I really wish that this suggested serum levels for testing. I was supplementing iodine for my thyroid, but my levels went to triple the upper range suggested. My endocrinologist had me cut back to half a pill, and I was still high. Since high iodine can complicated certain things, he wanted to me to go ahead and cut back further. I did, and now I"m not supplementing, and my thyroid levels seemed better controlled, but I did have to increase my dosage, so I'm not sure that's accurate either. My endo said the body should dump what we don't need, but it increased my levels in blood serum A LOT... To discuss again at next month's appointment...0

I have just been reading Primal Body Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas. She advocates supplementing with iodine (and points out that table salt is fortified with iodide not iodine. The former is less easily used by the body). As well as being needed for "healthy thyroid functioning ... it is needed for the normal functioning of every cell as well as the normal manufacturing of all hormones and the functioning of the entire endocrine system".
She says that "For people who are able to supplement with iodine, certain nutrients such as magnesium, selenium, vitamins E, A and D and B complex and C complex vitamins, together with supplementation of full spectrum (Celtic) sea salt [for its trace elements] and essential fatty acids, are essential to iodine absorbing well and its being used properly in the body?"
She also links iodine deficiency with ADHD, atherosclerosis and 23 other maladies.
Also quotes David Brownstein as saying 96% of people in the US are deficient in iodine.0 -
After reading this article I ordered some Iodoral. Hopefully this will help me continue to lose weight.0

If you eat seafood, you might actually be getting pretty close to the amount you need. As @KnitOrMiss pointed out, blind supplementing isn't necessarily a good thing. There is actually an upper limit of tolerance for iodine.
Have a look at http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=69 for a quick short list of iodine-containing foods, as well as information on the upper tolerance limit.0 -
Krill oil may then have some level of iodine?0

When I lived in Florida I ate lots of seafood, I'm sure I had great iodine levels then. Living in Kansas is another story altogether.0
