Bowing Out for a While

I spent seven days last week in the hospital with a digestive disorder and have chosen to seriously modify my WOE. There is something called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet that I should have adopted some time ago. It doesn't call itself "low carb" although that's the way it plays out. It's extremely restrictive and demanding (although nothing like as restrictive and demanding as spending a week being fed via an intravenous tube and being pumped with morphine every four hours.) The many useful tips I've picked up from this group will no longer apply since there will be no artificial sweeteners, practically no processed foods, no dairy except butter, farmers cheese and homemade yogurt, no all sorts of ingredients that show up in low-carb recipes.

I'm going to see how it goes. Thanks to the folks who asked me to be their friend; I just wanted to let them know where I've gone.

I hope you find some comfort with your changing plan, but if your dietary stuff still plays out as low carb (under or near 150 grams of carbs and/or intentionally restricting certain carbs), even specific carbs, you'll always be welcome here! (HUGS) and good luck on your recovery! Love to hear more about this dietary plan as you work through it, too.

Yeah, there's no reason to not participate in the group if you're still restricting carbs to any degree. What you learn from your unique experience may be very helpful to others here.

Exactly. I'm always wanting more resources. There are loads of people here who can't tolerate dairy or AS that struggle. I know there are some paleo people around.

All you need to do is call out and I'm betting if the post keeps getting bumped someone on the WOE like yours will see it.
There's been a whole lot of keto posts lately. Keto can be more restrictive for some, so they need a lot of support.

If you haven't seen this, I'm unsure how helpful the limited info is but here is the SCD website.

Please stay and tell us what you learn. We want to support you.

I'm so sorry to hear you are struggling with a digestive disorder. My sister has IBS and her doctor recommended Gluten Free and SCD to help. She's a vegetarian as well so she still tended to be higher carb but with removing many of the grains sugars and other starchy vegetables it helped her IBS a ton.

My boyfriend has IBS and Crohns so I know first hand how awful it can be. I'd love for him to do SCD we have the book and the research on it he just really struggles to change his diet.

I think you should stay in the group, your experience may be incredibly helpful for others going through similar issues. Like you said it will likely keep you in the low carb range anyway.

@mandycat223 best of success. It sounds like I have been eating more or less your new way for the past 18 months. My digestive order cleared up after 6 months and has not returned. Keep in mind no artificial sweeteners or processed foods or many common forms of dairy are part of a low carb way of eating for those of us with any form of digestive disorder.

Why do you think you have to go away?

Good luck on your new woe! I agree with the others, there is no reason for you to leave! There are all kinds of dieters here! I also don't do artificial sweeteners or processed low carb items. I know a lot of people here have eliminated dairy. I hope you'll at least check in and let us know how you are feeling!

@mandycat223 really sorry you've been struggling so much lately. Sounds like you've had a really rough time. I hope your new diet helps with the healing process!

Sad to see you leave the group, was a little confused as you mentioned you're still eating low carb. Avoiding artificial sweeteners, processed foods and most dairy is the ideal way to approach LCHF in my opinion and is what I strive for daily, though I do eat cheese and it's not always from my local farm.

This is a very diverse group of people who are all engaging in a variety of low carb ways of eating, I hope maybe you'll come back and share your new experience when you're feeling better.

@mandycat223 I really wish you would stay. I'm modified paleo & doing Keto.

There is a lot of support for all low carbers here. Why do you feel like you need to go?

That's pretty much how I have been eating since almost a year ago (I learned a very hard lesson about what artificial sweeteners can do last summer, and have avoided them since) and I credit this group to helping me be successful. I hope you stay, but if you choose not to, I hope you find your success! I hope you are well on the road to feeling better too!

Okay, I'm back. I was in the early stages of grief over losing cream, bacon and cheesecake but I've moved on to acceptance now.

Many thanks for all the kind responses. Someone mentioned "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." That book and its supplementary Web site are invaluable as I learn more about the Specific Carbohydrate regimen.

I timidly got back up on my home rowing machine this morning and managed ten minutes, which felt great, if exhausting.

@mandycat223 sincere best wishes for a fast route to a healthier you. I understand your grief. My husband had bought me a bacon calendar in the USA with great bacon recipes. We returned 6 days ago and 2 days ago, Doctor advised part of a no histamine diet I am to stay lchf and eat no dairy, except butter, no artificial sweeteners, no processed food, no avocado and no bacon. What... no bacon??? Good luck and delighted you are still with us. Feels like we have similar narrow diets.

I agree, low carb is low carb. I can not tolerate artificial sweeteners (except stevia and maybe erythritol) and don't like many of the Lo carb recipes which used processed foods. I just posted on another thread that I'd probably categorise myself as Primal (not Paleo) Lo Carb and I always feel welcome here.

I'm glad that you decided to stay. I follow a diet very similar to what you described and don't really find it to be that restrictive. I tend to generally follow a Paleo/Primal diet, I do allow myself some raw milk in the morning and occasionally some raw cheese, but not all the time. I either do ghee or homemade butter and find that my system can tolerate both. Feel free to check out my diary or my Instagram page Podtastic_eats for ideas.
