I started my journey weighing 317 on 3-3-16. As of Monday I weigh 296… so exciting to be under 300. I'm consuming about 900-1100 calories a day eating 3 meals a day, and sometimes it's hard to even hit 900. I walk 12000-22000 steps a day. I'm having a hard time deciding between RNY or the sleeve. I already have a surgery date of 9-26-16. Looking to hear people's stories from either choice please

i had band (2009 which slipped) and coverted to bypass 2015. imo rny all the way, for me the dumping syndrome keeps my food choices in check, ie i could eat that food, but i will suffer, so i wont! also i lost way more with bypass than the band ( no sleave on offer back in 2009)

I chose the sleeve from a standpoint of having a lower amount to lose (about 100#). Not having as much worry about malabsorption although both surgeries require vitamin supplements for life. I was worried about the reroute of the intestines and having a detached stomach portion just floating there. Some have better luck with RNY if you have more heartburn symptoms pre surgery. It is possible to get dumping in both sleeve and RNY, but I think more people experience it with RNY? It is also possible to convert to RNY in the future from the sleeve if needed.

I was sleeved on jan 21 2015 at 250# (HW 264ish) - I am in the 170s now (14 months out). 5'7" 36 yr old female. I have no dumping syndrome and no food aversions. My hunger came back about month 5 or 6 so my sleeve is just a portion control tool for me now. I still have to follow my plan and work on my behaviors such as boredom snacking and food choices. I do not regret my surgery although I'm sure I had some buyers remorse in the beginning. I am still learning how to balance my life around food and working on the head games surrounding boredom/emotional eating.

Hi! Sleeved on 10/15/15. I'm not quite six months out, so still early in my journey. I have had issues with malabsorption in the past, so I did NOT want RNY. Also, through several personal horror stories, the surgeon saw he wasn't going to sway me into it. He warned me that my GERD will probably never go away. It's a med I've been on for years, so it was no bother.

I started in August 2015 at 307lbs. I was 283 on the morning of surgery. This morning, I weighed in at 192. I cannot do sweets, I get sick. I am very diligent about eating to my macros. I plan things out as best I can.

The journey is a total mind and body transformation. Whichever surgery you pick, you have to be committed 100%. The surgery will only work for so long, then you have to work...so it's best to commit now and have that leg up on building new habits and changing your lifestyle.

    Good luck!

RNYGB Nov of 2014, I've lost 150 pounds. Feel great! Resolved blood pressure, cholesterol, GERD, and dramatically improved joint pain, Sleep Apnea. Working out an hour a day and loving it. At this point I feel In control of my eating, not deprived, mostly eating produce & protein and enjoying it. I choose gastric bypass because I wanted to be "All In". I'd do it 1,000 times over!

Here are a couple recent threads about this:

Since you are potentially looking at losing over 100# I would look into the RNY or the DS (which is newer, but has had fantastic success). Your surgeon will have a preference as to what he thinks will be in your best interests.

I was sleeved on April 26, 2010, and lost 108#, but I should have had the RNY because at four months post op I began to vomit bile at random times! With a long history of GERD they now don't recommend the sleeve. So, on Jan. 20, 2015, I was converted to RNY to stop the bile from getting to my stomach.

I do regret ever having the sleeve in the first place.

Hi! My highest weight was 320. I lost weight on my own and got down to 275 and just got stuck there. Looked into surgery after a year of going nowhere. I decided on the sleeve after much research and support group meetings. It just seemed to be the best option for my needs. I wanted a tool to help me with my hunger but I did not want the dumping and the intestine reroute. I believe both are great options and a lot of thought goes into each one. I never considered the lap band because I have had two friends who have had it and neither one had a good experience with it. Day of surgery I was 242. I am almost 5 months out from surgery and I am down to 195. It has worked wonderfully for me.

I was sleeved about 3 years ago. HW 290, surgery weight around 255. I lost about 130 lbs. I chose the sleeve because I wanted normal digestions. No regrets except I wish I'd done it sooner. I was a size 24 at my biggest, now I wear 8 or 10. Either procedure will give you good results. In the end, you still have to do the work. Good luck!

    My choice is the sleeve!
