Fitbit adjustment at end of day issue.

Ok, here is my issue. You go to bed at 10PM thinking you are even on calories and wake up to find you actually went negative because MFP (via Fitbit) expected you to keep walking between 10 and midnight. This is not a reasonable assumption and very frustrating. I understand that the adjustment works based on a 24 hour assumption, but, come on, most people are not going to walk right up until midnight, right? Can this aspect of the model be fixed?

This is why I changed my activity level from lightly active to sedentary, I was losing a couple hundred calories every night. I turn into sloth mode after 5pm.

Nope, the MFP estimated daily calorie burn is figured at a constant rate.

That would be a nice addition to premium - input normal sleep/wake times and let MFP do the math better for rest of the day.
    Wouldn't be hard at all.

But - if you always go to bed about the same time - it'll always be the same, so leave that much in the green the day before.

I generally leave a 100 calorie buffer just in case. I'm pretty new to eating back exercise calories, but last night I found I was safe with that buffer. I wasn't sure being set to active how much it would deduct calories, but I generally settle down around 8:30-9:30 and I'm asleep by 10:30.

When I had that problem it turned out that the time zones on my profile settings were not set the same on each of the apps.

Recently I am finding that the mfp app is not adjusting my calorie count base on steps from my Zip fitbit. If there a setting somewhere that I need to check?

MFP does not adjust your calorie count based on your steps from Fitbit.

MFP adds a Fitbit calorie adjustment based on what Fitbit reports as total daily burn at that point in time.
A lose connection to steps, but not exactly the same.

Suggest reading the FAQ in the stickies to see how the systems work.

And you'll need to examine why the math seems off - is it getting a correct figure from Fitbit lately, or is it truly the math that is off?
This can be discerned by looking at the stats that made your Fitbit Calorie adjustments - so you need to look at the details on that.

I think I'm a bit confused--so if you go to sleep at 10 pm with 0 calories left, you'll wake up saying you were under your calorie goal? And this is because MFP assumes you'll keep walking until exactly midnight?

Yes, MFP takes your selected activity level and assumes that your calorie burn will be constant for all 24 hours of the day. So, you need to leave a few calories "uneaten" at the end of the day to make up for the fact that you're going to be sleeping. The earlier you go to bed and the higher your MFP activity level, the more calories you need to leave. However, if you're consistent about when you go to bed, the number of calories to leave uneaten will also be fairly consistent.

I'm set at sedentary now, and go to bed at around 7pm (i read or watch tv), I lost 38 calories from last night to this morning, so not a big deal.

Does the amount of calories you have left at the end of the day determine how many you lose? I did have a stupid amount left, like 800 and something..

No, the eating goal amount left doesn't effect how much is lost after the final Fitbit figures come across.

The difference between BMR level burn from Fitbit for those 5 hrs and MFP's Sedentary BMR x 1.25 will always be the same.

    0.25 x BMR / 24 x hours you went non-moving before midnight.

Say 0.25 x 1600 / 24 x 5 = 83 calories of correction, or amount to leave in the green if you hit a goal at 7 pm.

Correct for your BMR of course.
