
Hi,
So many questions but first what kind of puppy? I was given miniature schnauzer puppy last fall when my other terrier passed away shortly after we moved. She is the smartest and sweetest dog I have ever owned.
Second, did you follow your blood sugars yourself after changing to Low Carb diet? Was that the strips?
Third, that is awesome you two did this together. Did you exercise more at all or just lost weight by low carb only?
Please give us an update when you see that Dr. again!

1) my puppy is a German Sheppard, Blue healer, husky mix and she's a ball of energy and adorableness. She's 11 weeks now and still working on being house broken but she's so smart she's getting there very quickly. she just really likes to be under foot hence the "helping" with the destruction of dinner last night lol.
2) We followed our blood sugar with strips and the little monitoring kit. We took it in the beginning more then it recommended just to try and keep an eye on how high it was getting and we've gradually tapered off. We take it now maybe once a day and it's never high. Mine drops as low as 68 and only goes about as high as 115. My husbands doesn't go much higher then 135 and that's if he eats a high carb meal with 40+ carbs in a serving. Which he doesn't do often.
3rd) It was great that we could do it together it really helps. To be honest I didn't exercise much at all maybe once or twice a month... at first lol.. Now I do a little more I have an elliptical i might use once or twice a week and i walk the puppy for 2 to 3 5 min. walks a day or one really long 20 min. walk. However my exercise is still not where it should be. My husband I believe didn't exercise at all except that he would make an effort to go up the steps an extra time at work throughout his day. It's been lost pretty much just by watching our carbs. and sugars and counting our calories. We're going to experiment a little now and do the diet doctor challenge here in a week and not count our calories (though I'll still log it all). We want to see if we really can lose weight eating between 20-50 carbs a day without worrying about calories. I figure if it doesn't work we wont be out much and if it does even better.
I will definitely post an update when my husband goes back to see that doctor. I dont know if i'm going to go back to him, I really didn't care for him. I don't like a doctor who's only move is to push meds. with no further thought0 -
Congrats on your journey so far....I want to be where you are. Diagnosed with diabetes last May, I've managed to get off one med and aiming to get rid of the rest.0

Good luck! I'm sure you'll get there.0 -
Wow, that's great!
I can't believe your dr gave you such outdated advice though; ugh!0 -
Oh your puppy will be the best exercise equipment ever!!! What a nice mix. Post a pic. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog . Or at least we burn a few calories trying to get them tired.
Thank you for the info. I can't wait to see what my blood work looks like after 6 months and 30 lbs down.

she's gorgeous people surprisingly enough mistake her for a yellow lab. I'll have to post a pick for ya.
Also I'm sure your blood work will have improved. As long as you're feeling good and doing what works for you how can it not.0 -
Awesome news!
(And some docs just live in a time bubble.)
