Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Thursday -- IMASTAR2 (Derrick)
Friday -- MYALLFORJC (Bill)
Today's Topic: Some of us are in a fairly stable place with our weight, some are trending down nicely and some are on the roller coaster. How do you manage the closet. Do you hang on to a larger siz "just in case" or do do you in a brazen statement of confidence purge a size when you vacate it on your way down. What do you do as you lose or have lost weight about the old sizes.

I used to be pretty quick to bag up old sizes in my zeal and keep facing forward. Eventually they would make it to the thrift store. Pulling out an old size was a declaration of failure and defeat for me. I always wished I kept a pair of those old 44's I used to squeeze into though. Now I am purely practical. I know there are some ebbs and flows in the journey to and staying at goal. I generally keep an old size around for a while. But it is a good feeling when you realize you have couple of old sizes in there that you know you can let go.0

I've gotten rid of everything that was too large as a means to fully commit to keeping the weight off. It can be motivating to re-focus on your weight when your clothes start getting too tight!1

I burned my bridges after crossing them.
Lately I had to build a bridge . . .2 -
I didn't think much about clothes when I was loosing, but I probably should have.
One day a close coworker congratulated me on my weight loose and told me it was time to buy some new clothes.
I have to admit my shirts and pants were baggy and looking pretty bad. I went out and bought a few cheap pairs of jeans and casual shirts, as I knew I still had a lot more to loose. And I eventually bought another set of clothes before I met goal. Thankfully, my work environment is fairly casual.
I finally did the closet clean out after making lifetime (almost 5 years ago). That was the capstone event for me. Sorting through all those old clothes was a sobering moment. Everything went but the socks and ties. I even had shoes that were too big, LOL.0 -
I was on a roller coaster of weight gain/weight loss for 40 years before finally learning how to maintain this time. I always kept my clothes - too big and too small - unless they were hopelessly out of style or too worn out.
I had a lot of fun closet shopping for my formerly too small clothes when I got back to goal this time. But it took a couple of years of maintaining until I became confident enough to get rid of the too big clothes.
One of the best things for me about maintaining is that I know that I can pull any item of clothing that I have and it will fit. I only buy new ones when the old ones are no longer wearable for style or fatigue issues. A good thing for me as clothes shopping is an activity that I really don't like to do.0 -
I have kept one suit from when I was at my heaviest. I look at it each time I switch out my seasonal clothes. Other than that, I have given things away as they become too large. I have broad shoulders, so tops fit for a long time with slight alterations at the waist. Same with skirts. Jeans and dress pants are the first to go. As others have said, it is a great incentive to not regain the weight. I'm up about 7 pounds from my lowest weight, and my pants are snug around the waist. I'm not re-buying a larger size!0

My best friend and I are close in size so we end up swapping clothes back and forth. There is a pair of jeans that has gone back and forth 3 times now between our respective weight changes.
If she doesn't want it, I donate. Unless it's an expensive suit jacket in which case it sticks around because I can always alter it later.0 -
I purged all my bigger sizes from my closet when I got back to goal. Big incentive to not let things get out of hand.
I also did a lot of closet shopping on the way back to goal!0 -
Nope I don't hang on to big clothes. Well I did keep one pair of pants for doing house painting but honestly don't know where they are. I may have lagged a bit on the way down in the beginning . Honestly don't remember but not looking back.
My son-in-law chided me for buying a wonderful supple black leather jacket in Spain when we were traveling together because it "fit like a glove" perfectly. I said "so??". Still fits great 5 or 6 years later0 -
I kept my favorite jeans and t-shirt.
The rest I've mostly gotten rid of. I usually keep the latest 'too loose' or 'sloppy' jeans to bum around in the house. And some of my clothes aren't as fitted as others so there's some room for 'growth'. With my gain last fall, some of my clothes no longer fit, and I've gone back into those loose jeans, but I'm not buying more big clothes, so if I want a wardrobe, I need to get back down, and I plan to. I got good at 'maintaining' but now I need to lose!
And I'd add, I'm so glad I didn't save big clothes. Who knows how much I would have gained before I woke up out of my fog and got control again.0 -
I am in the camp with Charlie on this. I burned the bridges. I did keep a belt just as a measure of the waist size.0

I got rid of all my bigger clothes after my first big loss. I have since had to buy new clothes as I grew out of the smaller ones. I probably wear mine until I have to get rid of them and only buy a couple of pcs to supplement the wardrobe as I shrink.
On a positive note, I am only now about 40# from getting into the storage closet to start back into all the clothes I grew out of.0 -
I exclusively wear leggings.2

In all seriousness, I have been giving away the bigger sizes as fast as I can. I am NOT going back.0

Short story: donated them to thrift stores. Longer story: Been amazed at working my way back down my wardrobe into clothes I'd already hung onto that fit again, then found I had to drop down even from those. I'm slowly but surely acquiring a whole new wardrobe and I really don't ever want my old clothes back.0
