Hi fellow Kiwis

Let's share some great tracks or walkways. Especially those hidden gems that help keep you motivated to move.

If you're seeking some good walks in your area please post and maybe someone can recommend some.

I'm in Lower Hutt but we try to get out and about across Wellington. There's a new track on the eastern hills of Lower Hutt called the Te Whiti riser, well worth doing and not too steep. Takes about 2-3 hours to do there and back or you could do a loop if by walking part of it on the street.

There's also the Paekakariki track above Centennial highway I'd like to try soon when I'm feeling brave enough as it's a steep drop.

My mid-term goal is to complete a one day or overnight tramp one day. The Tongario crossing is one I'd love to achieve. I climbed Mt Taranaki when I was 13 and have never been that fit again.

Cheers
Tom

I used to live in Lower Hutt, I love hiking in the area! Have you ever done the rail trail up to the tunnel (in the hills behind upper hutt) that's great for an easy hike/cycle. So is the Eastbourne lighthouse. When the weather gets better you should go have a picnic at butterfly Creek (also Eastbourne), there is a swimming hole, and dogs are allowed so it's a great 1-2 he family walk.

Tongariro is definitely achievable! Just make sure you do it when the weather is decent. It's super pretty, only issue I had was with the metal grid under the track, it really jarred my knees so if I did it again I would take a knee brace.

And for something more rugged or overnight trips, you totally can't beat the Tararuas.

Hey emmykayyy thanks for replying. Yes I've biked the Rimutaka rail trail, and I've biked out to Eastbourne lighthouse on its open day and got to walk around inside and onto the deck.

Haven't been to butterfly creek yet, so we'll have to check that out.

The Tararuas are looking beautiful with their tops covered in snow I would think makes them a bit treacherous. Not up to tramping yet but one day hope to be.

What walks would you recommend where you are now?

I'm in Auckland now, so there's less accessible walks :( there's lots of interesting day walks in the Waitakeres, otherwise your best bet is to drive to coromandel/ruapehu for the weekend.

Hmm I think I was actually thinking of the Uraweras, not Tararuas. All I remember was a lot of mud. And tree roots. One of my more recent hikes was on Mt taranaki, loads of good day/multiday walks there, you could go there if you're amping up for tongariro

    Hi Tom,
I'm in Lower Hutt too, so I'm interested to see where you recommend to go walking. I've mostly wandered around places with the kids - Otari Wilton Bush, Percys Reserve, and in the Wainuiomata Rec area, and even the botanic gardens. Not sure I'd be keen on that Paekakariki track! I have slightly limited movement in one leg after an injury last year and steep inclines are still tricky but I love hiking/walking so I'm working on it.

I'm looking to find some more places to explore too, especially ones that are okay to take dogs on a lead as we have now got an extra set of legs to exercise. I think the butterfly creek one will be on my list for very soon.

I've got friends who have walked into the Orongorongas for an overnight stay with young kids (around age 5) so sounds a reasonably achievable one that I might look into at some stage.

    Hi Jo

Yes, all cool places, I like the Otari Wilton's bush as there's so many birds flying over from Zealandia.

We've got small dogs that can't walk very fast but we like finding dog friendly places for them too. Orongoronga's would be cool, but a bit of a mission to organise.

Have you done the Te Whiti riser yet? I want to do a loop. We biked around the Waikanae river a couple weekends ago, it was a great trip. Would be great walk too, I think it would take a few hours to do the whole thin. You can do a loop so you don't have retrace your steps and there's nice swimming holes along the way if you're inclined.

My partner isn't good at walking but biking is pain free so we're probably going to be doing more of that in the summer but keep those suggestions coming in.
