Protein Powder

I was philosophically against the idea of consuming protein powder just because it doesn't seem like real food to me, but I got a one-month gym membership, so I was thinking about trying some pre- and post-workout protein shakes.

Costco had a sale on Muscle Milk, so I grabbed a bag.

When I got it home, I read the ingredients. Sucralose? Hmm, second thoughts....

Then I googled. Ooh, a consumer reports article. On heavy metals in protein drinks?

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/04/protein-drinks/index.htm

I'm returning the bag unopened. Back to eggs. :)

    Good call.

Or perhaps there is a better one?

Still sticking to real food, though that is somewhat swimming upstream, even in this community.

Ya, I've got a TON of protein powder from back in my pre-keto days, and now I don't know what to do with it. I feel bad throwing it away. And I don't have any gym buddies currently I can pawn it off on.

Not all protein powders are created equal. Seems like my boss always has a couple different brands sitting around his office (he goes to the gym every day) so sometimes I'll look over the ingredients and nutritional data. I'm always surprised at the crappy/junky ingredients and the fact that most of the ones he uses are higher in carbs/sugars that they should be. Here is the kind I like and use:

I use the unflavored, strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. Their flavors are very mild. I haven't tried most of the other flavors they offer so I can't speak to them.

I alternate between Quest and Optimum nutrition. There's some tastier ones out there, but their ingredients are usually sub par.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Of course I have to be using the worst one. Luckily I only use 1 scoop and that is usually only every 2 or 3 days. Guess I won't be getting anymore of that. Maybe they've cleaned up the chocolate muscle milk since this article was written. But probably not.

Wow, gross!! I know, I usually like sticking to my meats and eggs but sometimes in the morning I like my protein shakes. I just don't feel hungry for like 4 hours in the morn, so I have to make myself eat, or drink in my case. The one I'm using is one I picked up at Walmart. I'm actually digging this so far. I used to use shakeology, but can't afford it anymore. walmart.com/ip/47375942?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227036636198&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=80804050592&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=159727126352&veh=sem

I rarely use protein powder but when I do I use this one: https://www.onlyprotein.com/

I mix mine with bulletproof coffee for breakfast on the weekend if my husband isn't home. If he's home I make eggs and bacon or sausage!

I've been doing protein shakes all week for lunch due to work being overly busier than normal. My friend suggested protizyme? I mix it with almond milk and it's okay. Peanut butter is so far the best. It's not very filling to me though.

Too many to list here, usually 12-13 ingredients blended inmy ninja. I make a smoothie for dinner every couple of days. Take a look at my diary. I'm having one tonight, Friday 25th.

Protein powders that use only whey Isolate 'usually' have 0 carbs

Oh, and I don't usually add cows milk (I'm trying to finish off the carton). I always use almond milk which keeps the calories and CARBS down.

I like Vega protein, mixed with water in a shaker. They have a pretty good reputation.

Pumpkin Seed Protein is also good and low in carbs, unflavoured though so better mixed with something more than water.

I use Designer Protein Lite, Vanilla Cupcake flavor, mixed with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. This powder has 5 grams carb, 4 grams protein. It does have sucrolose(splenda) and as such I do limit having it to just once or twice a week. Very tasty.
